Description
Offered for sale is a rare Japanese red vinyl 45 RPM pressing of Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance, by Alfred Newman and the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra, including the original obi.
The 1968 album was originally released in the U.S. in 1959 with a different cover, though the 45 RPM pressing is unique to Japan as the U.S. issue was released as a standard 33 1/3 RPM LP.
About this copy: This copy of Sabre Dance is an original 1968 Japanese pressing on the Capitol label, pressed on “Everclean” red vinyl.
The cover is VG++ with no wear, but a bit of foxing inside the gatefold cover. The obi is M-, with a slight fold on the “hojyuhyo,” or reorder tag, which is still attached.
The envelope-style inner sleeve is included and is M-. This LP was issued without an insert.
The red vinyl disc is M- and may be unplayed. It has one minor sleeve scuff. Beautiful disc!
A nice copy of a surprisingly good recording.
Background: We don’t know much about this title, except that it was released in early 1968 and consists of Alfred Newman and the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra conducting Sabre Dance:
- Gayne Suite
- Masquerade Suite
- Comedians Suite
This contains the same material as the LP released in the U.S. by Capitol in 1959 with a different cover, except…
…that this LP was mastered at 45 RPM, which is indicated on the cover, obi and label. Such pressings are not particularly unusual today, as many audiophile labels now cut LPs at 45 RPM, but such pressings were almost unknown in the 1960s.
We think it’s a pretty good recording, and is certainly a rare one. It’s the only copy we’ve ever seen.
