Eagles – Greatest Hits 1978 UK green vinyl LP

Eagles - Greatest Hits 1978 UK green vinyl LP

Offered for sale is a limited edition green vinyl UK pressing of The Eagles Greatest Hits by the Eagles.

About this copy: This copy of The Eagles Greatest Hits is a 1978 UK pressing on the Asylum label.

The cover is VG+, with slight edge and corner wear.  Unlike many copies of this LP, this one does not have a punch hole in the cover.

The green vinyl record is VG++ on side one with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, and VG+ on side two with a couple of sleeve scuffs through the first track.  It’s a clean disc that has had little play.

A nice copy of an iconic album.

Background:

Released in 1976, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 went on to become the biggest-selling album in history.

The album reached #1 on the U.S. charts and has sold 38 million copies in the U.S. alone.

Allmusic.com gave Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 a 5 star review:

On their first four albums, the Eagles were at pains to demonstrate that they were a group of at least near-equals, each getting a share of the songwriting credits and lead vocals. But this compilation drawn from those albums, comprising the group’s nine Top 40 hits plus “Desperado,” demonstrates that this evenhandedness did not extend to singles — as far as those go, the Eagles belong to Glenn Frey and Don Henley. The tunes are melodic, and the arrangements — full of strummed acoustic guitars over a rock rhythm section often playing a shuffle beat, topped by tenor-dominated harmonies — are immediately engaging….No wonder it was such a big hit out of the box, topping the charts and becoming the first album ever certified platinum. Still, there must be more to it, since the album wasn’t just a big hit, but one of the biggest ever, becoming one of the very few discs to cross the threshold of 20 million copies and competing for the title of best-selling album of all time. There may be no explaining that, really, except to note that this was the pervasive music of the first half of the 1970s, and somehow it never went away.

In the late 1970s, collectors were showing a lot of interest in colored vinyl, and record companies around the world produced a number of limited edition colored vinyl pressings of both older and then-new titles in an attempt to get collectors to buy albums they already owned at a somewhat higher price.

The Eagles Greatest Hits was one of those titles.  While it was pressed in the UK, it was widely available pretty much everywhere in the United States as an import and may have been made for export only.

Allmusic.com gave Greatest Hits Live a 4 star review:

Okay, here’s the problem: in 1975, Elektra released The Best of Carly Simon, which compiled her hits from 1971-1975. Simon then scored a couple more big hits for Elektra (“Nobody Does It Better,” “You Belong to Me”) before leaving the label in 1979, but not enough to justify another compilation. She had another hit on Warners (“Jesse”), where she spent the early ’80s, crapped out on Epic, for whom she made one album in 1985, and revived her career on Arista starting with the Top 40 hit “Coming Around Again” in 1986. That means her catalog contained one obsolete best-of, while her other hits were strewn across several labels. The solution? A live album, of course. Except that Simon had developed stage fright. Nevertheless, she was persuaded to do one show at her Martha’s Vineyard summer home, which was filmed for the HBO special and home video Carly in Concert: Coming Around Again and taped for this album. …The material was well performed, and though these of course were re-recordings, the album’s gold-selling commercial success confirmed that Simon’s fans were looking for a good career retrospective and willing to settle.

The album reached #1 on both the U.S. and UK album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Elton John’s Greatest Hits a 5 star review:

Rarely has a greatest-hits collection been as effective as Elton John’s first compilation of Greatest Hits. Released at the end of 1974, after Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Caribou had effectively established him as a superstar, Greatest Hits is exactly what it says it is — it features every one of his Top Ten singles (“Your Song,” “Rocket Man,” “Honky Cat,” “Crocodile Rock,” “Daniel,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” “Bennie and the Jets,” “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me”), plus the number 12 “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” and radio and concert favorite “Border Song.” Despite the exclusion of a couple of lesser hits from this era, most notably “Levon” and “Tiny Dancer,” Greatest Hits is a nearly flawless collection, offering a perfect introduction to Elton John and providing casual fans with almost all the hits they need.

Temptations – Greatest Hits 1966 UK stereo LP with alternate cover

Offered for sale is an original 1966 UK stereo pressing of The Temptations Greatest Hits by the Temptations, with a different cover from the U.S. release.

About this copy: This copy of The Temptations Greatest Hits is a 1966 UK stereo pressing on the Tamla/Motown label.

The flipback cover is  VG with a lamination crack and small tear at the mouth of the cover and a faintly written name on the back cover on the right hand edge.

The disc is VG+, with a couple of faint marks and light sleeve scuffs.  It’s a clean disc that plays well.

A nice copy of a terrific LP; the UK Motown albums sound much better than the U.S. versions.

Background: Released in 1966, The Temptations Greatest Hits was the first compilation album by the Temptations.

The album reached #5 on the U.S. album chart and #17 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave The Temptations Greatest Hits a 3 star review:

As the first Temptations hits package Motown released, Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 appeared a little over two years into the group’s career, but it remains an excellent hits collection. Not all of the 12 tracks were giant hits — “The Girl’s Alright with Me,” “Since I Lost My Baby,” “It’s Growing” and “I’ll Be in Trouble” never became as ubiquitous as “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” “My Girl,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” and “Get Ready,” all of which are included here — but the lesser-known tracks are terrific in their own right and help make the album a dynamic experience. Nevertheless, those minor hits and album tracks date Greatest Hits, illustrating that it was released during the group’s extraordinary run.

Simon & Garfunkel – Greatest Hits 1980s U.S. LP

Simon & Garfunkel - Greatest Hits 1980s U.S. LP

Offered for sale is a U.S. pressing of Simon & Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits by Simon & Garfunkel.

Four of the “hits” on this LP are actually previously unreleased live recordings.

About this copy: This copy of Simon & Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits is a 1981 U.S. pressing on the Columbia label of an album that was originally released in 1972.

The cover is M-.  The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a classic LP.

Background: Released in 1972, Simon & Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits was the first compilation by the group and included four previously unreleased live tracks.

The album reached #5 on the U.S. album chart and #2 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave Simon & Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits a 3 1/2 star review:

This album has had over three decades to make an impact, and it says something for its staying power that, in the face of more recent, more generously programmed, and better mastered compilations of the duo’s work, it remains one of the most popular parts of the Simon & Garfunkel catalog — which doesn’t mean it isn’t fraught with frustrations for anyone buying it. … Nine of the tracks on the 14-song LP did, indeed, comprise the duo’s biggest hits — including “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Mrs. Robinson,” and “The Sounds of Silence” — in their familiar studio versions; but interspersed between them were previously unheard live recordings of “For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her,” “The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy),” “Homeward Bound,” and “Kathy’s Song,” plus an alternate take of “America.” At that time, Simon & Garfunkel had never released a live album, and as it happened, at least four of those five were among the most personal songs in the duo’s repertory — songs that millions of fans responded to individually (as opposed to the mass appeal of the pair’s hit singles).

Amboy Dukes (Ted Nugent) – Survival of the Fittest/Marriage on the Rocks UK 2 LP set

Amboy Dukes- Survival of the Fittest/Marriage on the Rocks UK 2 LP

Offered for sale is a copy of the UK double album Survival of the Fittest/Marriage on the Rocks by Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes.

About this copy: This copy of Survival of the Fittest/Marriage on the Rocks is a 1977 UK pressing on the Polydor label of albums that were originally released in 1970 and 1971.

The cover is VG+ with light general wear, mostly at the edges.

The two discs are VG++ and close to M-, with one or two light hairlines on each side.  They’re clean discs that have had little play.

A nice copy of a scarce Ted Nugent LP.

Background:  Released in 1977, Survival of the Fittest/Marriage on the Rocks was a double album issued in the UK that paired two albums that had originally been released separately:

Marriage on the Rocks/Rock Bottom – This was the fourth album by the Amboy Dukes.  It reached #170 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Marriage on the Rocks/Rock Bottom a 3 star review:

Amboy Dukes’ Marriage on the Rocks/Rock Bottom is a very musical record, more experimental than their releases on Mainstream Records, not as soaked in the Pat Travers blues-rock which the follow-up, Survival of the Fittest embraced, and not as rocking as The Call of the Wild, which would be released about four years after this on Warner Brothers’ Discreet label. Interesting to note the mutation of the Nugent sound with every label change. This work on Polydor is certainly more in the Ten Years After bag (especially on Survival of the Fittest, Live), with keyboards up there in the mix almost equal to Ted Nugent’s guitar.

Survival of the Fittest Live – This was the fifth album by the Amboy Dukes.  It reached #129 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Survival of the Fittest Live this review:

After three albums on Mainstream Records and a Top 20 smash with “Journey to the Center of the Mind,” Ted Nugent brought his new aggregation to Polydor(the late Lillian Roxon claimed there were 35 personnel changes prior to their first and only hit). This second album on that label (and before they would jump to Warner and eventually Epic), was recorded live at The Eastowne Theater in Detroit, MI, July 31 and August 1, 1970. A prime candidate for re-release with bonus tracks, the full hit is not here; the single disc contains six tracks, including the 21-minute-and-20-second epic “Prodigal Man,” written by Nugent and sung by keyboardist Andy Solomon. …. Steve Farmer is long gone from here, and only Andy Solomon and Ted Nugent remain from the band who had the hit two years before this concert was recorded. This is really Ted Nugent moving away from the group concept and gearing up for his heavy metal fame in the ’70s and ’80s. It is mildly interesting.

Bob Dylan – Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits Japan LP with obi

About this copy: This copy of Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits is a 1976 pressing on the CBS/Sony label of an album that was originally released in 1967.

The cover is M- with trace corner wear.  The obi is M-.  The lyric booklet is M-.  The poster is M- with no rips, tears, or holes.

The disc is M- with one or two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a classic LP.

Background: Bob Dylan took some time off after releasing Blonde on Blonde in 1966, largely because he was recovering from a motorcycle accident. Columbia records took advantage of his time off by releasing his first compilation LP, Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits.

Allmusic.com gave Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits a 5 star review:

Arriving in 1967, Greatest Hits does an excellent job of summarizing Dylan’s best-known songs from his first seven albums. At just ten songs, it’s a little brief, and the song selection may be a little predictable, but that’s actually not a bad thing, since this provides a nice sampler for the curious and casual listener, as it boasts standards from “Blowin’ in the Wind” to “Like a Rolling Stone.”
