Blackfield (Steven Wilson) – Blackfield II sealed original 2007 LP

Blackfield - Blackfield II sealed original 2007 LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. pressing of the original 2007 album by Blackfield, Blackfield II, featuring Porcupine Tree founder Steven Wilson.

About this copy: The copy offered for sale is a 2007 U.S. pressing on the Gates of Dawn label.

As the album is sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The album is still sealed in its loose perforated wrap, with no rips, tears, dents or holes.

A great copy of a terrific album.

Background: Porcupine Tree founder/singer/writer Steven Wilson is a busy guy – besides his work in PT, he’s found time over the years to record ambient music as Bass Communion, Krautrock-esque material with IEM, pop work as No Man, some solo stuff, and several albums worth of collaboration with Israeli singer Aviv Geffen as Blackfield.  The Blackfield releases are melodic, but a little less heavy and progressive than the Porcupine Tree material.

AllMusic.com gave Blackfield II four and a half stars, saying:

The sophomore release for this melodic duo (actually a five-piece band, but the leads are Steven Wilson and Aviv Geffen) based to some degree on the progressive bent of Porcupine Tree covers much of the same ground as their debut. The sound is still firmly in the realm of progressive rock, with hints of Radiohead and Oasis. Unlike Blackfield’s previous album which was recorded off and on over a two-year span, this one was recorded in one short stretch, and shows somewhat more consistency in tone as a result. …The short nature of Blackfield II (coming in around 42 minutes) will almost certainly have some of the fans wishing for more.

Fortunes – It’s the Real Thing sealed 1969 promo-only Coca-Cola LP

Fortunes - It's the Real Thing sealed 1969 promo-only Coca-Cola LP

Offered for sale is a rare, still sealed promotional-only LP by the Fortunes, called It’s the Real Thing, issued in 1969 to promote the Coca-Cola company.

About this copy: The record is still sealed, and is unplayed and believed to be perfectly mint.  The wrap has no rips, holes or tears.  There is just a bit of wear at the two corners on the spine.

This is quite a hard record to find in any condition, and it’s the only sealed copy we’ve ever seen.

Background: The Fortunes aren’t all that well remembered today, but during their recording career, which ran from 1965 to 1971, they released six songs that made the pop charts in the U.S., including You’ve Got Your Troubles in 1965 and Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again in 1971.  Their albums are fairly scarce (especially stereo copies of their first album), but none are as rare as this LP, entitled It’s the Real Thing.

This LP was released in 1969 and issued to promote the Coca-Cola company and was not commercially released.  We’ve read (can’t remember where) that the album was issued at a stockholder’s meeting, rather than sent out as some sort of general promotional item, but we cannot confirm that.  We do know, however, that some forty-odd years later, it’s a really tough album to find.

Track listing:

Side one:

  1. It’s the Real Thing
  2. It’s the Real Thing – Overture
  3. Books and Films
  4. Red Clay County Line
  5. Same Old Feeling
  6. Someone is Standing Outside

Side two:

  1. Everything in the Garden
  2. Lifetime of Love
  3. Feelings
  4. This Town Should Start Believing
  5. Sad Sad Sad
  6. Today I killed a Man

Previn/LSO – 1812 Overture sealed Mobile Fidelity LP

Previn/LSO - 1812 Overture sealed Mobile Fidelity LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed copy of the Mobile Fidelity half speed mastered pressing of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.  The title is actually, A Tchaikovsky Spectacular, as it features three works:  the 1812 Overture, Romeo and Juliet, and March Slave.

About this copy: This copy is still sealed and has never been opened or played.  This copy is a cutout; it has a small saw mark on the cover and the LP was packaged at the factory without the heavy cardboard stiffener that usually accompanied Mobile Fidelity LPs.  The cover is sealed with loose-fitting shrinkwrap.

A nice sealed copy of one of Mobile Fidelity’s harder to find titles.

Background: The 1812 Overture is a workhorse for orchestras around the world; it lets them stretch out and even use real cannons when they are so inclined.  There are numerous audiophile recordings of the work that are highly regarded – Mercury’s late 1950s pressing, which was the first to use real cannons, another by Reiner and the Chicago Symphony from around 1960, and the early digital recording by Telarc that has been known to throw tonearm needles right out of the grooves when the cannons fire.

This recording, from 1973, features the London Symphony Orchestra, which was then conducted by Andre Previn in an all-Tchaikovsky album.  The 1812 piece includes the now-mandatory cannons in the finale.

Every title ever issued by Mobile Fidelity is collectible in its own right; their pressings from 1978 through 1989 were pressed in Japan by JVC on their proprietary Super Vinyl, an exceptionally resilient, dead-quiet vinyl compound. These records were mastered at half speed; both the tape and the cutting lathe were run at half the normal speed, allowing the cutting head to cut a more accurate groove in the acetate.  The finished product featured dead-quiet vinyl, with improved dynamics, better imaging, and tighter bass.  By their very nature, all of Mobile Fidelity’s titles were limited-edition pressings, and several titles were limited to 5000 numbered copies.

Jimi Hendrix – Midnight Lightning sealed 1975 LP

Jimi Hendrix - Midnight Lightning sealed 1975 LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed copy of the 1975 LP Midnight Lightning by Jimi Hendrix.

About this copy:  This is an original sealed copy of Midnight Lightning, Reprise MS2228.  The shrink wrap is tight and intact, though a couple of corners are slighting pushed.  There is a saw mark in the cover on the upper right hand edge near the mouth of the cover.

A beautiful, still sealed copy of a Hendrix album that is unlikely to be reissued anytime soon, if ever.

Background: Jimi Hendrix may have only released three albums in his short lifetime, but he left behind hundreds of hours of studio recordings, some finished, some nearly finished, and some in a rather raw state.  The finished tracks were issued shortly after his death in the form of The Cry of Love, War Heroes, and Loose Ends, but the studios were uncertain about what to do with the partially completed tracks.

In 1975, producer Alan Douglas took on the task.  He found a group of promising cuts, removed all instruments from the recordings other than Jimi’s and had session musicians play along with the tapes.  This yielded two albums – Crash Landing, and Midnight Lightning.  The results weren’t much admired by either critics or hardcore fans of Hendrix, but the records sold well and were, for all of the controversy, actually pretty good albums.  Both are now out of print, and now that the Hendrix estate controls Jimi’s catalog, they are likely to stay out of print permanently

Bob Dylan – Another Side of Bob Dylan sealed mono 1964 LP

Bob Dylan - Another Side of Bob Dylan sealed mono 1964 LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed mono pressing of Another Side of Bob Dylan by Bob Dylan.

About this copy: This copy is an original mono pressing and is still sealed in its original plastic inner sleeve.  The record has presumably never been opened or played.

The cover is in Very Good Plus condition, with traces of ring wear at the top and bottom of the front.

While all of Bob Dylan’s mono albums have been recently reissued, the reissues were made from master tapes that are nearly fifty years old. If you want to hear the record as it sounded on the day of release in 1964, you will have a hard time finding a better copy than this one.

Background: Bob Dylan’s fourth album, the 1964 LP Another Side of Bob Dylan, contains some of his best known songs:  All I Really Want to Do, It Ain’t Me, Babe, Chimes of Freedom, and My Back Pages among them.  While failing to chart as highly as his previous two albums, it did sell well at the time of release.  As was common in the 1960s, this LP was released in both mono and stereo, with mono pressings being phased out in early 1968.

A beautiful copy of a record that is very difficult to find in this condition.

Tim Buckley – Greetings from LA sealed white label promo 1972 LP

Tim Buckley - Greetings from LA sealed white label promo 1972 LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed white label promotional copy of Greetings from L.A. by Tim Buckley, complete with a promo-only biographical insert.

About this copy: This copy of Greetings from L.A. is a 1972 U.S. pressing on the Warner Brothers label.

The disc should be a white label promotional copy of the record, as there is a flyer attached to the back cover that was only distributed with promotional copies.

The record is, of course, presumably new and unplayed, and the cover is the original pressing, which included the perforated front cover which allowed the photo to be removed for use as a postcard.

There is a tear in the shrinkwrap near the top of the front of the cover; it should be visible in the photos.  All in all, a beautiful, sealed promotional copy of an iconic album by a very influential performer.

Background: After a few albums of largely experimental material, Tim Buckley returned to more grounded and accessible music with his 1972 release, Greetings from LA.  Featuring the song, Sweet Surrender, the album generated a fair amount of airplay and got good reviews, but didn’t sell particularly well.

Allmusic.com gave Greetings from L.A. a 4 star review:

Stepping back from the swooping avant-garde touches of Starsailor for a fairly greasy, funky, honky tonk set of songs, the opening lines of Greetings from L.A. set the tone: “I went down to the meat rack tavern/And I found myself a big ol’ healthy girl.” Sassy backing vocalists, honking sax, and more add to the atmosphere, while Tim Buckley himself blends his vocal acrobatics with touches not unfamiliar to fans of Mick Jagger or Jim Morrison. … While no doubt there were commercial pressures at play, given Buckley’s constant change from album to album it seems like he simply found something else to try, which he did with gusto.

Bob Dylan – John Wesley Harding sealed mono U.S. LP

Bob Dylan - John Wesley Harding sealed mono 1968 LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed original mono pressing of John Wesley Harding by Bob Dylan.

About this copy: This copy is an original 1968 mono pressing and is still sealed in its original plastic inner sleeve. The record is presumably new and unplayed.

The cover does have some wear at the corners and some ring wear on the front, grading Very Good.

Mono copies of this album have been hard to find for years, and sealed ones rarely come up for sale.  While the mono Bob Dylan albums have been recently reissued, the reissues were made from tapes that are more than forty years old.  If you want to hear this album in mono the way it sounded the day it was first released, this pressing is for you.

Background: Bob Dylan’s 1968 LP John Wesley Harding was his first album since 1966’s Blonde on Blonde and it didn’t disappoint.  While it introduced the world to the track later made famous by Jimi Hendrix, All Along the Watchtower, it also had the distinction of being the last Bob Dylan album to be released in both mono and stereo in the United States.  As such, it was only available in mono for a few short months before being deleted.

Heart – Magazine 1978 U.S. picture disc LP – ultra low number 7/100,000

heart magazine u.s. picture disc LP

Offered for sale is a limited edition numbered U.S. picture disc pressing of Magazine by Heart.  This copy is #7 of 100,000 copies!

Note: While the cover indicates that this is 7/100,000, the record company reportedly pressed 130,000 copies of the album, and we’ve seen copies with numbers above 100,000.

About this copy: This copy of Magazine is a 1978 U.S. pressing on the Mushroom label of an album that was originally released in 1977.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The cover is VG+ with a couple of small corner bends and very slight edge and corner wear.

In the upper right hand corner of the back cover is a number indicating that this copy is 7/100,000.

There is a split in the clear plastic inner sleeve.

The picture disc is VG++ on side one with a couple of faint sleeve scuffs.  Side two is M-.  The disc has likely only been played once or twice.

A beautiful copy of a classic LP and one of the lowest numbered copies we’ve ever seen.

Background: Released in 1978, the picture disc edition of Heart’s Magazine was the first picture disc LP to get widespread national distribution.

The numbered series was supposed to be limited to 100,000 copies, but due to the popularity of the LP, the record company reportedly pressed 130,000 copies, along with an additional 30,000 copies in Canada, which were numbered separately.

Magazine was the second album by Heart.  The album was released in 1977 but was immediately withdrawn due to a lawsuit between the band and the record company, which had released the album in incomplete form without the band’s permission.

The album was reissued the following year with a different mix and a couple of rerecorded songs.  The album reached #17 on the U.S. charts.

Allmusic.com gave Magazine this review:

Problems with the Mushroom label delayed the release of Magazine, which eventually went platinum and peaked at number 17 on the album charts. Only the hard-rocking “Heartless” made it into the Top 40, and the album didn’t really live up to Heart’s last few efforts.

Meat Loaf – Bat Out of Hell 1978 U.S. promotional picture disc LP

Meat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell 1978 U.S. picture disc LP

Offered for sale is a  U.S. picture disc edition of Meat Loaf’s album Bat Out of Hell, released in 1978 only as a promotional item.

Note: This is the original U.S. promotional release with the black cover that does not say “Limited edition of 1000,”  and also not the more common commercial release with the burgundy cover with bats printed on it or the Canadian pressing that also had a black cover.

About this copy: This copy of Bat Out of Hell is a 1978 U.S. pressing on the Cleveland International label.

The cover is M- with trace corner wear.  The picture disc is M- and may be unplayed.  Clean disc!

There are several variations on this LP. this pressing has the sides marked as “Side I” and “Side II.”

A nice copy of a scarce, and great-looking picture disc.  This is the nicest cover we’ve ever seen on a copy that wasn’t sealed.

Background: Meat Loaf’s second album, Bat Out of Hell, created quite a sensation when it was released in 1977. To promote the album, Epic Records pressed a picture disc edition of the album which was issued only as a promotional item.

These promo-only discs soon began changing hands for large sums of money among collectors, partly because of the interesting artwork and partly because the picture disc LP was then a fairly new format, and largely limited to promotional releases.

The promotional issue of Bat Out of Hell came in a plain black cover with red print on the back indicating the album title and song titles.  A second printing had “Limited edition of 1000” printed on the back cover.

Shortly thereafter, Epic Records in Canada issued the picture disc as a limited edition commercial release. This pressing closely resembled the U.S. promotional issue, though it did mention that it was made in Canada on the back cover.

Still later, Epic Records in the U.S. opted to release the picture disc commercially, though the U.S. stock pressings have a burgundy cover with small bats printed on it.

The American promotional issues are fairly rare, and the black-cover Canadian issues are also fairly scarce, as the Canadian record market was fairly small at that time. The U.S. commercial issue with the “bats” cover are the most common variation of this picture disc.

Allmusic.com gave Bat Out of Hell a 4 1/2 star review:

There is no other album like Bat Out of Hell, unless you want to count the sequel. This is Grand Guignol pop — epic, gothic, operatic, and silly, and it’s appealing because of all of this. Jim Steinman was a composer without peer, simply because nobody else wanted to make mini-epics like this. …It may be easy to dismiss this as ridiculous, but there’s real style and craft here and its kitsch is intentional. It may elevate adolescent passion to operatic dimensions, and that’s certainly silly, but it’s hard not to marvel at the skill behind this grandly silly, irresistible album.

Stevie Wonder – Live at the Talk of the Town 1970 UK LP

Stevie Wonder - Live at the Talk of the Town 1970 UK LP

Offered for sale is an original UK pressing of Live at the Talk of the Town by Stevie Wonder.

This 1970 live album was not released in the United States.

About this copy: This copy of Live at the Talk of the Town is a 1970 UK pressing on the Tamla/Motown label.

The flipback cover is VG+ with slight general wear and a couple of lamination cracks.

The disc is VG++ with a couple of light inaudible marks on each side and a few spindle marks on the labels.  It’s a clean disc that plays well.

A nice copy of a scarce Stevie Wonder LP.

Background: Released in 1970, Live at the Talk of the Town was a live album by Stevie Wonder.

Released only in Europe, the album did not chart.

Allmusic.com gave Live at the Talk of the Town a 3 star review:

A strong record, this live album captures Stevie just before he turned 21 and assumed complete creative control at Motown. Wonder turns in solid performances of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” as well as his own hits “For Once In My Life” and “My Cherie Amour.” The treat of the album, though, is hearing Stevie introduce his brand new single, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours,” before launching into a blistering rendition of the now-classic song.
