Beatles – Hear the Beatles Tell All original U.S. mono Vee Jay LP – odd label variation

Beatles - Hear the Beatles Tell All u.s. lp

Offered for sale is an original U.S. mono pressing of Hear the Beatles Tell All by the Beatles.

This is the original U.S. mono pressing and not one of the later reissues that are mislabeled as stereo.

About this copy: This copy of Hear the Beatles Tell All is a 1964 pressing on the Vee Jay label.

This version is an odd variation that has a different catalog number on each label:  Side one has VJLP 202 PRO and side two has VJLP 202.

The cover is VG, with a stain at the left hand edge.  The cover presents well

The disc is  VG with a number of light marks, but nothing significant.

Both sides play quite well with minimal noise.

A nice playable copy of a Beatles LP that’s quite hard to find as an original pressing and the only copy we’ve seen with this label variation.

Background:  Hear the Beatles Tell All is an interview LP that was originally released in 1964 on Vee Jay records.  The album features disk jockeys Jim Steck and Dave Hull interviewing the Beatles, accompanied by crowd noises and percussion from Wrecking Crew drummer Hal Blaine.

The recording is actually quite sophisticated for its time and it was the only Beatles album to which Vee Jay retained the rights after Capitol Records took over their Beatles catalog in late 1964.

The original pressings were in mono only; in 1979, the company that then owned the rights to Vee Jay material reissued the LP with a “stereo” banner at the top.

Mike Oldfield – Five Miles Out German LP

Mike Oldfield - Five Miles Out German LP

Offered for sale is a German pressing of Five Miles Out by Mike Oldfield.

About this copy: This copy of Five Miles Out is a late 1980s German pressing on the Virgin label of an album that was originally released in 1982.

The cover is M-.  There is a sticker on the cover that says “Virgin Value.”

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc.

A nice copy of a pretty good LP.

Background: Released in 1982, Five Miles Out was the seventh album by Mike Oldfield.

The album reached #7 on the UK album chart and #164 on the U.S. chart.   The song “Family Man” later became a hit for Daryl Hall and John Oates.

Allmusic.com gave Five Miles Out a 4 star review:

Mike Oldfield was back into the extended composition game with Five Miles Out, continuing the “Taurus” series with the mammoth “Taurus II,” an entertaining enough romp with references to Irish music, brass bands and Oldfield’s beloved Morris. The true standout, though, was the title track, a paean to flying in bad weather that could easily double for Oldfield’s feelings about the sort of monumental critical drubbing he was accustomed to receiving. “Family Man” became a huge worldwide hit for Hall & Oates.

Mike Oldfield – Boxed 1976 UK 4 LP quadraphonic box set

Mike Oldfield - Boxed 1976 UK 4 LP

Offered for sale is a copy of the 1976 UK 4 LP set Boxed, by Mike Oldfield, including the original 12 page booklet.

This album includes SQ quadraphonic remixes of Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge, and Ommadawn, along with a fourth LP with excerpts of albums by other artists on which Oldfield played.

The album will play on stereo turntables, but the mixes are dramatically different from the original releases of these albums.

About this copy: This copy of Boxed is a 1976 pressing on the Virgin label.

The box is VG+ with light general wear.

The booklet is VG++ with a few minor wrinkles.  This pressing included four colored inner sleeves with Virgin logos.

The four discs are all M- and look unplayed, aside from a .5 cm inaudible mark at the very end of side one of Tubular Bells.

A nice copy of a rare (and very good) Mike Oldfield set.

Background: Released in 1976, Boxed offered dramatically different mixes of Mike Oldfield’s first three albums, along with a fourth LP called Collaborations and a 12 page booklet.

The album, not released in the U.S., reached #22 on the UK album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Boxed a 4 1/2 star review:

A curious four-LP set consisting of the original version of Ommadawn, a vastly remixed version of Hergest Ridge, a remixed/remodeled version of Tubular Bells, and a platter called Collaborations in which Oldfield’s bits on the recordings of others were excerpted, often with the result that sans context, the excerpts made little sense (certainly the case with Oldfield’s work alongside David Bedford). The altered Tubular Bells is most startling at the close — instead of the familiar “Sailor’s Hornpipe,” there’s a long, rambling bit involving Viv Stanshall, engineer Tom Newman and Oldfield, remotely miked, wandering around the Virgin Mansion, Stanshall drunkenly commenting on the various objects they encounter while Newman and Oldfield play the “Hornpipe.” The remixing of Hergest Ridge, drastic though it is (even the sleigh bells vanish), is rather less upsetting.

Rush – Caress of Steel Japan LP with obi

Rush - Caress of Steel Japan LP

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Caress of Steel by Rush, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Caress of Steel is a 1978 Japanese pressing on the Mercury label of an album that was originally released in 1975.

The cover is VG++ and close to M- with slight corner wear.  The obi is M-.  The insert is VG++ with a few wrinkles and a tiny tear.

The disc is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a rare Rush LP, as their early albums sold poorly in Japan.

Background: Released in 1975, Caress of Steel was the third album by Canadian band Rush.

The album reached #148 on the U.S. album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Caress of Steel this review:

When Rush finished their third album, Caress of Steel, the trio was assured that they had created their breakthrough masterpiece. But when the album dropped off the charts soon after its release, it proved otherwise. While it was Rush’s first release that fully explored their prog rock side, it did not contain the catchy and more traditional elements of their future popular work — it’s quite often too indulgent and pretentious for a mainstream rock audience to latch onto.

Steely Dan – Aja 1980 Japan LP with obi

Steely Dan - Aja Japan LP

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Aja by Steely Dan, complete with original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Aja is a 1980 pressing on the MCA label of an album that was originally issued in 1977.

Unlike earlier pressings, this copy does not have a gatefold cover.

The cover is VG++ and close to M- with slight edge wear.-.  The obi is M-.  The insert is VG+ with two stickers attached to it.

The disc is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific LP.

Background: All seven of Steely Dan’s original albums that were released between 1972 and 1980 have been highly regarded by audiophiles for years, but perhaps none quite as much as 1977’s Aja.

This album, which combined the work of founders Walter Becker and Donald Fagen with studio musicians, combined rock and jazz while keeping the album radio-friendly.

AllMusic.com gave Aja 4 1/2 stars:

Steely Dan hadn’t been a real working band since Pretzel Logic, but with Aja, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen’s obsession with sonic detail and fascination with composition reached new heights. A coolly textured and immaculately produced collection of sophisticated jazz-rock, Aja has none of the overt cynicism or self-consciously challenging music that distinguished previous Steely Dan records. It’s complex music delivered with ease, and although the duo’s preoccupation with clean sound and self-consciously sophisticated arrangements would eventually lead to a dead end, Aja is a shining example of jazz-rock at its finest.

Finding clean, quiet copies of Steely Dan’s original albums is difficult, and the master tapes for those albums were reportedly either mislaid or destroyed in the mid-1980s. While there have been several attempts by audiophile labels to give Aja a proper treatment, all were produced from lower-generation tapes and many audiophiles believe that the best sounding pressing of the album is the original 1977 ABC Records issue.

Pink Floyd – Atom Heart Mother red vinyl Japan LP with obi

Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother red vinyl Japan LP

Offered for sale is an original red vinyl Japanese pressing of Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd, including the original obi.

About this copy:  This copy of Atom Heart Mother is a 1970 Japanese pressing on the Odeon label, pressed on “Everclean” red vinyl.

The cover is VG+, with no wear, but with some discoloration from age.

The obi is VG, with a few wrinkles and two very small tears.  The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is missing.

The insert booklet is VG+ with some discoloration from age, but no writing or tears.

The red vinyl disc is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of an album that’s hard to find complete on red vinyl.

Background:  Released in 1970, Atom Heart Mother was the fifth album by Pink Floyd.

The album reached #1 on the UK charts, but peaked at #55 on the U.S. charts, making it what was then the highest-ever charting album in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave Atom Heart Mother a 3 star review:

Appearing after the sprawling, unfocused double-album set Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother may boast more focus, even a concept, yet that doesn’t mean it’s more accessible. If anything, this is the most impenetrable album Pink Floyd released while on Harvest, which also makes it one of the most interesting of the era. Still, it may be an acquired taste even for fans, especially since it kicks off with a side-long, 23-minute extended orchestral piece that may not seem to head anywhere, but is often intriguing, more in what it suggests than what it achieves.

In Japan, the first pressing of Atom Heart Mother was pressed on red “Everclean” vinyl and while it’s the most common Pink Floyd title to find on red wax, it’s still quite difficult to find one in playable condition and even harder to find with the original obi.  Most of the copies of Atom Heart Mother we’ve seen from Japan over the years were in poor condition.

Boston – Don’t Look Back Japan LP with obi

Boston - Don't Look Back Japan LP

Offered for sale is an original 1978 Japanese pressing of Boston’s Don’t Look Back, complete with obi, lyric insert, and custom inner sleeve.

About this copy: The copy offered for sale is a 1978 Japanese first pressing on the orange Epic label.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.

The lyric insert and custom inner sleeve are M-.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a classic rock album.

Background: Boston’s second LP came out sooner than guitarist Tom Scholz would have liked, but it still sold millions of copies and also happens to be a great sounding, well recorded album.   While this album was later reissued in Japan as part of their “Mastersound” series, that particular pressing was digitally remastered, this one, which is all analog, is the better-sounding pressing of the two.

Released in August, 1978, Don’t Look Back reached #1 on the U.S. album charts and has sold more than seven million copies to date.

Allmusic.com gave Don’t Look Back a 4 star review:

Boston’s many fans were upset that it took the band two years to follow up its monster debut. When it arrived, the sophomore effort DON’T LOOK BACK was a virtual rewrite of BOSTON. This didn’t stop the masses from snapping up the album, which ultimately racked up sales in the multi-platinum range.

Black Sabbath – Vol. 4 Japan LP with obi

Black Sabbath - Vol. 4 Japan LP

Offered for sale is a Japanese issue of Vol. 4 by Black Sabbath, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Vol. 4 is a 1980 Japanese issue of an LP that was originally released in 1972.

Unlike the original issue, this edition does not have a gatefold cover.

The cover is M- with trace corner wear.  The obi and insert are M-.

The disc is M- with a few spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a terrific record, as this album is prone to cover wear.

Background: As the title suggests, Vol.4 was the fourth studio album by Black Sabbath.  Released in 1972, the album reached #8 on the UK charts and #13 in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave Vol. 4 a 5 star review:

Vol. 4 is the point in Black Sabbath’s career where the band’s legendary drug consumption really starts to make itself felt. And it isn’t just in the lyrics, most of which are about the blurry line between reality and illusion. Vol. 4 has all the messiness of a heavy metal Exile on Main St., and if it lacks that album’s overall diversity, it does find Sabbath at their most musically varied, pushing to experiment amidst the drug-addled murk. …Add all of this up, and Vol. 4 is a less cohesive effort than its two immediate predecessors, but is all the more fascinating for it. Die-hard fans sick of the standards come here next, and some end up counting this as their favorite Sabbath record for its eccentricities and for its embodiment of the band’s excesses.

Amboy Dukes (Ted Nugent) – Survival of the Fittest/Marriage on the Rocks UK 2 LP set

Amboy Dukes- Survival of the Fittest/Marriage on the Rocks UK 2 LP

Offered for sale is a copy of the UK double album Survival of the Fittest/Marriage on the Rocks by Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes.

About this copy: This copy of Survival of the Fittest/Marriage on the Rocks is a 1977 UK pressing on the Polydor label of albums that were originally released in 1970 and 1971.

The cover is VG+ with light general wear, mostly at the edges.

The two discs are VG++ and close to M-, with one or two light hairlines on each side.  They’re clean discs that have had little play.

A nice copy of a scarce Ted Nugent LP.

Background:  Released in 1977, Survival of the Fittest/Marriage on the Rocks was a double album issued in the UK that paired two albums that had originally been released separately:

Marriage on the Rocks/Rock Bottom – This was the fourth album by the Amboy Dukes.  It reached #170 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Marriage on the Rocks/Rock Bottom a 3 star review:

Amboy Dukes’ Marriage on the Rocks/Rock Bottom is a very musical record, more experimental than their releases on Mainstream Records, not as soaked in the Pat Travers blues-rock which the follow-up, Survival of the Fittest embraced, and not as rocking as The Call of the Wild, which would be released about four years after this on Warner Brothers’ Discreet label. Interesting to note the mutation of the Nugent sound with every label change. This work on Polydor is certainly more in the Ten Years After bag (especially on Survival of the Fittest, Live), with keyboards up there in the mix almost equal to Ted Nugent’s guitar.

Survival of the Fittest Live – This was the fifth album by the Amboy Dukes.  It reached #129 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Survival of the Fittest Live this review:

After three albums on Mainstream Records and a Top 20 smash with “Journey to the Center of the Mind,” Ted Nugent brought his new aggregation to Polydor(the late Lillian Roxon claimed there were 35 personnel changes prior to their first and only hit). This second album on that label (and before they would jump to Warner and eventually Epic), was recorded live at The Eastowne Theater in Detroit, MI, July 31 and August 1, 1970. A prime candidate for re-release with bonus tracks, the full hit is not here; the single disc contains six tracks, including the 21-minute-and-20-second epic “Prodigal Man,” written by Nugent and sung by keyboardist Andy Solomon. …. Steve Farmer is long gone from here, and only Andy Solomon and Ted Nugent remain from the band who had the hit two years before this concert was recorded. This is really Ted Nugent moving away from the group concept and gearing up for his heavy metal fame in the ’70s and ’80s. It is mildly interesting.
