Dire Straits – Brothers in Arms sealed U.S. LP

dire straits- brothers in arms u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. copy of Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits.

About this copy: This copy of Brothers in Arms is an original U.S. pressing on the Warner Brothers label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact except for a small tear on the front near the bottom edge.  There is a hype sticker attached to the shrink wrap that mentions the songs, “Walk of Life” and “Money for Nothing.”

There is a cutout hole in the upper right hand corner.

A nice copy of a scarce Dire Straits LP.

Background: Released in 1985, Brothers in Arms was the fifth album by Dire Straits.

The album reached #1 on the charts in at least ten countries, including the U.S. and the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Brothers in Arms a 4 star review:

Brothers in Arms brought the atmospheric, jazz-rock inclinations of Love Over Gold into a pop setting, resulting in a surprise international best-seller. …. Dire Straits had never been so concise or pop-oriented, and it wore well on them. Though they couldn’t maintain that consistency through the rest of the album — only the jazzy “Your Latest Trick” and the flinty “Ride Across the River” make an impact — Brothers in Arms remains one of their most focused and accomplished albums, and in its succinct pop sense, it’s distinctive within their catalog.

Miles Davis – Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall sealed U.S. stereo “6 eye” LP

miles davis - at carnegie hall u.s. LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed original U.S. stereo pressing of Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall by Miles Davis.

While the shrink wrap has been removed from the cover, the record is still sealed in the plastic inner sleeve.

About this copy: This copy of Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall is an original 1962 U.S. stereo pressing on the Columbia “6 eye” label that was discontinued shortly after the album’s release.

This label is unusual in that it does not have “CBS” at the top of the label, as nearly all first pressings of the album did.

The cover is VG+, with slight corner and edge wear, and a bit of ring wear on the front near the bottom edge.

The disc is sealed in the plastic inner sleeve and is presumably new and unplayed.

Matrix numbers are:

Side one:  XSM-56273-1AB
Side two: XSM-56274-1G

The album is rechanneled stereo, rather than true stereo, though Columbia’s rechanneled stereo process was quite good compared to that of RCA or Capitol.

A beautiful copy of a terrific LP that’s hard to find on the original label.

Background: Released in 1962, Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall was Davis’ first live album for Columbia.  While the label adopted stereo fairly early, this recording was originally issued only in mono and rechanneled stereo.

Allmusic.com gave Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall a 4 star review:

In 1998, Columbia/Legacy reissued Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall as a double-disc set that contained all of the music performed at the concert from May 19, 1961. Davis is captured with his transitional small combo featuring Hank Mobley, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb, as well as with the Gil Evans Orchestra. It was one of only two concerts Davis and Evans performed together, and that alone makes the album necessary for collectors, but the music itself is terrific.

Linda Ronstadt – Stone Poneys, Vol. 3 sealed 1968 promo LP

linda ronstadt - stoney poneys vol. III u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed promotional copy of the scarce third album by the Stone Poneys – the awkwardly-titled Linda Ronstadt, Stone Poneys and Friends, Volume 3.

About this copy: This copy of Linda Ronstadt, Stone Poneys and Friends, Volume 3 is an original 1968 U.S. pressing and is a promotional copy, with clean hole punched through the top right corner of the cover and inner sleeve.

This is a punched promotional hole, rather than a drilled hole indicating a cutout.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact except for a 2″ break in the center of the top seam of the cover.  There is a small cover split there.  We’ve secured the wrap with tape to prevent further splitting.

A nice copy of a scarce Linda Ronstadt LP and the only sealed copy we’ve ever seen.

Background: Linda Ronstadt, Stone Poneys and Friends, Volume 3 was the third and final album by the Stone Poneys, and Linda Ronstadt would release her first solo album the following year.  It’s also the hardest of the three albums to find, as it was only in print for a short time.

Allmusic.com gave Linda Ronstadt, Stone Poneys and Friends, Volume 3 a 3 star review:

The Stone Poneys broke up during the recording of their final album, leaving Ronstadt to finish the work with various sessionmen (hence the billing “Stone Poneys & Friends”). It’s a solid effort, though, of decent if muted Californian folk-rock, with a laid-back (but not offensively so), carefully produced feel…. The inclusion of three Tim Buckley songs serves as evidence that Ronstadt was hipper than some of her detractors have made her out to be.

Rolling Stones – The Rolling Stones Now! sealed MONO 1965 U.S. LP

rolling stones - now! sealed u.s. mono lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed MONO copy of The Rolling Stones Now!, the third U.S. album by the Rolling Stones, released in 1965.

About this copy:  This copy of The Rolling Stones Now!  is a still sealed mono copy of the album, released in 1965.

While the shrink wrap has been removed from the cover, the record is still sealed in the original plastic sleeve, and is presumably new and unplayed.

The cover does have the withdrawn portion of the liner notes on it (“…see that blind man, knock him on his head…”)  The cover is VG+, with slight edge wear and trace ring wear but no splits, tears, holes, or writing.   It’s about as nice as these black covers ever get.

The record is an American-pressed disc with the “boxed” London logo.

It’s quite difficult to find clean mono Rolling Stones albums these days, as  most of them were played to death when new.  Sealed copies are considerably harder to come by.

A beautiful copy of a terrific album and the nicest sealed one we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: The early American Rolling Stones albums were largely recorded in mono, and the “stereo” pressings of the albums contained most songs in fake or rechanneled, stereo, which had added reverb and other electronic gimmickry to make the mono recording sound more stereo-like.

The mono versions of those albums, including The Rolling Stones Now! are generally preferred by collectors.  London Records discontinued mono LPs in 1968, making mono copies of this album a relative rarity, as they were only in print for about three years.   All later pressings of The Rolling Stones Now! were issued in rechanneled stereo.

While they weren’t really cranking out hits yet when The Rolling Stones Now! was released in early 1965, the Rolling Stones were doing a great job of covering classic R&B songs.  They were also selling some records, despite the relative lack of hits.

The Rolling Stones Now! reached #5 on the album charts and was certified Gold by the RIAA, even though the biggest hit on the album was “Heart of Stone,” which reached #19 on the Billboard singles charts.

Early pressings of the album had this in the liner notes, which was later removed:

This is THE STONES new disc within. Cast deep in your pockets for the loot to buy this disc of groovies and fancy words. If you don’t have the bread, see that blind man knock him on the head, steal his wallet and low and behold you have the loot, if you put in the boot, good, another one sold!

Allmusic.com gave The Rolling Stones Now! a rare 5 star review:

Although their third American album was patched together (in the usual British Invasion tradition) from a variety of sources, it’s their best early R&B-oriented effort. Most of the Stones’ early albums suffer from three or four very weak cuts; Now! is almost uniformly strong start-to-finish, the emphasis on some of their blackest material.

Michael Jackson – 14 Greatest Hits sealed U.S. picture disc LP with glove and poster

michael jackson - 14 greatest hits picture disc LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. picture disc edition of 14 Greatest Hits by Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5.

This picture disc includes both a poster and a single white glove.   The glove was not included in all copies of the album.

About this copy: This copy of 14 Greatest Hits is an original 1984 U.S. pressing on the Motown label.

As the album is sealed, the record is presumably unplayed.

The cover has a saw mark in the lower left-hand corner.  The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes, except for a small break where the cover is cut.

The glove is clearly visible, and the cover says that a poster is included.   The poster should be inside the cover behind the disc.

A nice copy of a scarce Michael Jackson oddity and the first copy we’ve had for sale in many years.

Background: Michael Jackson and his brothers, recording as the Jackson 5, left Motown Records in 1975 to sign with Epic.

They were successful after the label change, and Michael Jackson had huge hits with his Off the Wall and Thriller LPs.

After the split, Motown repackaged and reissued a number of earlier recordings by both Michael and the Jackson 5 to capitalize on their new success at Epic.

In 1984, at the height of Michael Jackson mania, Motown released 14 Greatest Hits, an album containing the best-known solo and group tracks from the Motown years.

While the album was released as a regular LP, it was also issued as a limited edition picture disc LP that included a poster and a single glove, which had by that time become Michael’s best-known piece of apparel.

The album did not sell particularly well, peaking at #184 on the U.S. album charts,  and was soon deleted.

Tracks are:

  • The Jackson 5 – I Want You Back
  • The Jackson 5 – ABC
  • The Jackson 5 – The Love You Save
  • The Jackson 5 – I’ll Be There
  • The Jackson 5 – Mama’s Pearl
  • The Jackson 5 – Never Can Say Goodbye
  • The Jackson 5 – Maybe Tomorrow
  • The Jackson 5 -Lookin’ Through The Windows
  • The Jackson 5 – Dancing Machine
  • Michael Jackson – Got To Be There
  • Michael Jackson – Rockin’ Robin
  • Michael Jackson – I Wanna Be Where You Are
  • Michael Jackson – Ben
  • Michael Jackson – One Day In Your Life

Earl “Fatha” Hines – Plays Hits He Missed sealed M&K direct disc LP

earl fatha hines -plays hits he missed LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed copy of the limited edition, direct-to-disk recording of Earl “Fatha” Hines Plays Hits He Missed by Earl Hines.

This title is one of several highly regarded direct-to-disk LPs released by the short-lived Miller & Kreisel label.

About this copy: This copy of Earl “Fatha” Hines Plays Hits He Missed is an original 1978 direct-to-disk pressing by M&K Realtime Recordings.

These LPs were U.S. issues, though the discs were pressed in Germany on high-quality Teldec vinyl.

The album is still sealed in the loose shrink wrap.  The wrap is fully intact except for a 4″ split at the mouth of the cover.  We have secured this with tape to prevent it from opening further.

A beautiful copy of a terrific, well-recorded Jazz LP.

Background: Earl “Fatha” Hines (1903-1983) had a long recording career that extended from the mid-1920s to 1978, when he recorded this, his final LP.

Earl “Fatha” Hines Plays Hits He Missed was recorded direct-to-disk by M&K Realtime Records, where the live performance was cut directly to acetate without first being recorded to tape.

This album, also known by the title of Fatha, has long been sought out by audiophiles as a great example of a well-recorded Jazz album.

Allmusic.com gave Earl “Fatha” Hines Plays Hits He Missed a 3 star review:

This may very well have been pianist Earl Hines’s final recording although he lived until 1983. The concept of this solo LP is quite logical and it is interesting to hear this veteran of the 1920s playing such tunes as “Birdland,” “Misty” and “The Preacher.” But some of these songs are not “hits” he missed such as “Humoresque,” “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” and “Sophisticated Lady”; in fact he recorded those songs previously. Despite him hedging his bets, this is a fine set with Earl Hines showing that he was always in his prime, even 55 years after his recording debut.

Spencer Davis Group – Gimme Some Lovin sealed original U.S. mono LP

spencer davis group - gimme some lovin u.s. mono lp

Offered for sale is an original still sealed mono U.S. pressing of Gimme Some Lovin’ by the Spencer Davis Group.

Mono copies of this LP are relatively rare, as most copies were sold in stereo, and the stereo pressings were in rechanneled, or “fake” stereo, making the mono copies the more desirable pressings.

About this copy: This copy of Gimme Some Lovin’ is an original 1967 U.S. issue on the United Artists label.

As this album is sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears or holes.  This copy has no cutout marks, such as saw marks, cut corners, or punch holes.

There is slight foxing on the back cover under the wrap, but it’s quite modest.

A nearly perfect copy of a pretty good LP.

Background: Released in 1967, Gimme Some Lovin’ was the debut U.S. LP by the Spencer Davis Group, a band that featured future Traffic and Blind Faith member Steve Winwood.

The album reached #54 on the U.S. album chart.   The LP, which was released only in the U.S. and Canada, contained tracks from the band’s first three UK albums:

  • Their First LP
  • The Second Album
  • Autumn ’66

Allmusic.com gave Gimme Some Lovin’ a 3 star review:

The band’s first American LP, issued more than two years after they had put out their first British recordings, consisted of a dozen tracks selected from various U.K. mid-’60s sessions. It was a reasonable enough introduction to the band for those who hadn’t heard most of those, an audience, which, at the time, included virtually all Americans.

Connie Francis – Connie’s Greatest Hits sealed mono U.S. LP

connie francis - connie's greatest hits LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed mono U.S. pressing of Connie’s Greatest Hits by Connie Francis.

About this copy: This copy of Connie’s Greatest Hits is a 1962 pressing on the MGM label of an album that was originally released in 1959 with a different cover.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact except for a 1″ break at the mouth and a 2″ break at the center of the bottom edge.  There is also a 1″ cover split there.  We’ve secured the break in the wrap with tape to prevent further splitting.

There is a tiny amount of mildew under the wrap in the lower right hand corner on the back.

A nice copy of a scarce Connie Francis LP, as most copies were sold when the album was first released.

Background: Originally released in 1959, Connie’s Greatest Hits was the sixth album by Connie Francis.  The album reached #17 on the U.S. album charts.

The original 1959 issue had a photo of Francis with a top hat and a baton.  The 1962 reissue depicted her in a sweater and holding a megaphone.

Both versions of the album contain the same material.

Miles Davis – Kind of Blue sealed Japan LP with cap obi

miles davis - kind of blue japan lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed Japanese pressing of Kind of Blue by Miles Davis, including the rare “cap” obi.

About this copy: This copy of Kind of Blue is a 1981 Japanese pressing of an LP that was originally issued in 1959.

As the album is still sealed, the disc is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.  There are two hype stickers attached to the wrap.

A virtually perfect copy of a jazz LP that everyone should own.

Background: Recorded in 1959 by a “supergroup” that included Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans, the album is also one of the best-selling jazz albums ever.

Kind of Blue is also a very well recorded album that has long been a favorite of audiophiles.

AllMusic.com gave Kind of Blue five stars:

Kind of Blue isn’t merely an artistic highlight for Miles Davis, it’s an album that towers above its peers, a record generally considered as the definitive jazz album. To be reductive, it’s the Citizen Kane of jazz — an accepted work of greatness that’s innovative and entertaining. That may not mean it’s the greatest jazz album ever made, but it certainly is a universally acknowledged standard of excellence. Why does Kind of Blue posses such a mystique? Perhaps it’s that this music never flaunts its genius. It lures listeners in with the slow, luxurious bassline and gentle piano chords of “So What.” From that moment on, the record never really changes pace — each tune has a similar relaxed feel, as the music flows easily. Yet Kind of Blue is more than easy listening. The end results were wondrous, filled with performances that still crackle with vitality. Few albums of any genre manage to work on so many different levels, but Kind of Blue does. It can be played as background music, yet it amply rewards close listening. It is advanced music that is extraordinarily enjoyable. It may be a stretch to say that if you don’t like Kind of Blue, you don’t like jazz — but it’s hard to imagine it as anything other than a cornerstone of any jazz collection.
