Offered for sale is a still sealed limited edition picture disc of Abbey Road by the Beatles, issued in the Netherlands in 1979.
About this copy: This copy of Abbey Road is a limited edition picture disc, issued in 1979 on the Apple label.
The record is still sealed and is presumably new and unplayed.
There is a “Limited Edition” blurb on the cover and a “Made in Holland” sticker on the back cover under the shrink wrap. There are also two stickers from JEM Imports, one on the wrap on the front and one attached directly to the cover on the back.
The wrap is mostly intact, though there are tiny breaks at the two right-hand corners and a bit of corner wear there. There is a 3″ (8 cm) break in the wrap at the mouth of the cover. We’ve secured that with tape to prevent further splitting of the wrap.
A nice copy of a somewhat scarce picture disc and the first copy we’ve had in quite a while.
Background: Picture discs were proving to be quite popular in the late 1970s, so record companies around the world began issuing older and then-new titles in that format as limited editions.
Among the titles issued was Abbey Road by the Beatles, which was released as a picture disc in the United States, Japan, and Holland. The U.S. and Japanese issues were virtually identical – a custom cover with swirling colors and a disc showing the photo from the front cover of the album.
The Dutch issue was different, with the cover being identical to the regular release. The photo on the disc, however, was a composite showing parts of both the front and the back cover. These were exported and were were widely available in U.S. record stores when new.
Released in 1969, Abbey Road was the final studio album recorded by the Beatles. The album reached #1 on both the U.S. and UK album charts.
In many ways, Abbey Road stands apart from the rest of the Beatles’ catalog, an album that gains considerable strength from its lush, enveloping production — a recording so luxuriant, it glosses over aesthetic differences between the group’s main three songwriters and ties together a series of disconnected unfinished songs into a complete suite. Where Sgt. Pepper pioneered such mind-bending aural techniques, Abbey Road truly seized the possibilities of the studio and, in doing so, pointed the way forward to the album rock era of the 1970s. Many of the studio tricks arrive during that brilliant suite of songs, a sequence that lasts nearly a full side of an album. … While a single song or segment can be dazzling, having a succession of marvelous, occasionally intertwined moments is not only a marvel but indeed a summation of everything that made the Beatles great.
