Description

Offered for sale is a limited edition mispressed Dutch copy of Their Satanic Majesties Request by the Rolling Stones, pressed on light brown vinyl, rather than the intended white vinyl.

This disc was either made using the wrong color by mistake or was manufactured by a record company employee for their personal use.

About this record: This copy of Their Satanic Majesties Request is a 1978 Dutch pressing on the Decca label.

This is part of a series of colored vinyl Rolling Stones albums that were issued in the Netherlands in 1978.

This album was pressed on both clear and white vinyl as part of that series, and this particular disc was likely intended to be pressed on white vinyl, as most copies in that limited edition series were white.

This copy, however, is not white but is instead a sort of a light brown color, rather similar to the color of chocolate milk.

When pressing white vinyl records, other colors sometimes get mixed in by mistake, but that usually results in a white disc with different colored “swirls.”  This one is not like that; this copy is a fairly uniform light brown color.

We’ve had many copies of this album over the years, but every other copy we’ve ever seen was either clear or pure white in color.  This one isn’t even close to that.

The cover is VG++ and close to M-, with just a bit of wear at the corners.

The brown vinyl disc is M- and may be unplayed.  Clean disc!

A rare variation of a classic Stones LP and the only copy like this that we’ve ever seen.

Background: Released in 1967, Their Satanic Majesties Request was the sixth album (in the UK) by the Rolling Stones and their eighth album in the United States.  This was the first album by the band to be released in both countries with identical material.

The LP reached #3 on the UK charts and #2 in the U.S.  The album was originally released with a lenticular overlay that gave the cover photo a 3D effect.

Allmusic.com gave Their Satanic Majesties Request a 4 star review:

Without a doubt, no Rolling Stones album — and, indeed, very few rock albums from any era — split critical opinion as much as the Rolling Stones’ psychedelic outing. Many dismiss the record as sub-Sgt. Pepper posturing; others confess, if only in private, to a fascination with the album’s inventive arrangements, which incorporated some African rhythms, Mellotrons, and full orchestration. What’s clear is that never before or after did the Stones take so many chances in the studio. … It’s a much better record than most people give it credit for being, though, with a strong current of creeping uneasiness that undercuts the gaudy psychedelic flourishes. In 1968, the Stones would go back to the basics, and never wander down these paths again, making this all the more of a fascinating anomaly in the group’s discography.
