Description

Offered for sale is a 1966 U.S. stereo pressing of the classic live album Live at the Apollo by James Brown.

About this copy: This copy of Live at the Apollo is a 1966 U.S. stereo pressing on the blue “crown” King label.

It’s a transitional copy; the cover is the first pressing cover (it says “Star of Stars” on the marquee; the later covers had “Voted No. 1 R&B Star of 1962” instead.

The label is the second stereo label, however, with a crown above the word “King” on the label.

The cover is M-.

The disc is VG+ on side one, with a couple of light marks at the beginning of the side.  It plays well.  Side two is M-.

A terrific copy of a legendary live album and an album everyone should own.

Background: In 1962, James Brown reportedly recorded Live at the Apollo by financing it himself after King Records owner Syd Nathan told him he didn’t think a live album would sell.

The result was an album that not only reached #2 on the American album charts, but a record that is generally regarded as one of the best live albums ever recorded.

Allmusic.com gave Live at the Apollo a rare 5 star review:

An astonishing record of James and the Flames tearing the roof off the sucker at the mecca of R&B theatres, New York’s Apollo. When King Records owner Syd Nathan refused to fund the recording, thinking it commercial folly, Brown single-mindedly proceeded anyway, paying for it out of his own pocket. He had been out on the road night after night for a while, and he knew that the magic that was part and parcel of a James Brown show was something no record had ever caught.
