Offered for sale is a copy of the U.S. Classic Records pressing of Kind of Blue by Miles Davis, cut at 45 RPM and pressed as a 4 LP set on 180 gram, single-sided vinyl.

About this copy: This copy of Kind of Blue is a 1999 U.S. pressing on the Classic Records label of an album that was originally released in 1959.

The first two discs are in a gatefold cover with standard artwork for this album.  Discs 3 and 4 are in plain white covers with stickers identifying the disc.

The gatefold cover is M- with a tiny dent in the upper left hand corner.   The other two covers are M-; there is a small dent in the lower right hand corner of disc 4.

The four single sided, 180 gram discs are M- and look unplayed.  All four discs are flat.  Clean discs!

An exceptionally nice sounding pressing of an iconic Jazz LP.

Background: It’s hard to find words to say about Kind of Blue that haven’t already been written; the album is routinely regarded as the best jazz album of all time. It’s also one of the best sounding jazz records ever, as it’s a terrific recording.

Recorded in 1959 by a “supergroup” that included Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans, the album is also one of the best-selling jazz albums ever.

AllMusic.com gave Kind of Blue five stars:

Kind of Blue isn’t merely an artistic highlight for Miles Davis, it’s an album that towers above its peers, a record generally considered as the definitive jazz album. To be reductive, it’s the Citizen Kane of jazz — an accepted work of greatness that’s innovative and entertaining. That may not mean it’s the greatest jazz album ever made, but it certainly is a universally acknowledged standard of excellence. Why does Kind of Blue posses such a mystique? Perhaps it’s that this music never flaunts its genius. It lures listeners in with the slow, luxurious bassline and gentle piano chords of “So What.” From that moment on, the record never really changes pace — each tune has a similar relaxed feel, as the music flows easily. Yet Kind of Blue is more than easy listening. The end results were wondrous, filled with performances that still crackle with vitality. Few albums of any genre manage to work on so many different levels, but Kind of Blue does. It can be played as background music, yet it amply rewards close listening. It is advanced music that is extraordinarily enjoyable. It may be a stretch to say that if you don’t like Kind of Blue, you don’t like jazz — but it’s hard to imagine it as anything other than a cornerstone of any jazz collection.

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Street Survivors sealed withdrawn U.S. LP with original cover

lynyrd skynyrd street survivors u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed original U.S. pressing of Street Survivors by Lynyrd Skynyrd, with the withdrawn “flames” cover.

About this copy: This copy of Street Survivors is a 1977 U.S. pressing on the MCA label.

As the album is still sealed, the LP is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is mostly intact; there is a small split in the middle of the bottom edge and a tear in the wrap in the lower right hand corner.

A nice example of an album that is rarely found sealed.

Background: Released in 1977, Street Survivors was the fifth album by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The album reached #5 on the U.S. album charts.

Three days after the album’s release, three members of the band were killed in an airplane crash.  Soon after, the U.S. record company changed the front cover to a photo showing the band posing against a black background, making the original cover showing the band covered in flames an instant collectible.

Allmusic.comg gave Street Survivors a 4 1/2 star review:

Street Survivors appeared in stores just days before Lynyrd Skynyrd’s touring plane crashed, tragically killing many members of the band, including lead singer and songwriter Ronnie Van Zant. Consequently, it’s hard to see Street Survivors outside of the tragedy, especially since the best-known song here, “That Smell,” reeks of death and foreboding. If the band had lived, however, Street Survivors would have been seen as an unqualified triumph, a record that firmly re-established Skynyrd’s status as the great Southern rock band. …it’s tighter than any record since Second Helping and as raw as Nuthin’ Fancy. If the original band was fated to leave after this record, at least they left with a record that serves as a testament to Skynyrd’s unique greatness.

Dave Brubeck – Time Out 1974 Japan LP with obi

dave brubeck time out japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Time Out by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Time Out is a 1974 Japanese pressing on the CBS/Sony label of an album that was originally released in 1959.

The cover is M- with a couple of minor foxing spots near the mouth and is still in the original shrink wrap.  There is a hype sticker attached to the wrap.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M- with a few spindle marks on the labels and no marks at all on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a Jazz album that everyone should own.

Background: There isn’t much to say about Time Out that hasn’t been said before; the album is generally regarded as one of the greatest jazz albums of all time, and perhaps one of the greatest albums of all time regardless of genre.

AllMusic.com gave Time Out a 5 star review:

Dave Brubeck’s defining masterpiece, Time Out is one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time. It was a risky move — Brubeck’s record company wasn’t keen on releasing such an arty project, and many critics initially roasted him for tampering with jazz’s rhythmic foundation. But for once, public taste was more advanced than that of the critics. Buoyed by a hit single in altoist Paul Desmond’s ubiquitous “Take Five,” Time Out became an unexpectedly huge success, and still ranks as one of the most popular jazz albums ever. This belongs in even the most rudimentary jazz collection.

About this copy: This copy of The Best of Bread is a 1974 Japanese pressing on the Elektra label.

Allmusic.com gave The Best of Bread Volume Two a 3 star review:

The ’70s soft rock band Bread released two greatest-hits albums in 1972 and 1974, respectively: …. Diehards might want the original two Best of Breads, but then again, they probably have some of the full-length albums too. Casual fans need not find this album and should instead start with a more comprehensive (and hit-laden) CD compilation.

Black Sabbath – Paranoid 1980 Japan LP with obi

black sabbath paranoid japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Paranoid by Black Sabbath, including the original obi and lyric insert.

About this copy: This copy of Paranoid is a 1980 pressing on the NEMS label of an album that was originally released in 1970.

The cover is M- with small dents on two corners, but no wear. The obi is M-.  The lyric insert is M-.

The disc is  M- with two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a classic LP that we rarely have for sale because no one wants to part with it!

Background: Released in 1970, Paranoid was the second album by Black Sabbath.

The album reached #1 on the UK charts and #12 in the U.S., where it has since sold more than four million copies.

Allmusic.com gave Paranoid a 5 star review:

Paranoid was not only Black Sabbath’s most popular record (it was a number one smash in the U.K., and “Paranoid” and “Iron Man” both scraped the U.S. charts despite virtually nonexistent radio play), it also stands as one of the greatest and most influential heavy metal albums of all time. Paranoid refined Black Sabbath’s signature sound — crushingly loud, minor-key dirges loosely based on heavy blues-rock — and applied it to a newly consistent set of songs with utterly memorable riffs, most of which now rank as all-time metal classics. … Everything adds up to more than the sum of its parts, as though the anxieties behind the music simply demanded that the band achieve catharsis by steamrolling everything in their path, including their own limitations. Monolithic and primally powerful, Paranoid defined the sound and style of heavy metal more than any other record in rock history.

About this copy: This copy of Mr. Tambourine Man is a 1978 U.S. pressing on the Columbia label of an album that was originally released in 1965.

The cover is M- with trace wear on one corner and is still in the original shrink wrap.

The disc is M- with a couple of very faint sleeve scuffs.  The album has likely only been played a couple of times.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a classic LP.

The album reached #6 on the U.S. album chart and #7 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave Mr. Tambourine Man a 5 star review:

One of the greatest debuts in the history of rock, Mr. Tambourine Man was nothing less than a significant step in the evolution of rock & roll itself, demonstrating that intelligent lyrical content could be wedded to compelling electric guitar riffs and a solid backbeat. It was also the album that was most responsible for establishing folk-rock as a popular phenomenon, its most alluring traits being Roger McGuinn’s immediately distinctive 12-string Rickenbacker jangle and the band’s beautiful harmonies.

About this copy: This copy of Fifth Dimension is a 1978 U.S. pressing on the Columbia label of an album that was originally released in 1966.

The cover is VG++ with very slight edge and corner wear.

The disc is M- with a couple of faint sleeve scuffs.  It’s a clean disc that has had little play.

A nice copy of a classic LP.

Background: Released in 1966, Fifth Dimension was the third album by the Byrds.

The album reached #24 on the U.S. album chart and #27 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave Fifth Dimension a 4 1/2 star review:

Although the Byrds’ Fifth Dimension was wildly uneven, its high points were as innovative as any rock music being recorded in 1966. Immaculate folk-rock was still present in their superb arrangements of the traditional songs “Wild Mountain Thyme” and “John Riley.” For the originals, they devised some of the first and best psychedelic rock, often drawing from the influence of Indian raga in the guitar arrangements. “Eight Miles High,” with its astral lyrics, pumping bassline, and fractured guitar solo, was a Top 20 hit, and one of the greatest singles of the ’60s.

Sergio Mendes Trio – In The Brazilian Bag 1966 U.S. stereo LP

Sergio Mendes Trio – In The Brazilian Bag u.s. stereo LP

Offered for sale is an original U.S. stereo copy of In the Brazilian Bag by the Sergio Mendes Trio.

Note: This 1966 LP is a reissue of the 1965 album Brasil ’65 Featuring Wanda de Sah.

About this copy: This copy of In the Brazilian Bag is a 1966 U.S. pressing on the brown Tower label.

The cover is VG++ with slight ring wear.  The disc is M- and may be unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific Bossa Nova LP.

Background: Released in 1965, Brasil ’65 was the seventh album by Sergio Mendes, though singer Wanda de Sah is featured more prominently on the cover.

Allmusic.com gave Brasil ’65 a 4 star review:

In 1965, Sergio Mendes and his trio conducted their first out-of-Brazil experiment: They recorded in L.A. for the first time in what proved to be their first major move into the U.S. market and their embrace of the new bossa nova sound. Accompanying the Mendes band were then-great vocalist Wanda de Sah and guitarist Rosinha de Valenca. This is deeply swinging bossa; it is crisp and pops out at the listener in every conceivable way. It features exotic and pioneering rhythmic work, smooth accessibility, and sophisticated melodies, many of which were written by the hottest talents in Brazil…. This stands with Mendes’ best work from Brazil and is truly one of his American highlights.

Jeff Beck – Blow by Blow 1980 U.S. half speed mastered Mastersound LP

Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow 1980 U.S. Mastersound LP

Offered for sale is a copy of the limited edition U.S. half speed mastered audiophile pressing of Blow by Blow by Jeff Beck, issued as part of Columbia Records’ “Mastersound” series of audiophile albums.

About this copy: This copy of Blow by Blow is a 1980 U.S. pressing on the Epic label of an album that was originally released in 1975.

The cover is M-.  The generic Mastersound insert is M-.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a classic LP.

Background: Released in 1975, the all-instrumental Blow by Blow was the sixth album by Jeff Beck.

The album reached #4 on the U.S. album chart but did not chart in the UK.

Blow by Blow was released in Columbia Records’ short-lived half speed mastered audiophile series, in which they released a number of then-new and vintage titles in high-quality, half speed mastered editions in order to compete with Mobile Fidelity and Nautilus.

These records were mastered with both the tape deck and the cutting lathe running at half speed, which produces deeper bass and better imaging than standard pressings. In addition, these records, which sold for a substantial premium over the regular pressings of the album, were pressed on high quality virgin vinyl.

Mobile Fidelity’s audiophile pressings are better known than those from Columbia, but Columbia’s half speed mastered pressings are, for the most part, exceptionally good ones, and this album is no exception.

Allmusic.com gave Blow by Blow a 4 1/2 star review:

Blow by Blow typifies Jeff Beck’s wonderfully unpredictable career. Released in 1975, Beck’s fifth effort as a leader and first instrumental album was a marked departure from its more rock-based predecessors. … George Martin’s ingenious production and string arrangements rival his greatest work. Beck’s versatile soloing and diverse tones are clearly the album’s focus, and he proves to be an adept rhythm player. Blow by Blow is balanced by open-ended jamming and crisp ensemble interaction as it sidesteps the bombast that sank much of the jazz-rock fusion of the period. … Blow by Blow signaled a new creative peak for Beck, and it proved to be a difficult act to follow. It is a testament to the power of effective collaboration and, given the circumstances, Beck clearly rose to the occasion. In addition to being a personal milestone, Blow by Blow ranks as one of the premiere recordings in the canon of instrumental rock music.

Buffalo Springfield – Buffalo Springfield Again 1968 UK stereo LP

buffalo springfield again uk stereo lp

Offered for sale is an  original UK stereo pressing of Buffalo Springfield Again by Buffalo Springfield.

About this copy: This copy of Buffalo Springfield Again is a 1968 UK stereo pressing on the red and plum Atlantic label

The cover is VG+ with slight discoloration on the back cover and a few minor lamination cracks.  The back cover has six lines of text below the Atlantic logo in the top right hand corner.

The stereo disc is VG, with a number of scuffs on both sides, but no significant marks.  It plays well.

A nice copy of an album that’s quite hard to find as a first pressing.

Background: Released in October 1967, Buffalo Springfield Again was the second of three albums by Buffalo Springfield.

The album reached #44 on the U.S. album charts, though it’s generally regarded as the band’s best album.

Allmusic.com gave Buffalo Springfield Again a 5 star review:

Due in part to personnel problems which saw Bruce Palmer and Neil Young in and out of the group, Buffalo Springfield’s second album did not have as unified an approach as their debut. Yet it doesn’t suffer for that in the least — indeed, the group continued to make major strides in both their songwriting and arranging, and this record stands as their greatest triumph. …Although a slightly uneven record that did not feature the entire band on several cuts, the high points were so high and plentiful that its classic status cannot be denied.
