Genesis – The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway original 1975 Japan 2 LP with obi

Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 1975 Japan LP

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of the double album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis, including the original obi.

While Japanese Genesis reissues are fairly common, Japanese first pressings of albums prior to A Trick of the Tail are quite rare.

About this copy: This copy of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is a 1975 Japanese pressing on the Charisma label.

The cover is VG++ and close to M- with faint general wear.  The obi is VG++ with a couple of minor stains on the back, but no tears..  The lyric inserts and custom inner sleeves are VG+ with moderate foxing, but no splits, writing, or tears.

The two discs are M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean discs!

A nice copy of a classic Genesis LP that’s quite hard to find as a first pressing.  This is the only copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: Released in 1974, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway was the sixth studio album by Genesis and the last to include Peter Gabriel as a band member.

The album reached #10 on the UK album charts and #41 on the U.S. charts.

Allmusic.com gave The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway a 5 star review:

Given all the overt literary references of Selling England by the Pound, along with their taste for epic suites such as “Supper’s Ready,” it was only a matter of time before Genesis attempted a full-fledged concept album, and 1974’s The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway was a massive rock opera: the winding, wielding story of a Puerto Rican hustler name Rael making his way in New York City. …Even if the story is rather hard to piece together, the album is set up in a remarkable fashion, with the first LP being devoted to pop-oriented rock songs and the second being largely devoted to instrumentals. … In every way, it’s a considerable, lasting achievement and it’s little wonder that Peter Gabriel had to leave the band after this record: they had gone as far as they could go together, and could never top this extraordinary album.

Offered for sale is a Japanese white label promotional pressing of Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan, including the original obi and an alternate take of “From a Buick 6.”  The cover is still in the original shrink wrap.

While the alternate version of that song with the “harmonica intro” was accidentally pressed on the first issue of the U.S. LP and subsequently withdrawn, all Japanese pressings of the album contain the alternate take.

About this copy: This copy of Highway 61 Revisited is a 1974 pressing on the CBS/Sony label of an album that was originally released in 1965.

The disc is M- with a couple of very faint sleeve scuffs.  There are no spindle marks on the labels; the record may be unplayed..  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a classic LP.

Background: Bob Dylan’s 1965 LP, Highway 61 Revisited turned a lot of heads, and Dylan’s new electric approach caught a lot of listeners by surprise.  This album contains numerous well-known songs, from the title track to Like a Rolling Stone to From a Buick 6.

The album reached #3 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Highway 61 Revisited a 5 star review:

Taking the first, electric side of Bringing It All Back Home to its logical conclusion, Bob Dylan hired a full rock & roll band, featuring guitarist Michael Bloomfield, for Highway 61 Revisited. …Throughout the album, he embraces druggy, surreal imagery, which can either have a sense of menace or beauty, and the music reflects that, jumping between soothing melodies to hard, bluesy rock.

Background:  The Times They Are a Changin’ was the third album by Bob Dylan, originally released in January, 1964.  The album reached #20 on the U.S. charts, and #4 in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave The Times They Are a Changin’ a 4 1/2 star review:

If The Times They Are a-Changin’ isn’t a marked step forward from The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, even if it is his first collection of all originals, it’s nevertheless a fine collection all the same…. His absurdity is missed, but he makes up for it with the wonderful “One Too Many Mornings” and “Boots of Spanish Leather,” two lovely classics. If there are a couple of songs that don’t achieve the level of the aforementioned songs, that speaks more to the quality of those songs than the weakness of the remainder of the record. And that’s also true of the album itself — yes, it pales next to its predecessor, but it’s terrific by any other standard.

The album reached #3 on the U.S. charts and #2 in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave The Cry of Love a 4 star review:

This was the first of the posthumous releases in the Jimi Hendrix catalog and probably the best as it collected most of the studio tracks that were either completed or very near completion before Hendrix died. Some of these tunes, like “Angel” and “Ezy Rider,” have become well-known pieces in the Hendrix canon, but they sit alongside lesser-known gems like “Night Bird Flying” and the Dylanesque “My Friend.”

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Time Out by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Time Out is a 1979 Japanese pressing on the CBS/Sony label of an album that was originally released in 1959.

The cover is M- and is still in the original shrink wrap.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M- with a few spindle marks on the labels and no marks at all on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a Jazz album that everyone should own.

Background: There isn’t much to say about Time Out that hasn’t been said before; the album is generally regarded as one of the greatest jazz albums of all time, and perhaps one of the greatest albums of all time regardless of genre.

AllMusic.com gave Time Out a 5 star review:

Dave Brubeck’s defining masterpiece, Time Out is one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time. It was a risky move — Brubeck’s record company wasn’t keen on releasing such an arty project, and many critics initially roasted him for tampering with jazz’s rhythmic foundation. But for once, public taste was more advanced than that of the critics. Buoyed by a hit single in altoist Paul Desmond’s ubiquitous “Take Five,” Time Out became an unexpectedly huge success, and still ranks as one of the most popular jazz albums ever. This belongs in even the most rudimentary jazz collection.

Miles Davis – Kind of Blue 1999 Classic Records 180 gram 4 LP 45 RPM set

miles davis kind of blue classic records 45 rpm LP

Offered for sale is a copy of the U.S. Classic Records pressing of Kind of Blue by Miles Davis, cut at 45 RPM and pressed as a 4 LP set on 180 gram, single-sided vinyl.

About this copy: This copy of Kind of Blue is a 1999 U.S. pressing on the Classic Records label of an album that was originally released in 1959.

The first two discs are in a gatefold cover with standard artwork for this album.  Discs 3 and 4 are in plain white covers with stickers identifying the disc.

The gatefold cover is M- with a tiny dent in the upper left hand corner.   The other two covers are M-; there is a small dent in the lower right hand corner of disc 4.

The four single sided, 180 gram discs are M- and look unplayed.  All four discs are flat.  Clean discs!

An exceptionally nice sounding pressing of an iconic Jazz LP.

Background: It’s hard to find words to say about Kind of Blue that haven’t already been written; the album is routinely regarded as the best jazz album of all time. It’s also one of the best sounding jazz records ever, as it’s a terrific recording.

Recorded in 1959 by a “supergroup” that included Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans, the album is also one of the best-selling jazz albums ever.

AllMusic.com gave Kind of Blue five stars:

Kind of Blue isn’t merely an artistic highlight for Miles Davis, it’s an album that towers above its peers, a record generally considered as the definitive jazz album. To be reductive, it’s the Citizen Kane of jazz — an accepted work of greatness that’s innovative and entertaining. That may not mean it’s the greatest jazz album ever made, but it certainly is a universally acknowledged standard of excellence. Why does Kind of Blue posses such a mystique? Perhaps it’s that this music never flaunts its genius. It lures listeners in with the slow, luxurious bassline and gentle piano chords of “So What.” From that moment on, the record never really changes pace — each tune has a similar relaxed feel, as the music flows easily. Yet Kind of Blue is more than easy listening. The end results were wondrous, filled with performances that still crackle with vitality. Few albums of any genre manage to work on so many different levels, but Kind of Blue does. It can be played as background music, yet it amply rewards close listening. It is advanced music that is extraordinarily enjoyable. It may be a stretch to say that if you don’t like Kind of Blue, you don’t like jazz — but it’s hard to imagine it as anything other than a cornerstone of any jazz collection.

Deep Purple – The Book of Taliesyn 1977 Japan LP with obi

deep purple the book of taliesyn japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of the second album by Deep Purple, The Book of Taliesyn, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of The Book of Taliesyn is a 1977 Japanese pressing of an album that was originally released in 1968.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a terrific LP.

Background: Released in late 1968, The Book of Taliesyn was the second album by Deep Purple.

The album reached #38 on the U.S. charts, but did not chart in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave The Book of Taliesyn a 3 1/2 star review:

Several months after the innovative remake of “You Keep Me Hanging On,” England’s answer to Vanilla Fudge was this early version of Deep Purple, which featured vocalist Rod Evans, and bassist Nick Simper, along with mainstays Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice. This, their second album, followed on the heels of “Hush,” a dynamic arrangement of a Joe South tune, far removed from the flavor of one of his own hits, “Walk a Mile in My Shoes.”… Vanilla Fudge would cut Donovan’s “Season of the Witch,” Deep Purple followed this album by covering his “Lalena”; both bands abandoned the rewrites their fans found so fascinating. Rod Evans’ voice was subtle enough to take “River Deep, Mountain High” to places Ian Gillan might have demolished.

Deep Purple – Shades of Deep Purple 1974 Japan LP with obi

shades of deep purple japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Shades of Deep Purple by Deep Purple, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Shades of Deep Purple is a 1974 Japanese pressing of an album that was originally released in 1968.

The cover of the original 1968 issue was unique to the Japanese release; the 1974 issue used the same artwork as the U.S. issue.

The cover is VG++, with slight corner wear.  The obi is M-.  The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached.  The obi and cover have ¥2300 price stickers covering the original ¥2000 printed price.

The insert is M-.

The disc is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a terrific LP and one of our favorite Deep Purple LPs.

Background: Released in 1968, Shades of Deep Purple was the debut LP by Deep Purple.  The album reached #24 on the U.S. charts, but did not chart in the UK.

This was the first of three LPs released by the band with Rod Evans on vocals and Nick Simper on bass, when the band had more of a progressive rock sound.

Allmusic.com gave Shades of Deep Purple a 4 star review:

The usual perception of early Deep Purple is that it was a band with a lot of potential in search of a direction. And that might be true of their debut LP, put together in three days of sessions in May of 1968, but it’s still a hell of an album. From the opening bars of “And the Address,” it’s clear that they’d gotten down the fundamentals of heavy metal from day one, and at various points the electricity and the beat just surge forth in ways that were startlingly new in the summer of 1968.
