A nice copy of a scarce (and pretty good) Sergio Mendes LP.

Background: Released in 1966, The Great Arrival  was the eighth album by Brazilian pianist Sergio Mendes.

Allmusic.com gave The Great Arrival  a 3 star review:

The hype-laden title undoubtedly refers to Sergio Mendes’ move to America two years before this album’s release, settling in Los Angeles, where this record was made. Clearly he was out to make it big in the U.S.A., for this album tries to move a bit away from Brazil by spotlighting Mendes’ jazz and pop piano against the elaborate charts of Clare Fischer, Bob Florence and Dick Hazard. …Though an encouraging step forward, Mendes’ first big strike was still several months away.

James Brown – Showtime 1964 U.S. stereo LP

james brown showtime u.s. stereo lp

Offered for sale is a original U.S. stereo pressing of Showtime by James Brown.

About this copy: This copy of Showtime is 1964 U.S. stereo pressing on the Smash label.

The cover is VG+ with slight edge and corner wear.

The disc is VG+ with a couple of moderate sleeve scuffs and a few spindle marks on the labels, but no significant marks.  It’s a fairly clean LP that plays well.

Background: James Brown was not only a good entertainer, but he was a smart businessman, too.  Due to a loophole in his contract with King Records, Brown found a way to record simultaneously for Smash Records, though his titles for Smash didn’t generate the hits that his King LPs did.

Showtime, released in 1964, presents itself as a live album, though the cover never claims that it’s a live album.  It’s not; it’s a “fake” live album consisting of new studio recordings with an overdubbed audience.

AllMusic.com gave Showtime this review:

A transition album. James Brown’s contract with King Records had a few more legs, and the Godfather of Soul was handicapped in what he could wax for Smash Records, his new label. Hence, an album of remakes enhanced — or marred — by overdubbed applause. Some apparently don’t have a problem with overdubbed applause, judging from the lofty prices record collectors ask and get for a copy. Brown does his best retooling on Louis Jordan’s “Caledonia,” “Ain’t Nobody Here But Us Chickens,” and “Somebody Changed the Lock on My Door.”

James Brown – Live at the Apollo 1966 U.S. stereo King LP

James Brown - Live at the Apollo u.s. stereo lp

Offered for sale is a 1966 U.S. stereo pressing of the classic live album Live at the Apollo by James Brown.

About this copy: This copy of Live at the Apollo is a 1966 U.S. stereo pressing on the blue “crown” King label.

It’s a transitional copy; the cover is the first pressing cover (it says “Star of Stars” on the marquee; the later covers had “Voted No. 1 R&B Star of 1962” instead.

The label is the second stereo label, however, with a crown above the word “King” on the label.

The cover is M-.

The disc is VG+ on side one, with a couple of light marks at the beginning of the side.  It plays well.  Side two is M-.

A terrific copy of a legendary live album and an album everyone should own.

Background: In 1962, James Brown reportedly recorded Live at the Apollo by financing it himself after King Records owner Syd Nathan told him he didn’t think a live album would sell.

The result was an album that not only reached #2 on the American album charts, but a record that is generally regarded as one of the best live albums ever recorded.

Allmusic.com gave Live at the Apollo a rare 5 star review:

An astonishing record of James and the Flames tearing the roof off the sucker at the mecca of R&B theatres, New York’s Apollo. When King Records owner Syd Nathan refused to fund the recording, thinking it commercial folly, Brown single-mindedly proceeded anyway, paying for it out of his own pocket. He had been out on the road night after night for a while, and he knew that the magic that was part and parcel of a James Brown show was something no record had ever caught.

Mothers of Invention (Frank Zappa) – Absolutely Free sealed 1970s U.S. stereo LP

mothers of invention absolutely free u.s. LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. stereo pressing of Absolutely Free by the Mothers of Invention.

About this copy: This copy of Absolutely Free is a mid-1970s U.S. pressing on the Verve label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is mostly intact, with tiny breaks at all four corners.  There is slight wear at the two left-hand corners.

The label variation is unknown.  There is a price sticker from the old Record Town record store chain that indicates that the retail price of the LP was $6.98.  That would likely date this pressing to 1974-1975, as the retail price of LPs increased to $6.98 in early 1974.  This may have been the final U.S. pressing on the Verve label before the album went out of print.

The label is most likely the white MGM/Verve label used at that time, but it may be blue or black.

A nice copy of an album that is usually found in terrible condition.

Background: Released in April, 1967, Absolutely Free was the second album by the Mothers of Invention.  The album reached #41 on the U.S. album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Absolutely Free a 4 1/2 star review:

Frank Zappa’s liner notes for Freak Out! name-checked an enormous breadth of musical and intellectual influences, and he seemingly attempts to cover them all on the second Mothers of Invention album, Absolutely Free. Leaping from style to style without warning, the album has a freewheeling, almost schizophrenic quality, encompassing everything from complex mutations of “Louie, Louie” to jazz improvisations and quotes from Stravinsky’s Petrushka. … By turns hilarious, inscrutable, and virtuosically complex, Absolutely Free is more difficult to make sense of than Freak Out!, partly because it lacks that album’s careful pacing and conceptual focus. But even if it isn’t quite fully realized, Absolutely Free is still a fabulously inventive record, bursting at the seams with ideas that would coalesce into a masterpiece with Zappa’s next project.

About this copy: This copy of Stan Getz With Guest Artist Laurindo Almeida is a 1963 U.S. stereo pressing on the Verve label.

The cover is M- and is still in the original shrink wrap.

The stereo disc is VG+ with a couple of scuffs and light hairlines on each side.  It’s a fairly clean disc that has had relatively little play.

A nice copy of a pretty good Jazz LP.

Background:  Released in 1963, Stan Getz with Guest Artist Laurindo Almeida was an album by Stan Getz, in collaboration with guitarist Laurindo Almeida.

Allmusic.com gave Stan Getz with Guest Artist Laurindo Almeida a 4 1/2 star review:

Three weeks after completing his meeting with Luiz Bonfá and only two days after the epochal Getz/Gilberto sessions, Stan Getz was back in the studio recording more bossa nova. Producer Creed Taylor was obviously striking while the iron was hot, getting in as many Brazilian sessions as he could, yet the quality of the music-making remained consistently marvelous. Continuing his practice of running through one star guitarist after another, this time Getz has Laurindo Almeida as the designated rhythm man, featured composer, and solo foil.

About this copy: This copy of Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus is a 1962 U.S. stereo pressing on the Fantasy label.

The blue vinyl disc is VG++ on side one with a couple of inaudible hairlines.  Side two is M-.  There are a couple of spindle marks on the labels.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a classic LP that is usually found in poor condition.

Background:  Known by the titles Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus as well as Cast Your Fate to the Wind, this 1962 album was the fourth album by Vince Guaraldi.

The title track reached #22 on the U.S. singles charts in 1962.

Allmusic.com gave Cast Your Fate to the Wind a 5 star review:

Here is Vince Guaraldi’s breakthrough album — musically, commercially, in every which way. After numerous records as a leader or sideman, for the first time a recognizable Guaraldi piano style emerges, with whimsical phrasing all his own, a madly swinging right hand and occasional boogie-influenced left hand, and a distinctive, throat-catching, melodic improvisational gift. …The whole album evokes the ambience of San Francisco’s jazz life in the 1960s as few others do — and such is this record’s appeal that even non-jazz and non-Latin music people have been grooving to this music ever since it came out.

A nice copy of a nice Ella Fitzgerald LP.

Background: Released in 1964, These are the Blues was the twenty-sixth album that Ella Fitzgerald recorded for Verve Records.

Allmusic.com gave These are the Blues a 3 star review:

Ella Fitzgerald was never thought of as a blues singer but she does a surprisingly effective job on the ten blues songs here, including “See See Rider,” “Trouble in Mind,” “St. Louis Blues,” and Bessie Smith’s “Jailhouse Blues.” She somehow sings more or less in the style of the classic blues vocalists of the 1920s and largely pulls it off. … It’s an interesting set.
