Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Ladies of the Canyon by Joni Mitchell, including the rare “Rock Age” obi.
“Rock Age” was a short-lived series of albums offered in Japan in May-August, 1971 by Warner-Pioneer, featuring artists on Warner Brothers/Atlantic/Reprise and related labels. All had the unusual die-cut “flower” obi. These were quite fragile and are usually missing.
About this copy: This copy of Ladies of the Canyon is a 1971 Japanese pressing on the Reprise label of an album that was originally released in 1970.
The cover is VG++ with slight ring wear near the top of the back cover.
The Rock Age obi is VG++ with no tears, but with a couple of tiny creases in the die-cut area. The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached. This is the nicest obi we’ve eve seen on an LP in the Rock Age series.
The insert is M-. The Rock Age inner sleeve is M-.
The disc is VG+ with a couple of small light scratches on each side. There are a couple of spindle marks on the labels. It’s a clean disc that has had relatively little play.
A nice copy of a very rare Joni Mitchell LP.
Background: Released in 1970, Ladies of the Canyon was the third album by Joni Mitchell.
The album reached #27 on the U.S. album charts.

This wonderfully varied release shows a number of new tendencies in Joni Mitchell’s work, some of which would come to fuller fruition on subsequent albums. “The Arrangement,” “Rainy Night House,” and “Woodstock” contain lengthy instrumental sections, presaging the extensive non-vocal stretches in later selections such as “Down to You” from Court and Spark. Jazz elements are noticeable in the wind solos of “For Free” and “Conversation,” exhibiting an important influence that would extend as late as Mingus. … This album is yet another essential listen in Mitchell’s recorded canon.
