Allmusic.com gave The Temptations Greatest Hits a 3 star review:
As the first Temptations hits package Motown released, Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 appeared a little over two years into the group’s career, but it remains an excellent hits collection. Not all of the 12 tracks were giant hits — “The Girl’s Alright with Me,” “Since I Lost My Baby,” “It’s Growing” and “I’ll Be in Trouble” never became as ubiquitous as “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” “My Girl,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” and “Get Ready,” all of which are included here — but the lesser-known tracks are terrific in their own right and help make the album a dynamic experience. Nevertheless, those minor hits and album tracks date Greatest Hits, illustrating that it was released during the group’s extraordinary run.
