Various (Zombies, Procol Harum, Tinkerbell’s Fairydust) – The World of Hits Japan LP with obi

The World of Hits Japan LP

Offered for sale is a copy of the 1969 Japan-only compilation album The World of Hits, including the original obi and lyric insert.

Along with tracks by the Zombies, Them, Procol Harum, and others, this album includes a track from the UK band Tinkerbell’s Fairydust, whose only album was canceled shortly before release.

About this copy: This copy of The World of Hits is a 1969 Japanese pressing on the London label.

The cover is VG- with a lot of foxing on the back and a 7″ (10 cm) repaired split at the top edge and a 9″ (22 cm) repaired slit at the spine.  Aside from the repaired splits, the cover presents well.

The obi is VG, with quite a bit of foxing and repaired tears at the top and bottom edges.

The disc is VG++ and close to M- on side one, with a number of spindle marks on the label.  Side two is VG+ with a couple of light scuffs.  It’s a clean disc that has been well cared for.

A nice, if imperfect, copy of a very rare LP and the only copy we’ve ever seen.  This album is not listed on Discogs.

Background: Released only in Japan in 1969, The World of Hits is a collection of tracks by various British artists of the 1960s.

The highlight is “Twenty Ten” by Tinkerbell’s Fairydust, a British band whose only album was canceled shortly before release.  Test pressings of the unreleased album sell for thousands of dollars.

The album also includes tracks by Them, Lulu, the Zombies, Procol Harum, Los Bravos, and the Nashville Teens.

Tracks are:

  • Procol Harum -= A Whiter Shade of Pale
  • Tinkerbell’s Fairydust – Twenty Ten
  • The Bachelors – The Sound of Silence
  • Bobbie and Vera – I Know That He Knows
  • The Nashville Teens – Tobacco Road
  • Los Bravos – Black is Black
  • Pinky & the Fellas – Manchester & Liverpool
  • The Zombies – I Love You
  • Neil MacArthur – She’s Not There
  • Lulu – Shout
  • Amen Corner – Bend Me, Shape Me
  • Them – Gloria

Police – Outlandos D’Amour Canada half speed mastered audiophile LP

Police - Outlandos D'Amour Canada half speed mastered LP

Offered for sale is a limited edition Canadian half speed mastered audiophile pressing of Outlandos D’Amour, the debut LP by the Police.

This release was part of A&M Canada’s short-lived Audiophile Series of half speed mastered albums.

About this copy: This copy of Outlandos D’Amour is a 1979 Canadian pressing on the A&M label.

While this is technically a Canadian issue, the disc was pressed in Japan by JVC using their proprietary “Supervinyl” compound.

The cover is VG++ with a slight edge wear and a break in the lamination near the upper right hand corner where a price sticker was removed.

The half speed mastered disc is M- with a few spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce Police LP.

Background: Released in 1978, Outlandos D’Amour was the first album by the Police.

The album reached #6 on the UK album chart and #23 on the U.S. chart.

Allmusic.com gave Outlandos D’Amour a 4 1/2 star review:

While their subsequent chart-topping albums would contain far more ambitious songwriting and musicianship, the Police’s 1978 debut, Outlandos d’Amour (translation: Outlaws of Love) is by far their most direct and straightforward release. Although Sting, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland were all superb instrumentalists with jazz backgrounds, it was much easier to get a record contract in late-’70s England if you were a punk/new wave artist, so the band decided to mask their instrumental prowess with a set of strong, adrenaline-charged rock, albeit with a reggae tinge. …Outlandos d’Amour is unquestionably one of the finest debuts to come out of the ’70s punk/new wave movement.

Pink Floyd – The Wall 1979 Japan 2 LP set with obi

Pink Floyd - The Wall Japan LP

Offered for sale is an original 2 LP Japanese issue of Pink Floyd’s The Wall, including the original “cap” obi and all inserts.

About this copy: The copy offered for sale is a 1979 Japanese pressing on the CBS Sony label.

The cover is M-.  The “cap” obi is M-.   The original shrink wrap (torn) is included and the clear title sticker is still attached to the wrap.

The lyric insert and custom inner sleeves are M-.  There is no foxing on the cover or sleeves.

The two discs are M- and look unplayed.  Clean discs!

A nice copy of a classic LP and the nicest used copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: Pink Floyd’s 1979 double album The Wall alienated a few fans and made the band a bunch of new ones.  Regardless of opinion, the album sold in the millions and is highly regarded by audiophiles as being among the best-sounding albums in the band’s catalog.

The long-out-of-print Japanese pressing is generally regarded as the best, and has been on the Absolute Sound’s recommended list for decades.

Allmusic.com gave The Wall a 4 1/2 star review:

The Wall was Roger Waters’ crowning accomplishment in Pink Floyd. It documented the rise and fall of a rock star (named Pink Floyd), based on Waters’ own experiences and the tendencies he’d observed in people around him. By then, the bassist had firm control of the group’s direction, working mostly alongside David Gilmour and bringing in producer Bob Ezrin as an outside collaborator. Drummer Nick Mason was barely involved, while keyboardist Rick Wright seemed to be completely out of the picture. Still, The Wall was a mighty, sprawling affair, featuring 26 songs with vocals: nearly as many as all previous Floyd albums combined.

Fleetwood Mac – Rumours sealed limited edition 2011 U.S. 45 RPM 2 LP set

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours sealed U.S. 45 RPM LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed copy of the U.S. limited edition, 45 RPM 2 LP pressing of Rumours by Fleetwood Mac.

Note: This is the limited edition 2011 U.S. pressing, and not the recent European one, which reportedly doesn’t sound as good.

About this copy: This copy of Rumours is an original 2011 U.S. pressing on the Warner Brothers label of an album that was originally released in 1977.

This highly-regarded audiophile pressing was issued in 2011 and was limited to 5000 copies, pressed on 180 gram vinyl and cut at 45 RPM for better fidelity.

As the album is still sealed, the records are presumably new and unplayed.

The loose bag is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.  The perforated tear-off strip is fully intact.  The words “Made in U.S.A.” appear in the lower right hand corner of the back cover; the more common pressing says “Manufactured in the E.U.”

There is a hype sticker on the cover that lists a few song titles, and says, “2 DISCS 45 RPM Pressed at Pallas.”

A beautiful copy of a rare Fleetwood Mac LP.

Background:  This limited edition pressing of Rumours was first pressed as a test pressing in 2006, but for some reason, it wasn’t commercially released until 2011.

The U.S. pressings were pressed at Pallas, a highly-regarded German pressing plant, and were limited to 5000 copies.  These were issued in a loose-fitting plastic bag and have covers that say, “Made in U.S.A.” on the back by the UPC.

There is another pressing from Europe that looks very similar.  That one was issued on tight-fitting shrink wrap and say, “Made in the EU” on the back cover.

While we cannot confirm this, the EU copies were reportedly not sourced from the same tape and are said to not sound as good as the U.S. issue, which is generally regarded as the best-sounding pressing of Rumours ever issued on vinyl.

More on the two pressings here.  (New window)

Released in 1977, Rumours was the album that turned Fleetwood Mac into superstars.  The album reached #1 in the U.S. and in the UK and has sold more than twenty million copies in the U.S. alone.

Allmusic.com gave Rumours a 5 star review:

Rumours is the kind of album that transcends its origins and reputation, entering the realm of legend — it’s an album that simply exists outside of criticism and outside of its time, even if it thoroughly captures its era. Prior to this LP, Fleetwood Mac were moderately successful, but here they turned into a full-fledged phenomenon, with Rumours becoming the biggest-selling pop album to date. While its chart success was historic, much of the legend surrounding the record is born from the group’s internal turmoil. Unlike most bands, Fleetwood Mac in the mid-’70s were professionally and romantically intertwined, with no less than two couples in the band, but as their professional career took off, the personal side unraveled.

Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon original U.S. Mobile Fidelity LP

Offered for sale is an original U.S. half speed mastered pressing of The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, released by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs.

This is the 1979 first issue of the LP with the non-slanted text “Original Master Recording” at the top of the front cover.

About this copy: This copy of The Dark Side of the Moon is a 1979 U.S. pressing on the Mobile Fidelity label of an album that was originally released in 1973.  While technically a U.S. release, the disc was pressed in Japan by JVC using their proprietary “Supervinyl” compound.

The cover is M- with trace corner wear.  There are no splits.    The posterboard stiffener and two inserts are M-.

The disc is M- with a couple of foxing spots on the labels, but no spindle marks and no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a Pink Floyd LP that is often found with major cover wear.

Background:  The Dark Side of the Moon was Pink Floyd’s eighth album and it’s the one that made them superstars.  Reaching #1 in the U.S. and #2 in the UK, the album is one of the biggest selling albums in history.

While the album topped the U.S. charts for only one week, it spent 741 weeks in the U.S. top 200 – fifteen years.

Allmusic.com gave The Dark Side of the Moon a rare 5 star review:

By condensing the sonic explorations of Meddle to actual songs and adding a lush, immaculate production to their trippiest instrumental sections, Pink Floyd inadvertently designed their commercial breakthrough with Dark Side of the Moon. …Pink Floyd may have better albums than Dark Side of the Moon, but no other record defines them quite as well as this one.

Santana – Spirits Dancing In The Flesh 1990 U.S. LP

Santana – Spirits Dancing In The Flesh 1990 U.S. LP

Offered for sale is an original 1990 U.S. pressing of Spirits Dancing in the Flesh by Santana.

About this copy: This copy of Spirits Dancing in the Flesh is a 1990 U.S. pressing on the Columbia label.

The cover is M-.  The custom inner sleeve is M-.

The disc is VG++ and close to M- with a couple of light sleeve scuffs.  It’s a clean disc that has had little play.

A nice copy of an album that’s quite hard to find on vinyl.

Background: Released in 1990, Spirits Dancing in the Flesh was the sixteenth studio album by Santana.

The album reached #85 on the U.S. album chart and #68 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave Spirits Dancing in the Flesh a 3 star review:

Following a 1989 20th anniversary reunion tour to promote Viva Santana!, Carlos Santana reorganized the band as a sextet consisting of himself, singer/guitarist Alex Ligertwood, singer/keyboardist Chester Thompson, bass player Benny Rietveld, drummer Walfredo Reyes and percussionist Armando Peraza. This unit, with such guest stars as Vernon Reid (of Living Colour), Wayne Shorter, and Bobby Womack, recorded Spirits Dancing In The Flesh, Santana’s 15th and final studio album for Columbia Records. … For all those influences, it was more of a straightforward, guitar-heavy rock album than usual. Coming more than three years after Santana’s last new album, Freedom, it sold to the band’s core audience only, reaching #85.

Rush – Counterparts 1993 German LP

Rush - Counterparts 1993 German LP

Offered for sale is an original German pressing of Counterparts by Rush.

When first released, this album was not sold on vinyl in the United States.

About this copy: This copy of Counterparts is a 1993 German pressing on the Atlantic label.

The cover is M- and is still in the original shrink wrap.  The custom inner sleeve is M- and has no splits.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of one of Rush’s rarest albums.

Background: Released in 1993, Counterparts was the fifteenth album by Rush.

The album reached #2 on the U.S. album charts and #14 on the UK album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Counterparts a 3 1/2 star review:

By 1993, alternative rock had arrived in a big way, and surprisingly, Canadian veterans Rush were game, releasing their most honest and organic rock & roll record in over a decade with Counterparts. Opener “Animate” is straightforward enough, but doesn’t even hint at the guitar ferocity and lyrical angst of “Stick it Out,” a song which undoubtedly polarizes Rush fans to this day. … Pure hard rock resurfaces on “Cold Fire,” but it is the largely acoustic “Nobody’s Hero” which provides the album’s most gripping moment with an impassioned plea for HIV consciousness and understanding.

Offered for sale is an original German pressing of Roll the Bones by Rush.

When first issued, this album was not released on vinyl in the United States.

About this copy:  This copy of Roll the Bones is a 1991 German pressing on the Atlantic label.

The cover is M- and is still in the original shrink wrap.  The custom inner sleeve is M-.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a very rare Rush LP.

Background: Released in 1991, Roll the Bones was the fourteenth album by Rush.

The album reached #3 on the U.S. album chart and #10 on the UK album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Roll the Bones a 3 star review:

From a lyrical perspective, 1991’s Roll the Bones is quite possibly Rush’s darkest album (most of the songs deal with death in no uncertain terms), but from a musical point of view, the record treads territory (highbrow melodic hard rock) similar to its recent predecessors, with only a few surprises thrown in for good measure.

Pink Floyd – Atom Heart Mother red vinyl Japan LP with obi

Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother red vinyl Japan LP

Offered for sale is an original red vinyl Japanese pressing of Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd, including the original obi.

About this copy:  This copy of Atom Heart Mother is a 1970 Japanese pressing on the Odeon label, pressed on “Everclean” red vinyl.

The cover is  M-.  The obi is VG++ with slight wear at the bottom edge, but no tears.  The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached.

The second “tour” obi is VG++ with a repaired tear at the bottom edge.

The insert booklet is M-.

The red vinyl disc is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, and a very faint hairline on side two.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of an album that’s hard to find complete on red vinyl and the nicest copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background:  Released in 1970, Atom Heart Mother was the fifth album by Pink Floyd.

The album reached #1 on the UK charts, but peaked at #55 on the U.S. charts, making it what was then the highest-ever charting album in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave Atom Heart Mother a 3 star review:

Appearing after the sprawling, unfocused double-album set Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother may boast more focus, even a concept, yet that doesn’t mean it’s more accessible. If anything, this is the most impenetrable album Pink Floyd released while on Harvest, which also makes it one of the most interesting of the era. Still, it may be an acquired taste even for fans, especially since it kicks off with a side-long, 23-minute extended orchestral piece that may not seem to head anywhere, but is often intriguing, more in what it suggests than what it achieves.

In Japan, the first pressing of Atom Heart Mother was pressed on red “Everclean” vinyl and while it’s the most common Pink Floyd title to find on red wax, it’s still quite difficult to find one in playable condition and even harder to find with the original obi.  Most of the copies of Atom Heart Mother we’ve seen from Japan over the years were in poor condition.
