Heart – Magazine sealed withdrawn 1977 Dutch LP with disclaimer and alternate mix

heart magazine withdrawn 1977 dutch lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed Dutch copy of the original withdrawn 1977 issue of Magazine by Heart.

As with the 1977 U.S. LP, this version was withdrawn shortly after release due to a lawsuit from the band and offers different mixes and recordings from the 1978 re-release.   The cover has a disclaimer on the back cover stating that the album was completed without the band’s cooperation.

About this copy: This copy of Magazine is a 1977 Dutch pressing on the Arista label.

This version of the album was released only in the U.S., Germany and the Netherlands.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact, with no rips, tears, or holes.  There are a couple of small creases along the top edge and spine, caused by the tight shrink wrap.

A nice copy of a terrific LP and a dramatically different one than the 1978 reissue.

Background: After the success of Dreamboat Annie, Heart went back into the studio to record the intended follow-up LP, Magazine.  In the process of recording the album, the band and the record company got into a dispute over royalties and the band walked away from the recording sessions, leaving the album unfinished.  The band signed a contract with Portrait Records and proceeded to record the Little Queen LP.

Mushroom Records, without the band’s permission or participation, took the unfinished material recorded for Magazine, added a couple of live cuts and a B-side from a previously released single and released the album, complete with a disclaimer on the back cover that indicated that the album was completed without participation from the band.

“Mushroom Records regrets that a contractual dispute has made it necessary to complete this record without the cooperation or endorsement of the group Heart, who have expressly disclaimed artistic involvement in completing this record.  We did not feel that a contractual dispute should prevent the public from hearing and enjoying these incredible tunes and recordings.”

Heart immediately sued, and the record was withdrawn from sale as a result of a court order, but not before a few copies had been sold at retail.

The following year, the band and the record company resolved their issues and Heart returned to the studio to complete the album.  In the process, much of the album was re-recorded, including nearly all of the vocals, and the material that wasn’t re-recorded was remixed.  In addition, the track lineup was altered considerably, and the final release was a record that was considerably different from the 1977 first issue.

Opinions vary, but we prefer this version to the later one.

When finally released worldwide in 1978, Magazine reached #17 on the U.S. charts.

Allmusic.com gave Magazine this review:

Problems with the Mushroom label delayed the release of Magazine, which eventually went platinum and peaked at number 17 on the album charts. Only the hard-rocking “Heartless” made it into the Top 40, and the album didn’t really live up to Heart’s last few efforts.

Offered for sale is a Dutch copy of the scarce original withdrawn 1977 issue of Heart’s Magazine LP.

As with the 1977 U.S. LP, this version was withdrawn immediately after release due to a lawsuit from the band and offers different mixes and recordings from the 1978 re-release.   This LP has a disclaimer on the back cover stating that the album was completed without the band’s cooperation.

About this copy: This copy of Magazine is a 1977 Dutch pressing on the Arista label.

The cover is VG, with some edge and corner wear, and an odd wear spot in the lower left and upper right hand corner.

The disc is VG++ and close to M-, with a couple of very faint inaudible sleeve scuffs.  It’s a clean disc that has had little play.

The disc is M- with a few spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinylClean disc!

A nice copy of what may be the Runaways’ best album.

Background: Released in 1977, The Runaways Live in Japan was the only live album released by the band in the 1970s.

The album was originally released only in Japan, Canada, the Netherlands and a few other countries.  It was not released in either the U.S. or the UK.

Allmusic.com gave The Runaways Live in Japan this review:

Because the Runaways were much better known in Japan than the U.S., it stands to reason that their only live album was recorded in that country. …The original Runaways lineup (Joan Jett, Cherie Currie, Lita Ford, Jackie Fox, and Sandy West) was still in place, and the rockers’ primary focus is on material from The Runaways and Queens of Noise. Holding nothing back, Ford is at her most metallic. Except for a handful of bootlegs, Live in Japan is the only documentation of the Runaways on stage.

Dusty Springfield – In Memphis…Plus 1985 UK LP

The cover is VG+ with moderate edge wear.

The disc is VG+ with a few scuffs from the heavy inner sleeve.  It’s a fairly clean disc that has had little play.

A nice copy of a classic LP.

Background: Released in 1969, Dusty in Memphis was the tenth album by Dusty Springfield.

The album reached #99 on the U.S. album chart, but has since come to be regarded as a classic.

Allmusic.com gave Dusty in Memphis a 5 star review:

Sometimes memories distort or inflate the quality of recordings deemed legendary, but in the case of Dusty in Memphis, the years have only strengthened its reputation. The idea of taking England’s reigning female soul queen to the home of the music she had mastered was an inspired one. The Jerry Wexler/Tom Dowd/Arif Mardin production and engineering team picked mostly perfect songs, and those that weren’t so great were salvaged by Springfield’s marvelous delivery and technique. …It’s truly a disc deserving of its classic status.

Heart – Magazine withdrawn 1977 U.S. TEST PRESSING LP with disclaimer and alternate mixes

heart magazine u.s. withdrawn test pressing lp

Offered for sale is an original U.S. test pressing of the withdrawn 1977 version of Magazine by Heart, with the contractual disclaimer on the cover and alternate mixes.

This version was withdrawn immediately after release due to a lawsuit from the band and offers different mixes and recordings from the 1978 re-release.  The lead vocal on “Heartless,” for example, is completely different from the one on the later release.

About this copy: This copy of Magazine is a 1977 U.S. pressing on the Mushroom label, though the disc has plain white labels.

The cover is VG, with edge and corner wear and a few minor creases along the spine.  There are no holes, splits, or writing.

There is an orange sticker attached to the back cover that says “Promotional Copy NOT FOR SALE.”

The test pressing disc is VG++ and close to M- with a couple of very faint hairlines on each side.  There are a few spindle marks on the labels.  It’s a clean disc that plays well.

A nice copy of a terrific LP and a dramatically different one than the 1978 reissue.

Background: After the success of Dreamboat Annie, Heart went back into the studio to record the intended follow-up LP, Magazine. In the process of recording the album, the band and the record company got into a dispute over royalties, and the band walked away from the recording sessions, leaving the album unfinished.  They signed a contract with Portrait Records and proceeded to record the Little Queen LP.

Mushroom Records, without the band’s permission or participation, took the unfinished material recorded for Magazine, added a couple of live cuts and a B-side from a previously released single and released the album in April 1977, complete with a disclaimer on the back cover that indicated that the album was completed and released with neither the cooperation nor the endorsement of the band.

Heart immediately sued, and the record was withdrawn from sale as a result of a court order, but not before thousands of copies had been sent to distributors.  A few copies managed to reach stores before the order to recall them was issued.

The following year, the band and the record company resolved their issues and Heart returned to the studio to complete the album.  In the process, much of the album was re-recorded, and the material that wasn’t re-recorded was remixed.  In addition, the track lineup was altered considerably, a song title was altered, and the final release was a record that was considerably different from the 1977 issue.

The redone album was released in April, 1978 and reached #17 on the charts.  It was certified platinum by the RIAA, helped by the single, “Heartless,” which reached #24 on the charts.

Aretha Franklin – The Best of Aretha Franklin sealed blue vinyl U.S. 2 LP set

aretha franklin knew you were waiting blue vinyl u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed limited edition turquoise marbled vinyl U.S. pressing of Knew You Were Waiting (The Best of Aretha Franklin 1980-2014) by Aretha Franklin.

This limited edition colored vinyl pressing was sold exclusively through Walmart stores in the United States.

About this copy:  This copy of Knew You Were Waiting is a 2021 U.S. release on the Arista/Legacy label; it’s an updated version of an album that was originally released in 2012 with a revised track lineup.

As the album is still sealed, the records are presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.  There is a hype sticker on the wrap that says “Exclusive Marbled Turquoise Vinyl.”

A nice copy of a pretty good set.

Background: Originally released in 2012 as Knew You Were Waiting (The Best of Aretha Franklin 1980-1998),  this set is a double compilation album by Aretha Franklin.

The album did not chart.

Allmusic.com gave Knew You Were Waiting (The Best of Aretha Franklin 1980-1998) a 4 star review:

Legacy’s Knew You Were Waiting: The Best of Aretha Franklin 1980-1998 is the first serious attempt at chronicling Aretha’s RCA and Arista recordings since her stint at the label wrapped up. In between 1994’s Greatest Hits (1980-1994) and this 2012 collection, there was 2003’s Platinum & Gold, released as part of BMG’s ongoing new millennium midline series, which hit the high points but also shoehorned in “Respect” and “Think,” two classics that don’t fit in this context even when placed at the beginning of the collection. Knew You Were Waiting never attempts to disguise itself as something other than a retrospective of the Queen’s last act and, by doing so, it makes a convincing case that Aretha’s ’80s work was pretty strong on its own merits.

This version was withdrawn immediately after release due to a lawsuit from the band and offers different mixes and recordings from the 1978 re-release.  It’s a significantly different album from the 1978 reissue.

About this copy: The copy offered for sale is a still sealed copy of the 1977 issue, complete with the original track lineup and the contractual disclaimer on the back cover, along with a hype sticker that says “At last the long awaited Magazine tapes!”

Todd Rundgren – Runt 1970 U.S. Ampex LP in shrink

Todd Rundgren - Runt 1970 U.S. Ampex LP

Offered for sale is an original U.S. pressing of Runt, the first album by Todd Rundgren, with the cover still in the shrink wrap.

Note: This is an original U.S. pressing, and not the common counterfeit pressing. (see below)

About this copy: This copy of Runt is a 1970 U.S. pressing on the blue Ampex label.

The cover is M- and is still in the original shrink wrap.

The disc is VG++ and close to M- with a couple of faint sleeve scuffs.  This version of the LP plays the tracks listed on the cover and label.  This is a Monarch pressing, with the letters MR in a circle stamped in the dead wax.

We acquired this album sealed about 30 years ago and opened it about ten years ago to see which version of the LP was inside.  We’ve played it once.  It’s as clean an original pressing as you’re ever likely to find and it looks exactly like it did when we opened it, sleeve scuffs and all.

A nice copy of a terrific LP.

Background: Released in 1970, Runt was the first album by Todd Rundgren.

The album reached #185 on the U.S. album chart.

This album was originally issued on the blue Ampex label, and later on the tan Bearsville label.  Both versions were heavily counterfeited in the late 1970s and can be identified by blurry text in the lower right hand corner of the back cover where the words “Queens Litho in U.S.A.” appear.    The text is sharp on the original pressings and blurry on the counterfeits.

Allmusic.com gave Runt a 4 1/2 star review:

Reluctant to start a full-fledged solo career after leaving the Nazz, Todd Rundgren formed Runt, a band that was a front for what was in effect a solo project. Such isolationism lends Runt its unique atmosphere — it is the insular work of a fiercely talented artist finally given the opportunity to pursue his off-kilter musical vision. …He occasionally slips on Runt, delivering tracks that rely on production instead of a blend of studiocraft and songcraft, but it remains a thoroughly impressive debut and one of his finest pop records.
