Renaissance – Prologue Capitol Records 1978 LP Acetate

Renaissance – Prologue Capitol Records 1978 LP Acetate

Offered for sale is a genuine stereo Capitol Records acetate for a 1978 reissue of the 1972 album Prologue by Renaissance.

It should be noted that there are many fake acetates for sale on eBay; this one was obtained from someone who received it directly from a Capitol record company employee and is guaranteed to be genuine.

About this copy: The disc is in VG++ condition, with just a few slight scuffs from having been removed from a paper sleeve at some point.  It doesn’t look as if it’s been played more than once or twice..  The surfaces are bright and have no significant marks.  The catalog number SMAS-11116, the date 8-23-78 and the timing are typed in on each side.  This disk is in exceptional condition, especially for an acetate, as they are often found in poor condition.  This one is gorgeous.

This disk was issued without a finished cover, as it was intended for in-house use only.  The cover is a plain white cover with the name of the artist and the title of the album handwritten on it.  There is a small amount of residue on the cover where a price tag has been removed.

If you’re a fan of Renaissance and you’re looking for something extraordinary, this is a great chance to add something unusual to your collection.  It’s likely the only Renaissance album acetate that you’re ever going to see for sale.

Background: After two relatively unsuccessful albums on Island as an offshoot of the Yardbirds, Renaissance underwent a dramatic change, adding singer Annie Haslam, who had a multi-octave range and operatic training.  This version of the band became quite successful during the latter part of the 1970s.  Their first album featuring the new lineup was Prologue, released in 1972.

After the success of Novella in 1977, Capitol reissued the album in 1978.  The disk offered for sale here is a prerelease acetate of the album, cut on a lathe for in-house use.

Acetates are laquer-covered metal disks that must be cut individually using a lathe; they are the first part of the record manufacturing process.  Ordinarily, acetates cut for production use are plated with metal, and stampers are made from them.  Occasionally, acetates are cut for evaluation purposes.  While they may be played like an ordinary record, their soft surfaces do not hold up well to repeated play.

Julie London – Collection of 67 Still Sealed U.S. Albums

julie london album collection

Offered for sale is a unique collection of sixty seven (67) still sealed American LP releases by pop singer Julie London, issued between 1955 and 1969.  All 67 LPs in the collection are still sealed (60 in shrink wrap, and 7 without shrink but with the record still sealed in a plastic inner sleeve.)  There are 37 different titles in the collection, including two compilations.

Most of the titles include both the mono and stereo releases for that particular title.  One of the compilations, Julie’s Golden Greats, includes two different covers, with each in both mono and stereo.

While some of Julie’s albums are more common than others, sealed copies of many of her titles are quite difficult to find today.

This collection isn’t complete, but all but one of her albums is represented here (missing title: Send for Me)  Nevertheless, it’s a very rare opportunity to obtain a nearly complete collection of sealed albums by this popular and photogenic artist.

The photos shown are composites; we have larger photos available, including front and back cover photos of each record and for the seven titles with sealed plastic inner sleeves, photos of the records themselves.  There are more than 100 photos in all; if you would like to see them, please contact us and we will send you a download link.

Tchaikovsky – Capriccio Italien – Kondrashin Classic Records 180 gram LP

Tchaikovsky - Capriccio Italien - Kondrashin Classic Records 180 gram LP

Offered for sale is a copy of the 180 gram, Classic Records reissue of Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien, performed by Kiril Kondrashin and the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra, accompanied by Artur Rubinstein on piano. This was originally issued in 1960 by RCA Records as LSC-2323.

About this copy: This copy of Capriccio Italien was released in a limited edition pressed on a 180 gram disc for optimum sound quality. The LP comes in a printed cover that duplicates the cover used on the original RCA release, and the label features the “shaded dog” RCA label art that was used on the original pressing.

The record and cover are in M- condition.  This is a beautiful copy of one of the more sought-after titles in the Classic Records Living Stereo series.

Background: Classic Records earned a solid reputation by reissuing long-out-of-print and highly sought out classical titles originally released by RCA in the late 1950s and early 1960s. These pressings offered great dynamics and wide, impressive soundstages. Unfortunately, they also sold in limited numbers when new and finding mint used copies has become quite difficult.

Classic Records began reissuing many of these titles in the mid 1990s, first as 180 gram 33 1/3 LPs, and later as limited edition pressings cut at 45 RPM on multiple, single-sided discs for optimum sound quality. Some of these titles were pressed multiple times at different weights and types of vinyl. Later pressings note Quiex SV, Quiex SV-P, Clarity Vinyl or 200 Gram vinyl on the jackets. Earlier, 180 gram pressings omit this.

Blackfield (Steven Wilson) – Blackfield II sealed original 2007 LP

Blackfield - Blackfield II sealed original 2007 LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. pressing of the original 2007 album by Blackfield, Blackfield II, featuring Porcupine Tree founder Steven Wilson.

About this copy: The copy offered for sale is a 2007 U.S. pressing on the Gates of Dawn label.

As the album is sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The album is still sealed in its loose perforated wrap, with no rips, tears, dents or holes.

A great copy of a terrific album.

Background: Porcupine Tree founder/singer/writer Steven Wilson is a busy guy – besides his work in PT, he’s found time over the years to record ambient music as Bass Communion, Krautrock-esque material with IEM, pop work as No Man, some solo stuff, and several albums worth of collaboration with Israeli singer Aviv Geffen as Blackfield.  The Blackfield releases are melodic, but a little less heavy and progressive than the Porcupine Tree material.

AllMusic.com gave Blackfield II four and a half stars, saying:

The sophomore release for this melodic duo (actually a five-piece band, but the leads are Steven Wilson and Aviv Geffen) based to some degree on the progressive bent of Porcupine Tree covers much of the same ground as their debut. The sound is still firmly in the realm of progressive rock, with hints of Radiohead and Oasis. Unlike Blackfield’s previous album which was recorded off and on over a two-year span, this one was recorded in one short stretch, and shows somewhat more consistency in tone as a result. …The short nature of Blackfield II (coming in around 42 minutes) will almost certainly have some of the fans wishing for more.

Fortunes – It’s the Real Thing sealed 1969 promo-only Coca-Cola LP

Fortunes - It's the Real Thing sealed 1969 promo-only Coca-Cola LP

Offered for sale is a rare, still sealed promotional-only LP by the Fortunes, called It’s the Real Thing, issued in 1969 to promote the Coca-Cola company.

About this copy: The record is still sealed, and is unplayed and believed to be perfectly mint.  The wrap has no rips, holes or tears.  There is just a bit of wear at the two corners on the spine.

This is quite a hard record to find in any condition, and it’s the only sealed copy we’ve ever seen.

Background: The Fortunes aren’t all that well remembered today, but during their recording career, which ran from 1965 to 1971, they released six songs that made the pop charts in the U.S., including You’ve Got Your Troubles in 1965 and Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again in 1971.  Their albums are fairly scarce (especially stereo copies of their first album), but none are as rare as this LP, entitled It’s the Real Thing.

This LP was released in 1969 and issued to promote the Coca-Cola company and was not commercially released.  We’ve read (can’t remember where) that the album was issued at a stockholder’s meeting, rather than sent out as some sort of general promotional item, but we cannot confirm that.  We do know, however, that some forty-odd years later, it’s a really tough album to find.

Track listing:

Side one:

  1. It’s the Real Thing
  2. It’s the Real Thing – Overture
  3. Books and Films
  4. Red Clay County Line
  5. Same Old Feeling
  6. Someone is Standing Outside

Side two:

  1. Everything in the Garden
  2. Lifetime of Love
  3. Feelings
  4. This Town Should Start Believing
  5. Sad Sad Sad
  6. Today I killed a Man

Byrds – The Byrds rare promo-only white label MONO LP

Byrds - self-titled mono white label promo 1973 reunion LP

Offered for sale is a mono white label promotional copy of the Byrd’s self-titled 1973 reunion LP.

About this copy: The copy offered for sale is a white label promotional copy intended for radio station use, but it’s a very rare one – it was pressed in mono.

The record is in beautiful M- condition, with just a couple of very faint sleeve abrasions.  It’s nearly perfect.  The cover is VG, with a couple of bent corners and a bit of wear along the edges.  Two stickers are included; one with recommended track listings and one indicating that the record is a monaural promotional copy.

A very clean copy of one of the rarest Byrds records.

Background: The Byrds had a lot of success in the mid-to-late 1960s, but the original band fell apart after just three albums.  Roger McGuinn carried the band on through 1972 when they more or less dissolved.  The following year, the original band of McGuinn, Chris Hillman, David Crosby, Gene Clark, and Michael Clarke reunited for what turned out to be a single-album reunion.

While the resulting LP disappointed critics and had no hit singles, the album did reach #20 on the American Billboard albums chart.

Although most record labels in the United States stopped selling records in both mono and stereo in early 1968, Atlantic Records and associated labels often pressed radio station copies in both mono and stereo through 1973, with the mono copies being intended for AM stations, which broadcast in mono.

Due to the decreasing numbers of AM stations which played album rock at the time, the labels pressed far fewer copies of the mono promo copies than the stereo ones.  By some estimates, as few as 50 copies of any title may have been pressed in mono.  The record is not labeled as mono, but the stereo designation is missing.

Bob Dylan – Another Side of Bob Dylan sealed mono 1964 LP

Bob Dylan - Another Side of Bob Dylan sealed mono 1964 LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed mono pressing of Another Side of Bob Dylan by Bob Dylan.

About this copy: This copy is an original mono pressing and is still sealed in its original plastic inner sleeve.  The record has presumably never been opened or played.

The cover is in Very Good Plus condition, with traces of ring wear at the top and bottom of the front.

While all of Bob Dylan’s mono albums have been recently reissued, the reissues were made from master tapes that are nearly fifty years old. If you want to hear the record as it sounded on the day of release in 1964, you will have a hard time finding a better copy than this one.

Background: Bob Dylan’s fourth album, the 1964 LP Another Side of Bob Dylan, contains some of his best known songs:  All I Really Want to Do, It Ain’t Me, Babe, Chimes of Freedom, and My Back Pages among them.  While failing to chart as highly as his previous two albums, it did sell well at the time of release.  As was common in the 1960s, this LP was released in both mono and stereo, with mono pressings being phased out in early 1968.

A beautiful copy of a record that is very difficult to find in this condition.

Tim Buckley – Greetings from LA sealed white label promo 1972 LP

Tim Buckley - Greetings from LA sealed white label promo 1972 LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed white label promotional copy of Greetings from L.A. by Tim Buckley, complete with a promo-only biographical insert.

About this copy: This copy of Greetings from L.A. is a 1972 U.S. pressing on the Warner Brothers label.

The disc should be a white label promotional copy of the record, as there is a flyer attached to the back cover that was only distributed with promotional copies.

The record is, of course, presumably new and unplayed, and the cover is the original pressing, which included the perforated front cover which allowed the photo to be removed for use as a postcard.

There is a tear in the shrinkwrap near the top of the front of the cover; it should be visible in the photos.  All in all, a beautiful, sealed promotional copy of an iconic album by a very influential performer.

Background: After a few albums of largely experimental material, Tim Buckley returned to more grounded and accessible music with his 1972 release, Greetings from LA.  Featuring the song, Sweet Surrender, the album generated a fair amount of airplay and got good reviews, but didn’t sell particularly well.

Allmusic.com gave Greetings from L.A. a 4 star review:

Stepping back from the swooping avant-garde touches of Starsailor for a fairly greasy, funky, honky tonk set of songs, the opening lines of Greetings from L.A. set the tone: “I went down to the meat rack tavern/And I found myself a big ol’ healthy girl.” Sassy backing vocalists, honking sax, and more add to the atmosphere, while Tim Buckley himself blends his vocal acrobatics with touches not unfamiliar to fans of Mick Jagger or Jim Morrison. … While no doubt there were commercial pressures at play, given Buckley’s constant change from album to album it seems like he simply found something else to try, which he did with gusto.
