R.E.M. – Green 1988 U.S. LP

rem - green u.s. lp

Offered for sale is an original U.S. pressing of Green by R.E.M. .

About this copy: This copy of Green is a 1988 U.S. pressing on the Warner Brothers label.

The cover is M-.  The custom inner sleeve is VG, with no wear or wrinkles, but it does have splits on three sides.

The disc is VG++ with a couple of light sleeve scuffs.  It’s a clean disc that has had little play.

A nice copy of a scarce R.E.M. LP, as most buyers purchased a compact disc or cassette when the album was new.

Background: Released in 1988, Green was the sixth album by R.E.M. .

The album reached #12 on the U.S. album chart and #27 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave Green a 3 1/2 star review:

As far as major-label debuts by underground bands go, Green is fairly uncompromising. While it displays a more powerful guitar sound on “Get Up,” “Turn You Inside Out,” and “Orange Crush,” it also takes more detours than Document, whether it’s the bizarrely affecting contemporary folk of “The Wrong Child” and “You Are the Everything,” the bubblegum of “Stand” and “Pop Song 89,” or the introspection of the lovely “Hairshirt” and “World Leader Pretend.” …Nevertheless, half of the record is brilliant, and it certainly indicates that R.E.M. are continuing to diversify their sound.

A nice copy of a scarce Porcupine Tree set.

Background: Voyage 34 was recorded in the early 1990s, and the track was recorded for their Up the Downstair album but was instead released (in edited form) as a single.

In 2010, Kscope released an expanded version as a 2 LP set, pressed on white vinyl.

Allmusic.com gave Voyage 34 this review:

Voyage 34, originally a two-volume EP series from 1992-1993, was expanded into “The Complete Trip” after Steven Wilson remixed and added production for its eventual re-release seven years later. Documenting the ill effects of an acid trip by a frequent user (the first 33 were fine), the four-phase work begins with a straight-laced narrator explaining the events leading up to the trip, with straight-ahead (though slightly exploratory) guitar work by Wilson over a mid-tempo drum section.

Alan Parsons Project – Eve Japan LP with obi

Alan Parsons Project - Eve Japan LP

About this copy: This copy of Eve is an original 1979 Japanese pressing on the Arista label.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M- and may be unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce Alan Parsons LP.

Background: Released in 1979, Eve was the fourth album by the Alan Parsons Project.

The album reached #13 on the U.S. album chart and #74 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave Eve a 4 star review:

For the most part, 1979’s Eve is somewhat overlooked as being one of the Alan Parsons Project’s finest work, when in fact it involves some of this group’s most intricate songs. The album’s concept deals with the female’s overpowering effect on man. Each song touches on her ability to dissect the male ego, especially through sexual means, originating with Eve’s tempting Adam in the beginning of time. Not only does this idea gain strength as the album progresses, but a musical battle of the sexes begins to arise through each song. …Somehow, Eve is dismissed as one of this band’s greatest efforts, when in fact it’s one of their finest marriages of both concept and music.

Alan Parsons Project – Pyramid Japan LP with obi

Alan Parsons Project - Pyramid Japan LP

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Pyramid by the Alan Parsons Project, complete with original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Pyramid is a 1979 Japanese second issue of an LP that was originally released in 1978.

The cover is VG+, with light general wear, mostly at the top and bottom edge.  The obi is VG, with a couple of wrinkles and repaired tears at the top and bottom edge.

The insert is M-.  The disc is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific (and great sounding) LP.

Background: Released in 1978, Pyramid was the third album by the Alan Parsons Project.  The LP reached #26 on the U.S. charts.  The album’s only charting single was “What Goes Up,” which reached #87 on the U.S. singles chart.

Allmusic.com gave Pyramid a 3 star review:

Even with six different vocalists lending their talents to the album, Pyramid still remains an average bit of material from the Alan Parsons Project. Not only does the album’s theme evolve around the mystique of the pyramid, but it also touches on man’s fascination with superstition and its powers. The instrumental “Voyager” opens things up, and its provocative style sets the tone for the album’s supernatural mood….While not a stellar album, Pyramid completes the task of musically explaining its concept. Its short but slightly compelling nature grows after a few listens, but the album itself isn’t a necessity.

Porcupine Tree – The Incident 2009 Dutch 2 LP set

porcupine tree - the incident netherlands LP

Offered for sale is an original Netherlands 180 gram pressing of the double album The Incident by Porcupine Tree.

About this copy: This copy of The Incident is a 2009 Dutch pressing on the Tonefloat label.

This is the standard edition of the LP, and not the numbered, limited edition.

The cover is M-.  The custom inner sleeves are M-.  The two 180 gram discs are M- and look unplayed. Clean discs!

A beautiful copy of a terrific LP.

Background: Released in 2009, The Incident was the final studio album by Porcupine Tree.  The album was the band’s highest charting album ever, reaching #23 in the UK and #25 in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave The Incident a 3 1/2 star review:

Set up similarly to Rush’s 1978 classic, Hemispheres, The Incident is comprised of a single long song — the title track — that features many different movements (which would have taken up the entire side one back in the good ol’ days of vinyl), as well as a handful of shorter compositions that close the album. The aforementioned title track will certainly be the talk of the album, as it manages to incorporate bombast and melody (the sixth movement, which shares the album’s title), rock (“Octane Twisted”), Yes’ folky moments (“The Seance”), and Tool-like grooves (“Circle of Manias”), before it all gently floats away on a cloud of fairy dust (“I Drive the Hearse”). That said, unlike early proggers who favored meandering instrumental doodling over succinct songwriting, Porcupine Tree always favor the importance of memorable songs over flashy solos, which certainly makes the group one of the top modern-day prog rock bands.

LaVern Baker – LaVern Baker Sings Bessie Smith sealed U.S. mono LP

LaVern Baker Sings Bessie Smith u.s. mono lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. mono copy of LaVern Baker Sings Bessie Smith by LaVern Baker.

About this copy: This copy of LaVern Baker Sings Bessie Smith is a sealed U.S. mono pressing on the Atlantic label of an album that was originally released in 1958.

The original issue was on a black Atlantic label and was wrapped in a loose bag.  As this copy is in shrink wrap, it’s likely on the mid-1960s red and purple Atlantic label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact except for a 3″ (8 cm) break at the top center of the cover.  The cover has split there.

There is a punch hole in the lower right hand corner of the cover and an original price sticker attached to the wrap.

A nice copy of an album that’s usually found in poor condition.

Background: Released in 1958, LaVern Baker Sings Bessie Smith was the third album by American R&B singer LaVern Baker.

Allmusic.com gave LaVern Baker Sings Bessie Smith a 4 1/2 star review:

This is an album that should not have worked. LaVern Baker (a fine R&B singer) was joined by all-stars from mainstream jazz (including trumpeter Buck Clayton, trombonist Vic Dickenson, tenor-saxophonist Paul Quinichette and pianist Nat Pierce) for twelve songs associated with the great ’20s blues singer Bessie Smith. Despite the potentially conflicting styles, this project is quite successful and often exciting.

Background:Released in 1976, Tales of Mystery and Imagination: Edgar Allan Poe was the debut LP by the Alan Parsons Project.

The album reached #38 on the U.S. charts and #56 in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Tales of Mystery and Imagination: Edgar Allan Poe a 4 1/2 star review:

Tales of Mystery and Imagination is an extremely mesmerizing aural journey through some of Edgar Allan Poe’s most renowned works. With the use of synthesizers, drums, guitar, and even a glockenspiel, Parsons’ shivering effects make way for an eerie excursion into Poe’s well-known classics. … With vocalists Terry Sylvester, John Miles, and Eric Woolfson stretched across each track, this variety of different singing styles adds color and design to the album’s air. Without any underlying theme to be pondered upon, Alan Parsons instead paints a vivid picture of one of the most alluring literary figures in history by musically reciting his most famous works in expert fashion.

Lou Reed – Rock n Roll Animal original UK LP

Lou Reed - Rock n Roll Animal UK LP

Offered for sale is an original UK pressing of Rock n Roll Animal by Lou Reed.

About this copy: This copy of Rock n Roll Animal is a 1974 UK pressing on the orange RCA label.

The cover is VG, with a moderate edge wear and a repaired 3″ (8 cm) split at the top edge.

The disc is VG++ and close to M- with a couple of faint sleeve scuffs.  It’s a clean disc that has had little play.

A nice copy of a legendary live album, and the best pressing we’ve heard of this LP.

Background:  Released in 1974, Rock n Roll Animal was the first live album by Lou Reed.

The album reached #26 on the UK chart and #45 on the U.S. chart.

Allmusic.com gave Rock n Roll Animal a 4 star review:

In 1974, after the commercial disaster of his album Berlin, Lou Reed needed a hit, and Rock N’ Roll Animal was a rare display of commercial acumen on his part, just the right album at just the right time. Recorded in concert with Reed’s crack road band at the peak of their form, Rock N’ Roll Animal offered a set of his most anthemic songs (most dating from his days with the Velvet Underground) in arrangements that presented his lean, effective melodies and street-level lyrics in their most user-friendly form (or at least as user friendly as an album with a song called “Heroin” can get). …Reed would rarely sound this commercial again, but Rock N’ Roll Animal proves he could please a crowd when he had to.

Lou Reed – New York 1989 German LP

lou reed - new york german lp

Offered for sale is an original 1989 German pressing of New York by Lou Reed.

This title was pressed in Germany for distribution throughout Europe.

About this copy: This copy of New York is a 1989 German pressing on the Sire label.

The cover is M-.  The custom inner sleeve is M-.  The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a well-recorded LP.

Background: Released in 1989, New York was the fourteenth solo album by Lou Reed.

The album reached #14 on the UK album charts and #40 on the U.S. charts.

Allmusic.com gave New York a 5 star review:

If the city of New York didn’t exist, Lou Reed would have had to invent it in order to create a suitable environment for himself, a place where high art and street-level rock & roll stand side by side. New York figured so prominently in Reed’s music, it’s surprising it took him until 1989 to make an album simply called New York, a set of 14 scenes and sketches from the city that was his spiritual home. As a songwriter, New York is the strongest and best-realized set of songs in Reed’s solo catalog; while his superb 1982 comeback The Blue Mask sometimes found him reaching for his effects, New York’s accumulated details and deftly drawn caricatures hit bull’s-eye after bull’s-eye for 57 minutes, all with an easy stride and striking lyrical facility….. Produced with subtle intelligence and a welcome absence of flash, New York is a masterpiece of literate, adult rock & roll, and the finest album of Lou Reed’s solo career.
