A nice copy of a scarce Bill Evans LP.

Allmusic.com gave Trio ’65 a 4 star review:

Although all eight of the selections heard on this Verve release have been recorded on other occasions by pianist Bill Evans, these renditions hold their own. Teamed up with bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Larry Bunker (his regular trio of 1963-1965), Evans plays definitive versions of such songs as Johnny Carisi’s “Israel,” “How My Heart Sings,” “Who Can I Turn To,” and “If You Could See Me Now.”

About this copy: This copy of Blue Train is a 1978 Japanese pressing on the Blue Note label of an album that was originally released in 1957.

The cover is VG++ with no wear, but with slight foxing.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific LP.

Background: Released in 1957, Blue Train was John Coltrane’s only album for Blue Note.

Allmusic.com gave Blue Train a 5 star review:

Although never formally signed, an oral agreement between John Coltrane and Blue Note Records founder Alfred Lion was indeed honored on Blue Train — Coltrane’s only collection of sides as a principal artist for the venerable label. The disc is packed solid with sonic evidence of Coltrane’s innate leadership abilities. He not only addresses the tunes at hand, but also simultaneously reinvents himself as a multifaceted interpreter of both hard bop as well as sensitive balladry — touching upon all forms in between. … Without reservation, Blue Train can easily be considered in and among the most important and influential entries not only of John Coltrane’s career, but of the entire genre of jazz music as well.

Beatles – Sgt. Pepper Japan red vinyl Apple LP with obi

beatles sgt. pepper japan red vinyl lp

Offered for sale is a red vinyl Japanese pressing of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles, including the original obi.

About this copy:  This copy of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is the second Japanese issue, released in late 1969.

Like the first version, the disc was pressed on  “Everclean” red vinyl, but was issued on the Apple label, rather than the Odeon label that was used for the 1967 first issue.

The second issue is actually harder to find on red vinyl than the first one.

The cover is M-.  This LP was issued without the cutout insert or lyric insert that were included in U.S. and UK copies.

The obi is VG+ , with a tiny tear at the bottom edge and a few wrinkles on the back.  The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached.

The original black paper inner sleeve is included and has no splits.

The red vinyl disc is M- and looks virtually unplayed.

A beautiful copy of a fairly scarce colored vinyl Beatles LP.  This is the first copy of this version that we’ve had in several years.

Background:  There’s not much point in writing about Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band; entire books have been written about the album.  It’s not only the best-known album of the Beatles’ catalog, but it’s regarded as one of the most influential albums ever released.

This LP, like nearly all Beatles albums issued in Japan in the 1960s, was pressed on both red and black vinyl, with the red vinyl pressings being more highly sought out by collectors.

Allmusic.com gave Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band a 5 star review:

With Revolver, the Beatles made the Great Leap Forward, reaching a previously unheard-of level of sophistication and fearless experimentation. Sgt. Pepper, in many ways, refines that breakthrough, as the Beatles consciously synthesized such disparate influences as psychedelia, art-song, classical music, rock & roll, and music hall, often in the course of one song. Not once does the diversity seem forced — the genius of the record is how the vaudevillian “When I’m 64” seems like a logical extension of “Within You Without You” and how it provides a gateway to the chiming guitars of “Lovely Rita.”… It’s possible to argue that there are better Beatles albums, yet no album is as historically important as this. After Sgt. Pepper, there were no rules to follow — rock and pop bands could try anything, for better or worse. Ironically, few tried to achieve the sweeping, all-encompassing embrace of music as the Beatles did here.

Peter, Paul & Mary – Peter, Paul & Mary autographed 1962 U.S. mono LP

Peter, Paul & Mary - Peter, Paul & Mary u.s. autographed lp

Offered for sale is an original U.S. mono pressing of Peter, Paul and Mary by Peter, Paul and Mary, autographed by all three members.

About this copy: This copy of Peter, Paul and Mary is a 1962 U.S. mono pressing on the gray Warner Brothers label.

This LP comes from our personal collection.  It was acquired in the mid-1980s from the estate of a former nightclub owner in Dallas, Texas.

This club frequently had popular jazz, blues and pop artists perform there, and the owner routinely had every artist sign a copy of their latest album for him.   Nearly every album in the collection was a new and virtually unplayed first pressing. We had quite a few pieces from this collection at one time, and kept a handful of titles for our own collection.

The owner’s name was Charles, and most of the autographs, including this one, were inscribed to him.

The cover is M- and looks like new.  There is a tiny dent in the upper left hand corner.

The back cover has been autographed in blue ballpoint pen.  Peter Yarrow has written “To Charles, Thanks From Peter Yarrow.”  Paul Stookey has signed his name below that, and Mary has signed her name below Paul’s as “Mary A. Travers.”

The original Warner inner sleeve is M- and has no splits.    The disc is M- and looks (and probably is) unplayed.  Beautiful disc!

An absolutely gorgeous fully autographed copy of one of the most important folk albums of the 1960s.

Background: Released in 1962, Peter, Paul and Mary was the debut LP by the folk trio of Peter, Paul and Mary.

The album reached #1 on the U.S. album chart and has long been an audiophile favorite.

Allmusic.com gave Peter, Paul and Mary a 4 star review:

The debut album by Peter, Paul & Mary is still one of the best albums to come out of the 1960s folk music revival. It’s a beautifully harmonized collection of the best songs that the group knew, stirring in its sensibilities and its haunting melodies as it crosses between folk, children’s songs, and even gospel… Peter, Paul & Mary, which hit the top spot on the album charts as part of a 185-week run, is the purest of the trio’s albums, laced with innocent good spirits and an optimism that remains infectious.

Pearl Jam – Vs. original 1993 Dutch LP

Pearl Jam - Vs. 1993 Dutch LP

Offered for sale is an original Dutch pressing of Vs. the second album by Pearl Jam.

Note: The album title does not appear on the cover or labels.  The labels simply say “Pearl Jam.”

About this copy: This copy of Vs. is 1993 pressing, pressed in the Netherlands for distribution throughout Europe.

The cover is M- and has a sticker that says “Pearl Jam.”  The custom inner sleeve is M- and has no splits.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nearly perfect copy of a rare Pearl Jam LP.

Background: Released in 1993, Vs. (untitled on some pressings) was the second album by Pearl Jam.

The album reached #1 on the U.S. charts and #2 on the UK charts.

Allmusic.com gave Vs. a 4 star review:

Vs. is often Eddie Vedder at his most strident, both lyrically and vocally. It’s less oblique than Ten in its topicality, and sometimes downright dogmatic; having the world’s ear renders Vedder unable to resist a few simplistic potshots at favorite white-liberal targets. Yet a little self-righteousness is an acceptable price to pay for the passionate immediacy that permeates Vs. It’s a much rawer, looser record than Ten, feeling like a live performance; Vedder practically screams himself hoarse on a few songs…. Vs. may not reach the majestic heights of Ten, but at least half the record stands with Pearl Jam’s best work.

Metallica – Kill ‘Em All 2008 U.S. 45 RPM half speed mastered 2 LP set

Metallica - Kill 'Em All U.S. 45 RPM half speed mastered LP

Offered for sale is a copy of the 2008 U.S. limited edition half speed mastered 45 RPM 2 LP pressing of Kill “Em All by Metallica.

About this copy: This copy of Kill ‘Em All is a 2008 U.S. pressing on the Warner Brothers label.

The cover is M-.  The outer bag and hype sticker is included.  The “Louder Faster Heavier” obi-style banner is included (not shown) and is M-.

The 180 gram 45 RPM discs are M- and look unplayed.  Clean discs!

A nice copy of a great-sounding LP.

Background: Starting in 2008, Metallica released their entire catalog in the form of limited edition, high quality, half speed mastered 180 gram pressings.

These were issued at both 33 1/3 speed and also at 45 RPM for better sound quality.

Kill ‘Em All, released in 1983, was the first album by Metallica.  It sold poorly on original release, but eventually reached #66 on the U.S. charts after the success of their Master of Puppets LP.

It remains one of the most influential heavy metal albums of all time.

Allmusic.com gave Kill ‘Em All a rare 5 star review:

The true birth of thrash. On Kill ‘Em All, Metallica fuses the intricate riffing of New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Diamond Head with the velocity of Motörhead and hardcore punk. James Hetfield’s highly technical rhythm guitar style drives most of the album, setting new standards of power, precision, and stamina. But really, the rest of the band is just as dexterous, playing with tightly controlled fury even at the most ridiculously fast tempos. … Frightening, awe-inspiring, and absolutely relentless, Kill ‘Em All is pure destructive power, executed with jaw-dropping levels of scientific precision.

This LP is a stock copy with “SAMPLE” rubber-stamped on the side two label in Japanese.

About this copy: This copy of Stillness is a 1970 Japanese pressing on the A&M label.

The gatefold cover is VG++ with slight general wear.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is VG++ and close to M- on side one, with a light inaudible mark through the first track.  Side two is M-.

A nice copy of a terrific album that’s hard to find complete.

Background: Released in 1970, Stillness was the seventh and final album by Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66.

Allmusic.com gave Stillness a 4 star review:

Stillness is a concept album — the title tune opens and closes it in moody stillness — and a transition piece all at once, for Sergio Mendes seemed to be searching for a viable way out of the Brasil ’66 formula. Indeed, “Righteous Life,” using a different L.A. rhythm section, is really a folk-rock record, a good one, and a far cry from the bossa-propelled ’60s. … Overlooked in its day, Stillness is the great sleeper album of Sergio Mendes’ first A&M period.

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - Ye-Me-Le Japan LP

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of  Ye-Me-Le by Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Ye-Me-Le is a 1969 Japanese pressing on the A&M label.

The cover is VG++, with slight general wear.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M- on side one and VG++ on side two with a couple of light scuffs.  It’s a clean disc that has had little play.

A nice copy of a fairly scarce (and quite good) Sergio Mendes LP.

Background: Released in 1969, Ye-Me-Le was the sixth album by Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66.

Allmusic.com gave Ye-Me-Le a 3 star review:

Perhaps the Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 sound was at last beginning to show signs of wear, for not only didn’t Ye-Me-Le produce any hits (“Wichita Lineman” reached a lowly number 95), but the album is also less enterprising and fresh-sounding than its predecessors. …But there are special moments, like the hypnotic “Masquerade” (no relation to the Leon Russell/George Benson hit), Sergio Mihanovich’s haunting “Some Time Ago,” and another winning treatment of a Beatles tune, “Norwegian Wood,” where Mendes cuts loose a killer solo on electric piano.

Metallica – Ride the Lightning U.S. half speed mastered 45 RPM 2 LP set

metallica - ride the lightning u.s. 45 rpm lp

Offered for sale is a copy of the  limited edition half speed mastered 2 LP edition of Ride the Lightning by Metallica.

This version was cut at 45 RPM and pressed on 180 gram vinyl for optimal sound quality.

About this copy: This copy of Ride the Lightning is a 2008 pressing on the Warner Brothers label.

The cover is VG+, with slight wear on the corners and a small 2″ (5 cm) split at the top edge.

The outer bag and hype sticker is included.  The “Louder Faster Heavier” obi-style banner is included (not shown) and is M-.

The 180 gram 45 RPM discs are M- and look unplayed.  Clean discs!

A nice copy of a great-sounding LP.

Background: Starting in 2008, Warner Brothers Records reissued the entire Metallica catalog as a series of high-quality “audiophile” pressings, with each title pressed on 180 gram vinyl, and cut at 45 RPM using Mobile Fidelity’s half speed mastering technology.

The resulting LPs sounded great, but were a bit expensive and didn’t stay in print very long and are all hard to find today.

Released in 1984, Ride the Lightning was the second album by Metallica.  While the album peaked at #48 on the U.S. album charts, the album has since sold more than six million copies.

Allmusic.com gave Ride the Lightning a 5 star review:

Kill ‘Em All may have revitalized heavy metal’s underground, but Ride the Lightning was even more stunning, exhibiting staggering musical growth and boldly charting new directions that would affect heavy metal for years to come. Incredibly ambitious for a one-year-later sophomore effort, Ride the Lightning finds Metallica aggressively expanding their compositional technique and range of expression. Every track tries something new, and every musical experiment succeeds mightily. … Basically, in a nutshell, Metallica sounded like they could do anything. Heavy metal hadn’t seen this kind of ambition since Judas Priest’s late-’70s classics, and Ride the Lightning effectively rewrote the rule book for a generation of thrashers. If Kill ‘Em All was the manifesto, Ride the Lightning was the revolution itself.

Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 – Live at the Expo ’70 Japan LP with obi

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - Live at the Expo '70 Japan LP

Offered for sale is a copy of the live album Live at the Expo ’70 by Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66, including the original obi.

This 1970 live album was released only in Japan.

About this copy: This copy of Live at the Expo ’70 is a 1970 Japanese pressing on the A&M label.

The gatefold cover is M- on the outside, and VG++ on the inside, with slight foxing.  The obi is M-.

This LP was issued without an insert, as there’s a photo/lyric foldout on the inside of the gatefold cover.

The disc is VG+, with a few light scuffs.  It’s a clean disc that has had little play.

A nice copy of an album that’s surprisingly hard to find in nice condition.  Good record, too!

Background: Released in late 1970, Live at the Expo ’70 offers a live recording of Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 recorded  on April 5, 1970 at the Theater Expo in Osaka.

Tracks are:

  • What The World Needs Now / Pretty World
  • Goin’ Out Of My Head
  • Pra Dizer Adeus (To Say Goodbye)
  • (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay
  • Daytripper
  • Fool On The Hill
  • Scarborough Fair
  • Norwegian Wood
  • Mas Que Nada

Allmusic.com gave Live at the Expo ’70 a 3 1/2 star review:

This live album from the prime of Sergio Mendes and his “classic” Brasil ’66 lineup was released for the Japanese market only (and)… there is much to be said for this once-difficult-to-get release. It’s an honest record, catching the sextet au naturel without the backing orchestrations of the studio records, no longer at the mercy of the airplay stopwatch and ready to groove. It’s a rare chance to hear Mendes stretch out at some length on acoustic grand piano during this period, revealing that his roots as a player were and are more attuned to mainstream American jazz than strictly Brazilian idioms. The arrangements sometimes follow the contours of the studio versions for awhile, then veer away for some serious, extended jamming.
