About this copy: This copy of Melissa Etheridge is a 1988 UK pressing on the Island label.

The cover is VG++ and close to M- with a couple of minor corner bends.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific LP.

Background:Melissa Etheridge was the debut LP by Melissa Etheridge, and the album reached #22 on the U.S. charts, with the single “Like the Way I Do” reaching #42 on the U.S. singles charts.

Allmusic.com gave Melissa Etheridge a 4 1/2 star review:

This was one of the most stunning debut albums of the 1980s. Given the domination of synthesizer pop on the radio, Melissa Etheridge was a breath of fresh air when she burst out of the gate with this roots rock album sung with a sensitive bravado often compared to Janis Joplin. … Etheridge’s true talent, however, is reconciling uncontrollable emotions such as jealousy with a strong and fiercely independent spirit (“Similar Features,” “Like the Way I Do”). Perhaps that’s why Etheridge became a role model for a generation of young women who found her to be an uncompromising artist unafraid to expose (and celebrate) her strengths and weaknesses. This is a fine introduction to Melissa Etheridge, and it is one of her most enjoyable albums.

Ides of March – Vehicle sealed 1970 U.S. LP

the ides of march vehicle u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed copy of the debut LP by the Ides of March, Vehicle.

About this copy:  This copy of Vehicle is a  1970 U.S. pressing on the green Warner Brothers label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The shrink wrap almost completely intact, though there is small tear in the center of the front cover and a cut corner in the lower right.

A nice copy of an album that’s surprisingly hard to find, especially without cover wear.

Background: Chicago’s the Ides of March released four albums in the early 1970s and put three songs on the Billboard charts, but they’re best remembered for their #2 hit, “Vehicle,” which reminded more than a few listeners of a harder-edged Blood, Sweat, and Tears.

Unfortunately, “Vehicle” was the band’s only Top 40 hit, and they broke up in the mid-1970s.  Founder Jim Peterik later found success as a founding member of Survivor.

Vehicle reached #55 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Vehicle a 3 star review:

A canny mixture of rock and soul, “Vehicle” was fortified with the group’s powerful horn section, which gave the tune more than a passing resemblance to the sound of Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago, both of whom were also enjoying major chart success at the time. After the single hit the charts, the Ides of March were rushed into the studio to cut an album, and Vehicle was supposedly recorded and mixed within the space of a week. To their credit, the band’s barnstorming days in Chicago certainly paid off; despite the tight deadline, the band sounds tight, enthusiastic, and emphatic on all ten tracks, and the songs cover a broader range than just the punchy sound of “Vehicle.” . Ultimately, Vehicle documents this band’s limitations as well as its strengths, but ultimately it’s a good week’s work, and shows the Ides of March had more up their sleeve than their only hit.

You can listen to “Vehicle” here:

Ry Cooder – Jazz 1984 U.S. Mobile Fidelity half speed mastered LP

ry cooder jazz u.s. mobile fidelity lp

Offered for sale is a copy of the limited edition half speed mastered U.S. pressing of Jazz by Ry Cooder, issued by Mobile Fidelity Sound labs.

About this copy: This copy of Jazz is a 1984 U.S. pressing on the Mobile Fidelity label of an album that was originally released in 1978.

While technically a U.S. release, the disc was pressed in Japan by JVC using their proprietary “Supervinyl” compound.

The cover is VG++ and close to M- with very slight corner wear.  The posterboard stiffener is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of one of the rarest Mobile Fidelity titles.  Great recording, too.

Background: Released in 1978, Jazz was the seventh album by Ry Cooder.

The album did not chart in either the U.S. or the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Jazz a 3 star review:

Beginning with his self-titled debut in 1970, Ry Cooder’s records seemed to be as much history lesson as they were entertainment. Not because Cooder was trying to club you over the head with this stuff; he simply gravitated to great songs, no matter what the era or genre. Released in 1978, Jazz seems to be his first conscious attempt at a concept album, in the historical sense. Here he pays homage to some of the early tunes and masters of jazz, ranging from the late 1800s through the “coon songs” of the early part of the next century, to the ragtime and “Spanish” music of Jelly Roll Morton, and the sophistication of cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. …From the informative liner notes by Ry Cooder himself to the brilliant compositions, Jazz is, at the very least, educational. But, a little time spent with this music and you’ll see why it was and continues to be relevant, as well as beloved.

This copy was originally sold as a cutout and did not include a posterboard stiffener when new.

The half speed mastered disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of one of the harder Mobile Fidelity albums to find.  Great recording, too!

Background: Released in 1962, Nat King Cole Sings / George Shearing Plays was a collaboration between vocalist Nat “King” Cole and British pianist George Shearing.

The album reached #27 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Nat King Cole Sings / George Shearing Plays a 4 star review:

Although it would have been interesting to hear Nat King Cole play some piano and perhaps accompany a vocal by George Shearing instead of exclusively the other way around, this session was a big success. Cole is in prime form on such tunes as “September Song,” “Pick Yourself Up,” and “Serenata.” Shearing’s accompaniment is tasteful and lightly swinging, and the string arrangements help to accentuate the romantic moods.

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of Dream Police by Cheap Trick, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Dream Police is a 1979 Japanese pressing on the Epic label.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is VG++ and close to M- with one or two faint sleeve scuffs on side one.  There are a couple of spindle marks on the labels.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a classic LP.

Background: Released in 1979, Dream Police was the fourth album by Cheap Trick.

The album reached #6 on the U.S. album chart and #41 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave Dream Police a 4 1/2 star review:

At Budokan unexpectedly made Cheap Trick stars, largely because “I Want You to Want Me” had a tougher sound than its original studio incarnation. Perversely — and most things Cheap Trick have done are somehow perverse — the band decided not to continue with the direct, stripped-down sound of At Budokan, which would have been a return to their debut. Instead, the group went for their biggest, most elaborate production to date, taking the synthesized flourishes of Heaven Tonight to extremes.

Chicago – Chicago Transit Authority 1984 U.S. Mobile Fidelity 2 LP set

chicago transit authority mobile fidelity lp

Offered for sale is a copy of the limited edition U.S. half speed mastered pressing of the double album Chicago Transit Authority by Chicago, issued by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs.

About this copy: This copy of Chicago Transit Authority is a 1984 U.S.  pressing on the Mobile Fidelity label of an album that was originally released in 1969.

While technically a U.S. release, the discs were pressed in Japan by JVC using their proprietary “Supervinyl” compound.

The cover is M-with trace corner wear.  The posterboard inserts are included.

The two discs are M- and look unplayed.  Clean discs!

A nice copy of a terrific (and great-sounding) album.

Background: Released in 1969, Chicago Transit Authority was the first album by Chicago.

The album reached #17 on the U.S. album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Chicago Transit Authority a 4 star review:

Few debut albums can boast as consistently solid an effort as the self-titled Chicago Transit Authority (1969). Even fewer can claim to have enough material to fill out a double-disc affair. … In April of 1969, the dozen sides of Chicago Transit Authority unleashed a formidable and ultimately American musical experience. This included an unheralded synthesis of electric guitar wailin’ rock & roll to more deeply rooted jazz influences and arrangements. This approach economized the finest of what the band had to offer — actually two highly stylized units that coexisted with remarkable singularity.

Grateful Dead – Wake of the Flood sealed 1979 U.S. LP

grateful dead wake of the flood u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S.  pressing of Wake of the Flood by the Grateful Dead.

About this copy: This copy of Wake of the Flood is a 1979 pressing on the Grateful Dead Records label.  This copy has a sticker on the back cover with a 1979 copyright date that indicates the album was distributed by United Artists Records.

As this copy is still sealed, and the record is presumably new and unplayed.

This copy does not have song titles printed on the cover.

The wrap is mostly intact, though there are tiny breaks at two of the corners and a small split in the wrap in the lower left-hand corner that measures about 2″ (5 cm).

A nice copy of a classic Grateful Dead LP and the first copy we’ve had for sale in quite a while.

Background: After fulfilling their contract with Warner Brothers, the Grateful Dead started their own record company – Grateful Dead Records.  Their first release was Wake of the Flood, released in 1973, and that was their first studio release in three years.

Wake of the Flood didn’t disappoint, reaching #18 on the Billboard charts.

AllMusic.com gave Wake of the Flood four stars:

It had been nearly three years since American Beauty — their previous and most successful studio album to date — and, as always, the Dead had been honing the material in concert. A majority of the tracks had been incorporated into their live sets — some for nearly six months — prior to entering the recording studio. This gave the band a unique perspective on the material, much of which remained for the next 20-plus years as staples of their concert performances. “Eyes of the World” contains some brilliant ensemble playing — although the time limitations inherent in the playback medium result in the track fading out just as the Dead start to really cook. Another highlight is Bob Weir’s “Weather Report Suite,” which foreshadows the epic proportions that the song would ultimately reach. In later years, the band dropped the opening instrumental “Prelude,” as well as “Part One,” choosing to pick it up for the extended “Let It Grow” section. The lilting Jerry Garcia ballad “Stella Blue” is another track that works well in this incarnation and remained in the Dead’s rotating set list for the remainder of their touring careers.

Neil Diamond – Shilo 1970 U.S. LP

neil diamond shiloh u.s. lp

Offered for sale is an original U.S. copy of Neil Diamond’s compilation LP, Shilo.

About this copy: The copy of Shilo offered for sale is a 1970 U.S. pressing on the Bang! label.

The cover is VG++ with slight wear at the bottom of the back cover.  The front cover is clean with a couple of faint pencil lines.

The disc is VG++ and close to M- with a couple of faint inaudible marks on each side.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific LP that’s hard to find with a clean cover.

Background: Neil Diamond recorded two albums for Bang Records in the mid-1960s before leaving for Universal City Records (UNI).  Part of the reason for Diamond’s change of labels is because Bang refused to release the song “Shilo” as a single, and Diamond thought the song had the potential to become a hit.

After Diamond left for UNI, he had a couple of hits there and Bang wanted to capitalize on his success at his new label by finally releasing “Shilo” as a single.  Since they felt that the recording in their possession wasn’t representative of Diamond’s “new” sound, the label took Diamond’s vocal track from the song, recorded a new instrumental track, mixed the two together, and released the song as a single.  “Shilo” reached #24 on the charts, so Bang followed up their 45 release by issuing a compilation LP containing the new single as well as a number of Diamond’s previous hits, with Shilo as the title of the album.

The cover featured dot-to-dot artwork of Diamond with a guitar, inviting the buyer to grab a pen or pencil in order to connect the dots to see the complete image.  Many buyers did so, and because of this, it’s rather difficult to find a copy of the Shilo LP today that doesn’t have writing on the cover.

Allmusic.com gave Shilo a 4 star review:

Shilo is a hits compilation covering Neil Diamond’s Bang years, from his first hit, “Solitary Man,” to the title track, which was issued in 1970 to compete with Diamond’s Uni hits after he left Bang. There is significant overlap with the 1966 album The Feel of Neil Diamond, and all but a couple of Diamond’s early hits are represented here.

dion 1968 u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a copy of the 1968 self-titled LP Dion by Dion, featuring the single, “Abraham, Martin and John.”

About this copy: This copy of Dion is a 1968 U.S. stereo pressing on the Laurie label.

The disc is M- on side one and VG++ and close to M- on side two.  Side two has a small mark at the beginning of the first track that does not affect play.

A nice copy of a a terrific (and in our opinion, underrated) LP.

Background: Dion was viewed as Dion’s “comeback” album and it included the #4 hit “Abraham, Martin and John,” along with an interesting cover of Jimi Hendrix’ “Purple Haze.”

While the single sold well, the LP did not, peaking at #128 on the U.S. album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Dion a 3 1/2 star review:

Featuring his Top Five comeback single “Abraham, Martin and John,” this folk-rock and blues-flavored effort remains Dion’s most fully realized album. In addition to the impressive anti-war original “He Looks a Lot Like Me,” it contains mature interpretations, arranged both acoustically and with strings, of songs by Fred Neil, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, and Lightnin’ Hopkins.
