A beautiful copy of a very rare set that’s hard to find either album complete.
Sounds great, too. Not dead-quiet, but pretty close.
Background: Belafonte at Carnegie Hall, released in 1959, was the first major live album and the album that made Harry Belafonte a star. It’s also a terrific recording and the album has long been revered by audiophiles.
The album was released several times in Japan, sometimes as a double album and occasionally as a pair of single LPs.
Allmusic.com gave Belafonte at Carnegie Hall a 5 star review:
The granddaddy of all live albums, this double-LP set captured the excitement of a Harry Belafonte concert at the height of his popularity. Sampled from two consecutive performances of identical material, Belafonte at Carnegie Hall was an anomaly at a time when only comedy albums were recorded outside of the studio environment. It wasn’t the first live album ever made, but it was certainly the first to be a major financial and artistic success. It stayed on the best-selling album charts for over three years and remained in print until RCA discontinued pressing LPs. … For sheer scope and genius of performance, this is the quintessential Belafonte package.
