Buffalo Springfield – Buffalo Springfield Again Japan LP with obi

buffalo springfield - again japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Buffalo Springfield’s second album, Buffalo Springfield Again, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Buffalo Springfield Again is a 1972 Japanese pressing on the Atlantic label of an album that was originally released in 1967 (but was not released in Japan until 1971.)

The cover is M-, with trace corner wear.  The obi is M-.  The lyric insert is VG+, with slight fading, but no tears or writing.

The disc is M- on side one and VG++ on side two, with a couple of faint inaudible scuffs.  It’s a clean disc that appears to have only been played a couple of times.

A nice early pressing of a terrific LP.

Background: Released in October 1967, Buffalo Springfield Again was the second of three albums by Buffalo Springfield.

The album reached #44 on the U.S. album charts, though it’s generally regarded as the band’s best album.

Allmusic.com gave Buffalo Springfield Again a 5 star review:

Due in part to personnel problems which saw Bruce Palmer and Neil Young in and out of the group, Buffalo Springfield’s second album did not have as unified an approach as their debut. Yet it doesn’t suffer for that in the least — indeed, the group continued to make major strides in both their songwriting and arranging, and this record stands as their greatest triumph. …Although a slightly uneven record that did not feature the entire band on several cuts, the high points were so high and plentiful that its classic status cannot be denied.

Traffic – The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys Japan LP with obi

Traffic - The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys Japan LP

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys by Traffic, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys is a 1980 Japanese pressing on the Island label of an album that was originally released in 1971.

The cover is VG++ with slight wear on the top edge.  The combination obi/insert is M-.

The disc is M- with a number of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a classic LP.

Background: Released in 1971, The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys was the fifth album by Traffic.

The album reached #7 on the U.S. album charts, but did not chart in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys a 4 1/2 star review:

The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys marked the commercial and artistic apex of the second coming of Traffic, which had commenced in 1970 with John Barleycorn Must Die. The trio who made that album were augmented by three others (Ric Grech, Jim Gordon, and “Reebop” Kwaku Baah) in the interim, though apparently the Low Spark sessions featured varying combinations of these musicians, plus some guests. But where their previous album had grown out of sessions for a Steve Winwood solo album and retained that focus, Low Spark pointedly contained changes of pace from his usual contributions of midtempo, introspective jam tunes. …”The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys” was one of Traffic’s greatest songs as well as its longest to date. The result was an album that quickly went gold and then platinum in the U.S., where the group toured frequently.

The cover is M- with a couple of minor creases.  The obi is M-.  The “hojyuyho” (reorder tag) is still attached.

This LP was issued without an insert.

There is a minor inaudible scuff through the first track on side one.  Aside from this the record looks unplayed.  The scuff may be a manufacturing error.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a rare Jazz LP.

Background: Released in 1965, Autobiography was the ninth album by Jazz cornetist Nat Adderley and his first for Atlantic Records.

Allmusic.com gave Autobiography a 4 star review:

Cornetist Nat Adderley’s first album as a leader after the collapse of Riverside found him switching to Atlantic and performing eight of his most rewarding compositions. With several brass players, Seldon Powell on tenor and flute, pianist Joe Zawinul (who provided the arrangements), bassist Sam Jones, Grady Tate or Bruno Carr on drums and guest spots by Victor Pantoja and Willie Bobo on Latin percussion, Nat performs such numbers as his greatest hit “Work Song,” “Sermonette,” “The Old Country,” “Little Boy With The Sad Eyes” and “Jive Samba.”

Johnny Mathis – Heavenly original U.S. stereo “6 eye” LP

johnny mathis - heavenly u.s. lp

Offered for sale is an original U.S. stereo pressing of Heavenly by Johnny Mathis, on the “6 eye” Columbia label.

This pressing sounds quite a bit better than the 1983 Mobile Fidelity half speed mastered version.

About this copy: This copy of Heavenly is a 1959 U.S. pressing on the Columbia label.

This is an original issue, without the letters “CBS” at the top of the label.

The cover is VG, with light general wear on the front cover.  There is a sticker with the number “74” in the upper right hand corner of the back cover.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a pretty good album that’s hard to find as a first pressing.  Great recording, too!

Background:  Released in 1959, Heavenly was the eighth album by Johnny Mathis.

The album reached #1 on the U.S. album charts, helped by the single “Misty,” which reached #12 on the U.S. singles charts.

Allmusic.com gave Heavenly a 4 1/2 star review:

Heavenly is Johnny Mathis’ most successful regular album release, exceeded in his catalog only by the compilation Johnny’s Greatest Hits and the seasonal Merry Christmas collection. It’s not hard to understand why; this record is the epitome of Mathis’ approach to music. … As a result, he was a recording veteran while still being fresh enough to give his performances real feeling. It all came together on Heavenly, Mathis’ longest running number one album which spent more than five-and-a-half years in the charts.

James Brown – “Live” at the Apollo Japan 2 LP set with obi

James Brown - "Live" at the Apollo Japan LP

Offered for sale is a 1972 Japanese pressing of the double album “Live” at the Apollo by James Brown, including the original obi.

Note: The title is a bit misleading; this album is the same album that was released in the United States in 1968 as Live at the Apollo – Volume 2.

About this copy: This copy of “Live” at the Apollo is a 1972 pressing on the Polydor label.

The cover is VG, with slight ring wear, and some corner and edge wear.

The obi is M-.  This album was issued without an insert, as the gatefold cover has a four page lyric booklet.

The two discs are M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean discs!

A nice copy of one of the great live albums of all time.

Background: Released in 1968, Live at the Apollo, Volume 2 was the fifth live album by James Brown.

The album reached #32 on the U.S. album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Live at the Apollo, Volume 2 a 4 star review:

The first volume of Live at the Apollo [1963] captured the R&B fury that would single-handedly define the soul music genre. While this volume reveals Brown’s updated stage show, it more importantly offers another prolific observation into the future of R&B — funk. It would be nearly two years before Brown would discover the likes of Bootsy Collins and ultimately form the J.B.’s. However, as Live at the Apollo, Vol. II testifies, “soul brother number one” is already submerging his band into more extended musical tangents, bobbing and weaving within a tight framework. …Brown’s percussive, heart-attack inducing call and response will leave even the most unflappable enthusiast slack jawed.

Allmusic.com gave Something to Remember a 4 1/2 star review:

Something to Remember is Madonna’s second greatest-hits collection, compiling a selection of the singer’s ballads. …. Throughout the album, Madonna proves that she’s a terrific singer whose voice has improved over the years. Not one of the tracks is second-rate, and the best songs on Something to Remember rank among the best pop music of the ’80s and ’90s.

Metallica – Master of Puppets sealed U.S. half speed mastered LP

metallica master of puppets u.s. half speed mastered lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed limited edition half speed mastered U.S. pressing of Master of Puppets by Metallica.

About this copy: This copy of Master of Puppets is a 2008 U.S. pressing on the Warner Brothers label of an album that was originally released in 1986.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.  There is a hype sticker on the wrap that says “Half Speed Mastered at Mobile Fidelity from the original analog master tapes.”  There is an original price sticker attached to the wrap (not shown in photos.)

A nice copy of a scarce Metallica LP.

Background: Released in 1986, Master of Puppets was the third album by Metallica, and the last to feature original bassist Cliff Burton.

The album reached #29 on the U.S. charts, but has since sold more than six million copies in the U.S. alone.

Allmusic.com gave Master of Puppets a 5 star review:

Even though Master of Puppets didn’t take as gigantic a leap forward as Ride the Lightning, it was the band’s greatest achievement, hailed as a masterpiece by critics far outside heavy metal’s core audience. It was also a substantial hit, reaching the Top 30 and selling three million copies despite absolutely nonexistent airplay. Instead of a radical reinvention, Master of Puppets is a refinement of past innovations….. Some critics have called Master of Puppets the best heavy metal album ever recorded; if it isn’t, it certainly comes close.

Grand Funk – Live Album 1978 Japan white label promotional 2 LP set with obi

Grand Funk - Live Album Japan promo lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese white label promotional copy of the double album Live Album by Grand Funk Railroad, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Grand Funk Railroad’s Live Album is a 1978 pressing on the Capitol label of an album that was originally released in 1970.

The cover is VG++ with slight edge and corner wear.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

Unlike earlier issues, this pressing did not include a poster.

The two white label promo discs are M- and look unplayed.  Clean discs!

A nice copy of a classic LP.

Background: After three increasingly successful studio albums, Grand Funk Railroad released a live album, appropriately titled Live Album.

Despite critical indifference, the two record set reached #5 on the U.S. album charts and reached #29 in the UK, where it was their only album to make the UK Top 40.

Site visitors at Allmusic.com gave Live Album a 4 1/2 star rating:

Either you love or you hate it. Live Album by Grand Funk Railroad was a smash when released and those who loved it played it to death. A hard rock phenomenon of the waning days of the Sixties, Grand Funk proved over and over that they were the live performing act of the time, and this album is a testament to their in-concert power.

You can listen to “Into the Sun” here:

While Grand Funk was quite popular in the U.S., they were also surprisingly popular in Japan.  There, first pressings of four of the band’s first five studio albums (all except Survival) were pressed on red vinyl, as was a Japan-only compilation called The Best of Grand Funk.

Live Album was an interesting exception.  Stock (retail) copies of Live Album were all pressed on black vinyl.

Promotional copies sent to radio stations, however, were pressed with the first disc on red vinyl and the second disc on black vinyl.

As only 100-200 copies were pressed for promotional use, the hybrid red/black vinyl copies are quite rare.

Black Sabbath – Paranoid Japan LP with obi

Black Sabbath - Paranoid Japan LP

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Paranoid by Black Sabbath, including the original obi and lyric insert.

About this copy: This copy of Paranoid is a 1980 pressing on the NEMS label of an album that was originally released in 1970.

The cover is M- with trace corner wear.  The obi is M-.  The lyric insert is M-.

The disc is VG++ and close to M- on side one, with a couple of spindle marks and a couple of very faint inaudible sleeve scuffs.  Side two is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the label, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a classic LP that rarely turns up for sale because no one wants to part with it!

Background: Released in 1970, Paranoid was the second album by Black Sabbath.

The album reached #1 on the UK charts and #12 in the U.S., where it has since sold more than four million copies.

Allmusic.com gave Paranoid a 5 star review:

Paranoid was not only Black Sabbath’s most popular record (it was a number one smash in the U.K., and “Paranoid” and “Iron Man” both scraped the U.S. charts despite virtually nonexistent radio play), it also stands as one of the greatest and most influential heavy metal albums of all time. Paranoid refined Black Sabbath’s signature sound — crushingly loud, minor-key dirges loosely based on heavy blues-rock — and applied it to a newly consistent set of songs with utterly memorable riffs, most of which now rank as all-time metal classics. … Everything adds up to more than the sum of its parts, as though the anxieties behind the music simply demanded that the band achieve catharsis by steamrolling everything in their path, including their own limitations. Monolithic and primally powerful, Paranoid defined the sound and style of heavy metal more than any other record in rock history.

Offered for sale is a original German pressing of the soundtrack to Who’s That Girl featuring Madonna and others.

About this copy: This copy of Who’s That Girl is a 1987 German pressing on the Sire label.

The cover is VG+ with a few creases and a small tear on the front cover where a price tag was removed.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce Madonna LP.

Background: Released in 1987, Who’s That Girl is the soundtrack to the film of the same name.

The album features four songs by Madonna, along with tracks by Duncan Faure, Club Nouveau, Michael Davidson, Scritti Politti and Coati Mundi.

The album reached #4 on the UK album charts and #7 on the U.S. charts.

Allmusic.com gave Who’s That Girl this review:

In the strictest sense, Who’s That Girl isn’t a Madonna album — it’s a soundtrack album to her 1987 comedy, featuring competent but uninspiring dance-pop by Club Nouveau, Scritti Politti, Coati Mundi, Michael Davidson, and Duncan Faure. Madonna has four new tracks on the record, including the number one “Who’s That Girl” and the number two “Causing a Commotion.”
