Neil Young – Journey Through the Past original Japan 2 LP with obi

Neil Young - Journey Through the Past japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of the double album Journey Through the Past by Neil Young, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Journey Through the Past is a 1972 Japanese pressing on the Reprise label.

The cover is M- with trace corner wear.  The obi is VG++ with slight fading.  The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) has been removed.

The custom inner sleeves are M-.  The lyric insert is M-.

The two discs are M- and look unplayed.  Clean discs!

A nice copy of a rare Neil Young LP that has never been issued on compact disc.

Background: Released in 1972, Journey Through the Past was the soundtrack to the film of the same name by Neil Young.

The album reached #45 on the U.S. album charts and has long been out of print.

Allmusic.com gave Journey Through the Past this review:

Most soundtrack albums don’t really contain the soundtracks to movies as they sound and as they are edited for the screen — a song heard in a snippet on a car radio in the film, for example, will be presented in its entirety and with good sound on the album. But the soundtrack to Neil Young’s fantasy/documentary Journey Through the Past, released as a double-LP six months before the movie was seen by the public, does contain an audio record of what’s on screen. Songs are cut off or fade out, to be replaced by fragments of something else, and the sound is not improved. When Young uses footage from television appearances by Buffalo Springfield, you hear them in tinny mono sound, and in what sounds like canned versions of the original recordings with some guitar playing and vocals done live. And when Young intercuts a band rehearsal of his song “Alabama” with remarks by David Crosby or a speech by Richard Nixon onscreen, that’s what you hear on the record. So, Journey Through the Past doesn’t work as well apart from the film as most soundtracks do.

James Brown – Excitement “Mr Dynamite” sealed U.S. stereo LP

james brown -excitement u.s. stereo LP

Offered for sale is a sealed U.S. stereo copy of Excitement “Mr. Dynamite” by James Brown.

About this copy: This copy of Excitement “Mr. Dynamite” is a 1965 pressing on the King label of an album that was previously released in 1962 under the title of Shout & Shimmy and in 1964 under the title Good Good Twistin’ With James Brown, each of which had a completely different cover from this one.

While the cover is marked stereo, we cannot be certain that the album will actually play in stereo.  It might be stereo, it might be rechanneled stereo, or it might be mono.  We can’t find much documentation on this one, but the album contains material that dates as far back as 1958, so it’s hard to be sure.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact except for tiny breaks at the two right hand corners and a s 2″ (5 cm) split at the mouth of the cover.

A nice copy of a rare James Brown LP that rarely turns up in stereo.  It’s the only copy we’ve seen.

Background: Released in 1962, Shout and Shimmy was a compilation album by James Brown, collecting tracks from his first four albums along with the then-new single “Shout and Shimmy.”

Allmusic.com gave the album a 3 star review:

On an album named after the R&B Top 40 title hit and featuring the 1961 Top Ten R&B hit “I Don’t Mind,” James Brown & His Famous Flames can be heard making music in the variety of styles — blues, Little Richard-style rock, doo wop — out of which they eventually would develop the James Brown funk sound of the mid-’60s.

Dan Gurney – Dan Gurney and His World of Racing sealed 1965 Mobile Fidelity LP

Dan Gurney - Dan Gurney and His World of Racing u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. copy of Dan Gurney and His World of Racing released by Mobile Fidelity.

About this copy: This copy of Dan Gurney and His World of Racing is a 1965 U.S. stereo pressing on the Mobile Fidelity label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.  The two top corners are slightly dented.

A beautiful copy of a rare Mobile Fidelity LP.

Background: Before they started pressing high-quality rock, jazz, and classical LPs in the late 1970s, Mobile Fidelity made sound effects records.

Most of their early efforts concentrated on recordings of steam locomotives, but they did do a few other titles, such as this one, which featured interviews and recordings of U.S. race car driver Dan Gurney.

While the album says that it’s a stereo LP that is compatible with mono, it actually wasn’t, and copies that were played on mono players are usually in terrible condition due to groove damage.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

A beautiful copy of a classic LP that looks like new!

Background: Released in 1958, Basie, also known as The Atomic Mr. Basie, was an album by Count Basie and his orchestra.

Allmusic.com gave Basie a 5 star review:

The release of this album in late 1957 marked the beginning of a glorious new phase in Count Basie’s career. Signed to Roulette Records, the newly formed label owned by Morris Levy, the New York recording entrepreneur, jukebox mogul, club owner, and quasi-underworld figure, it took Basie’s core audience and a lot of other people by surprise, as a bold, forward-looking statement within the context of a big-band recording — if not as daring as what Duke Ellington had done at Newport in 1956, still a reminder that there was room for fresh, even dazzling improvisation (especially courtesy of Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis’s contribution) within the framework of a big-band jazz unit.

Black Sabbath – Paranoid Japan LP with obi

Black Sabbath - Paranoid Japan LP

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Paranoid by Black Sabbath, including the original obi and lyric insert.

About this copy: This copy of Paranoid is a 1980 pressing on the NEMS label of an album that was originally released in 1970.

The cover is M- with trace corner wear.  The obi is M-.  The lyric insert is M-.

The disc is VG++ and close to M- on side one, with a couple of spindle marks and a couple of very faint inaudible sleeve scuffs.  Side two is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the label, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a classic LP that rarely turns up for sale because no one wants to part with it!

Background: Released in 1970, Paranoid was the second album by Black Sabbath.

The album reached #1 on the UK charts and #12 in the U.S., where it has since sold more than four million copies.

Allmusic.com gave Paranoid a 5 star review:

Paranoid was not only Black Sabbath’s most popular record (it was a number one smash in the U.K., and “Paranoid” and “Iron Man” both scraped the U.S. charts despite virtually nonexistent radio play), it also stands as one of the greatest and most influential heavy metal albums of all time. Paranoid refined Black Sabbath’s signature sound — crushingly loud, minor-key dirges loosely based on heavy blues-rock — and applied it to a newly consistent set of songs with utterly memorable riffs, most of which now rank as all-time metal classics. … Everything adds up to more than the sum of its parts, as though the anxieties behind the music simply demanded that the band achieve catharsis by steamrolling everything in their path, including their own limitations. Monolithic and primally powerful, Paranoid defined the sound and style of heavy metal more than any other record in rock history.

New Christy Minstrels – Tall Tales! 1963 U.S. stereo red vinyl promotional LP

New Christy Minstrels - Tall Tales! u.s. red vinyl lp

Offered for sale is an original U.S. stereo red vinyl promotional copy of Tall Tales! Legends and Nonsense by the New Christy Minstrels.

This album was issued on red vinyl both mono and stereo; the stereo version is quite rare.

About this copy: This copy of Tall Tales! Legends and Nonsense is a 1963 U.S. stereo pressing on the Columbia label.

The cover is VG, with quite a bit of edge wear, especially on the spine.  There is a sticker on the back cover that says “For Demonstration Use Only – Not for Sale.”

The red vinyl disc is VG+ with a couple of light marks on each side.  There are a few spindle marks on the labels.

It’s a fairly clean disc that plays well, and is the only red vinyl copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: Released in 1963, Tall Tales! Legends and Nonsense was the third album by the New Christy Minstrels, a group that at various times had Barry McGuire (on this LP), Kim Carnes, Gene Clark, and Kenny Rogers as members.

Allmusic.com gave Tall Tales! Legends and Nonsense a 4 1/2 star review:

By the time that the acoustic folk collective known as the New Christy Minstrels released their third long-player, Tall Tales! Legends and Nonsense (1963), the band had been together under the direction of Randy Sparks in several different configurations for less than a year. During that time, however, they had established themselves as a formidable aggregate of collective musicianship. Their multi-faceted talents were likewise prominently featured during the first season of the highly rated weekly network musical/variety Andy Williams Show. Their slightly offbeat brand of innocuous and infectious folky fun is at the heart of this release.
