Description

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. pressing of the withdrawn limited edition 180 gram vinyl issue of Famous Blue Raincoat by Jennifer Warnes, issued by Classic Records.

Note: This 1996 “10th Anniversary” edition, pressed by Classic Records’ subsidiary Rock The House Records, was withdrawn immediately after release due to legal issues. (see more below)

About this copy: This copy of Famous Blue Raincoat is a 1996 U.S. pressing on the Rock The House label of an album that was originally released in 1986.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The loose wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.  There is a hype sticker on the wrap that says “Famous Blue Raincoat 10th Anniversary Issue Mastered & Pressed on Classic 180 High Definition Vinyl.”

There is a very tiny corner bend in the upper right hand corner of the cover.

A beautiful copy of a rare variation of a classic LP and the only copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: Released in 1986, Famous Blue Raincoat was the sixth album by Jennifer Warnes, and consisted entirely of songs written by Leonard Cohen.

The album reached #72 on the U.S. album charts and #33 on the UK charts.

In 1996, audiophile label Classic Records planned to release the album as a limited edition pressing on high quality 180 gram vinyl.  A few promotional copies were issued and a few stock copies were apparently shipped to stores, but shortly after the release, the album was withdrawn due to a legal dispute between Classic Records and Jennifer Warnes.

We don’t know what the dispute was about, but all copies in Classic Records’ possession at that time were supposed to be returned to Ms. Warnes.

At one time, this was mentioned on Jennifer Warnes’ Website:

“Audiophile” 180g vinyl albums and “24 karat gold edition compact discs” of Famous Blue Raincoat bearing the Classic Records and Rock The House logos are, with the exception of two hundred promotional copies, totally illegal product, produced without contractual authority, not identified and surrendered to Jennifer as required by a prior settlement agreement with Classic Records

Allmusic.com gave Famous Blue Raincoat a 4 1/2 star review:

Jennifer Warnes was familiar with Leonard Cohen from a tour of duty as one of his backup singers in the early ’70s, but this collection of Cohen’s songs must have shocked her AM radio fans who knew her from her ’70s country-pop hits and her movie themes, if they were even able to connect the woman who sang “It’s the right time of the night for makin’ love” with the one who declared “First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin” over stinging guitar work by Stevie Ray Vaughan on the opening track here. As that pairing suggests, Warnes wisely took a tougher, more contemporary approach to the arrangements than such past Cohen interpreters as Judy Collins used to. …For Warnes, the album meant her first taste of real critical success: suddenly a singer who had seemed like a second-rate Linda Ronstadt now appeared to be a first-class interpretive artist.
