Offered for sale is an original Japanese promotional pressing of The Royal Scam by Steely Dan, including the original obi.
About this copy: This copy of The Royal Scam is a 1976 Japanese pressing on the ABC label.
The cover is VG++ and close to M- with slight corner wear.
The obi is VG, with a couple of small tears on the back. The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached, but has a few wrinkles and a small tear. The front of the obi is visually M-.
The custom inner sleeve is M-. The lyric insert is missing.
The promotional disc is VG+ with a couple of light scuffs from the original sleeve. There are a number of spindle marks on the labels. The word “SAMPLE” is printed at the top of each label in Japanese. It’s a clean disc, but plays with some surface noise.
A nice copy of one of the harder to find Steely Dan LPs from Japan and the only first pressing we’ve ever had for sale.
Background: The Royal Scam, issued in 1976, was Steely Dan’s fifth studio album, and peaked at #15 on the Billboard album charts. The two singles, “Kid Charlemagne” and “The Fez,” reached #82 and #59 on the U.S. charts, respectively.
Allmusic.com gave The Royal Scam a 4 1/2 star review:
The Royal Scam is the first Steely Dan record that doesn’t exhibit significant musical progress from its predecessor, but that doesn’t mean the album is any less interesting. The cynicism that was suppressed on Katy Lied comes roaring to the surface on The Royal Scam — not only are the lyrics bitter and snide, but the music is terse, broken, and weary. …the best songs on The Royal Scam, like the sneering “Kid Charlemagne” and “Sign in Stranger,” rank as genuine Steely Dan classics.
