Alan Parsons Project – Gaudi U.S.S.R. LP

Alan Parsons Project - Gaudi U.S.S.R. LP

Offered for sale is a U.S.S.R. pressing of Gaudi by the Alan Parsons Project.

About this copy: This copy of Gaudi is a 1988 U.S.S.R. pressing on the Melodiya label.

The cover is VG+ with light general wear.

The disc is M- on side one and VG++ and close to M- on side two with an inaudible faint scuff.

A nice copy of a pretty record and the only Soviet Union pressing we’ve ever seen.

Background: Released in 1987, Gaudi was the eleventh and final album by the Alan Parsons Project.

The album reached #57 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Gaudi this review:

Even though 1987’s Gaudi was inspired by architect Antonio Gaudi, its songs seem to lack the assertiveness or the instrumental endowments that usually occur within the Alan Parsons Project’s work. With a leaner, edgier sound that is best represented on “Standing on Higher Ground,” the easiness and touch that should have enveloped this album is noticeably absent. While not a complete failure, the album does reveal some passion with the last track, “Paseo de Graciad,” a finely orchestrated instrumental done exquisitely in full Parsons style.

About this copy: This copy of Try Anything Once is a 1993 Dutch pressing on the Arista label.

The cover is M-.  The custom inner sleeve is M-.  The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of an Alan Parsons album that is hard to find on vinyl.

Background: Released in 1993, Try Anything Once is the first solo album by Alan Parsons.

The album reached #122 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Try Anything Once this review:

Alan Parsons’ Try Anything Once, released in 1993, is made up of beautifully mastered songs that carry their own charisma, thanks to the numerous vocalists that contribute throughout the album. No single track rises from among the others, and the final product actually makes this album work. Singers such as David Pack, Chris Thompson, Eric Stewart, and Jacqui Copland present each tune with refreshing differentiation and style. …The absence of the word “Project” at the end of his name makes no difference, because the music and the atmosphere on this album harbor the same mysterious effects as when it was included.

The album did not chart, though the lead single “Uh Uh No No Casual Sex (Part 1)” got some airplay.

Allmusic.com gave Carrie McDowell a 3 star review:

Routine late-’80s urban contemporary album. McDowell had a strong, if at times unsure voice, and did her best on mostly forgettable material. But other than the single “Uh Uh, No No Casual Sex,” she didn’t generate much attention or action with this album.

Sergio Mendes/Wanda de Sah – Brasil ’65 original red vinyl Japan LP with obi

Sergio Mendes/Wanda de Sah - Brasil '65 red vinyl Japan LP

Offered for sale is an original red vinyl Japanese pressing of Brasil ’65 by the Sergio Mendes Trio featuring Wanda de Sah, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Brasil ’65 is a 1967 Japanese pressing on the Capitol label, pressed in “Everclean” red vinyl.

While this album was originally issued in 1965 in the U.S., the album was not released in Japan until 1967.

This LP was issued without a lyric insert.

The original envelope-style inner sleeve is VG++ with a few minor wrinkles.

The red vinyl disc is VG++ and close to M-, with a couple of faint scuffs on each side.  The album has clearly had very little play.

A nice copy of a terrific album that is rarely found complete.

Background: Released in 1965, Brasil ’65 was the seventh album by Sergio Mendes, though singer Wanda de Sah is featured more prominently on the cover.

Allmusic.com gave Brasil ’65 a 4 star review:

In 1965, Sergio Mendes and his trio conducted their first out-of-Brazil experiment: They recorded in L.A. for the first time in what proved to be their first major move into the U.S. market and their embrace of the new bossa nova sound. Accompanying the Mendes band were then-great vocalist Wanda de Sah and guitarist Rosinha de Valenca. This is deeply swinging bossa; it is crisp and pops out at the listener in every conceivable way. It features exotic and pioneering rhythmic work, smooth accessibility, and sophisticated melodies, many of which were written by the hottest talents in Brazil…. This stands with Mendes’ best work from Brazil and is truly one of his American highlights.

Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 – Herb Alpert Presents… Japan LP with obi

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - Herb Alpert Presents... Japan LP

Offered for sale is an early Japanese pressing of Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 by Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66, including the original obi.

The original 1967 pressing was on the London label; this is the 1968 issue on A&M.

About this copy: This copy of Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 is 1968 Japanese pressing on the A&M label.

Unlike the original issue, this copy has a gatefold cover.

The cover is VG++ and close to M-, with slight corner wear.  The obi is VG++ with very slight wear at the bottom.

This LP was issued without an insert.

The deep groove LP is M- with a faint inaudible hairline on the first track of side two and a few spindle marks.  It’s a very clean disc that has had little play.

A nice copy of a terrific LP that is rarely found complete.  We prefer this pressing to the 1980s Mobile Fidelity issue.

Background: Released in 1966, Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 was the ninth album by Brazilian pianist Sergio Mendes, and the first to feature his Brasil ’66 band.

The album reached #7 on the U.S. album charts, becoming one of the biggest-selling Bossa Nova albums ever.  This well-recorded album has long been a favorite of audiophiles.

Allmusic.com gave Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 a 4 1/2 star review:

After bouncing around Philips, Atlantic, and Capitol playing Brazilian jazz or searching for an ideal blend of Brazilian and American pop, Sergio Mendes struck gold on his first try at A&M (then not much more than the home of Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass and the Baja Marimba Band). He came up with a marvelously sleek, sexy formula: dual American female voices singing in English and Portuguese over a nifty three-man bossa nova rhythm/vocal section and Mendes’ distinctly jazz-oriented piano, performing tight, infectious arrangements of carefully chosen tunes from Brazil, the U.S., and the U.K.

Priscilla Paris – Priscilla Loves Billy 1969 U.S. LP

Priscilla Paris - Priscilla Loves Billy U.S. LP

Offered for sale is an original U.S. pressing of Priscilla Loves Billy, by Priscilla Paris.

About this copy: The copy of Priscilla Loves Billy is a 1969 U.S. pressing on the Happy Tiger label.

The cover is VG+ with light general wear, mostly at the edges.

The disc is VG+, with a few light scuff.  It’s a clean disc that plays well.

A nice copy of a terrific album.

Background: Priscilla Paris is best known as a member of the Paris Sisters, a talented pop group that had limited success in the 1950s and 1960s.  Their biggest hit was the Phil Spector-produced “I Love How You Love Me.”  They released three pretty good albums over the years, and all of them are quite scarce.

Priscilla Paris had the most successful career of the three sisters, releasing three solo albums between 1967 and 1978.  Perhaps the best of them was 1969’s Priscilla Loves Billy, which, despite the misspelling in the title, was a tribute album to Billie Holiday.  It didn’t sell particularly well, partly because the album was released on the short-lived Happy Tiger label, which didn’t have the best distribution.

That’s a pity, as Priscilla Loves Billy is a terrific record.  AllMusic.com gave it four stars:

Girl group alumna Priscilla Paris may not seem the logical candidate to record a collection of jazz standards identified with Billie Holiday, but listen closer to the Paris Sisters’ records and beneath her breathy vocals exists a potent undercurrent of loneliness and loss. Priscilla Loves Billy does real justice to Holiday’s spirit and brilliance, largely because Paris doesn’t even attempt to match the matchless; instead, she favors the kind of light, airy pop arrangements that serve her best, teaming with arrangers Sid Feller and Don Peake to create a sweetly romantic record informed by genuine pathos and poignancy.

Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon 1978 Dutch white vinyl LP shrink

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon 1978 Dutch white vinyl LP

Offered for sale is a limited edition white vinyl pressing of The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, issued in the Netherlands in 1978.

This album almost always has cover issues, but this copy is still in the original shrink wrap.

About this copy: This copy of The Dark Side of the Moon is a 1978 Dutch pressing on the Harvest label.

The cover is M- with a very tiny bit of wear on the lower right hand corner.  The shrink wrap is largely intact with a small break on the back.  There is a large hype sticker on the wrap that says “COLOURED VINYL.”

This version of the LP was issued without inserts.

The white vinyl disc is M- and may be unplayed.

A gorgeous copy of a scarce Pink Floyd LP.  This has the nicest cover of any copy we’ve ever seen.

Background:  The Dark Side of the Moon was Pink Floyd’s eighth album and it’s the one that made them superstars.  Reaching #1 in the U.S. and #2 in the UK, the album is one of the biggest selling albums in history.

While the album topped the U.S. charts for only one week, it spent 741 weeks in the U.S. top 200 – fifteen years.

Due to popularity with buyers, the album has been released in multiple limited editions around the world over the years, including several different colored vinyl pressings and as a picture disc.

The 1978 edition on white vinyl was issued in both the Netherlands and Germany, but not in the U.S., where it was released only as a picture disc.

Allmusic.com gave The Dark Side of the Moon a rare 5 star review:

By condensing the sonic explorations of Meddle to actual songs and adding a lush, immaculate production to their trippiest instrumental sections, Pink Floyd inadvertently designed their commercial breakthrough with Dark Side of the Moon. …Pink Floyd may have better albums than Dark Side of the Moon, but no other record defines them quite as well as this one.

Paul McCartney and Wings – London Town original Japan LP with obi

Paul McCartney - London Town Japan LP

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of London Town by Paul McCartney and Wings, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of London Town is a 1978 Japanese pressing on the Capitol label.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The custom inner sleeve and insert are M-.  The poster is missing.

The disc is M- with a few spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a pretty good Paul McCartney LP.

Background: Released in 1978, London Town was the eighth album by Paul McCartney, with this album also credited to Wings.

The album reached #2 on the U.S. charts and #4 on the UK album chart.

Allmusic.com gave London Town a 4 star review:

Reduced to the core trio of McCartney, McCartney, and Laine after the successful Speed of Sound tour, London Town finds Wings dropping the band façade slightly, turning in their most song-oriented effort since Band on the Run — which, not coincidentally, was recorded with this very trio. And although its high points don’t shine as brightly as those on its two immediate predecessors, it’s certainly stronger than Speed and, in its own way, as satisfying as Venus and Mars. …It’s a laid-back, almost effortless collection of professional pop and, as such, it’s one of his strongest albums.
