Jimi Hendrix – Smash Hits 1969 Japan LP with obi and Japan-only cover

jimi hendrix smash hits 1969 japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of Smash Hits by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, with the original obi and a Japan-only cover.

This LP has a different track listing from the U.S. version of the album.

About this copy: This copy of Smash Hits is a 1969 Japanese pressing on the Polydor label.  Shortly after the album’s original release, the catalog number changed from SMP-1413 to MP-1413.  This is the original issue.

The unique-to-Japan cover is VG++ with slight edge and corner wear.  The obi is VG+ with a few minor wrinkles; the “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached but is partially torn off.  The insert is M-.

The disc is VG++ and close to M- with a few spindle marks on the labels and a couple of very faint sleeve scuffs on each side.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a rare Hendrix LP and the only copy of the original issue we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: You might think that while record companies sometimes disagreed about how to format an album in one country or another, they’d at least agree as to what constitutes a “hit.”  Not so with Smash Hits, the compilation LP released in 1968 in Britain and 1969 elsewhere, featuring the best of Jimi Hendrix.  The US and UK versions of the album each had four songs that weren’t included on the other country’s version of the album.

The copy offered for sale is an original Japanese issue of the album, catalog number SMP-1413, manufactured by Nippon Grammophon and including the original obi and cover art, which was unique to the Japanese issue.  Later issues used the same cover art as the UK and US issues.

The Japanese issue has the UK track lineup, which includes a couple of rare B-sides:

Purple Haze – 2:52
Fire – 2:45
The Wind Cries Mary – 3:20
Can You See Me – 2:33
51st Anniversary – 3:16
Hey Joe  – 3:30
Stone Free – 3:36
The Stars That Play with Laughing Sam’s Dice – 4:21
Manic Depression – 3:42
Highway Chile – 3:32
Burning of the Midnight Lamp – 3:39
Foxy Lady – 3:18

Jimi Hendrix – Axis: Bold as Love original 1968 U.S. stereo LP

jimi hendrix - Axis bold as love u.s. tri-color stereo LP

Offered for sale is an original stereo U.S. pressing of Axis: Bold as Love by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, on the tri-color Reprise label.

The tri-color label was only used for a few months after the album’s January 1968 release and was replaced by the orange/brown “two-tone” label.

About this copy:  This copy of Axis: Bold as Love is a 1968 U.S. stereo pressing on the tri-color Reprise label.

The cover is VG+, with slight general wear, mostly on the front.  The inside of the cover has a matte (non-glossy) finish.

The original Reprise inner sleeve is included and has a small split on the bottom edge.

The disc is VG++ and close to M- with a couple of very faint hairlines and a few spindle marks on the labels.  We can’t determine the pressing plant, as it doesn’t match any listed at discogs.  It’s a clean disc that has only been played a few times.  There’s a bit of surface noise in between tracks.

A nice copy of an album that’s hard to find as a clean first pressing.

Background: Axis: Bold as Love, released in December, 1967, was the second album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience.  The album reached #2 on the UK charts and #5 in the U.S., where it has since been certified 5 times platinum by the RIAA.

The album was originally released on the three-color Reprise label, but that label was changed to a two-color label not long after the album’s original release date.

Allmusic.com gave Axis: Bold as Love a 5 star review:

Jimi Hendrix’s second album followed up his groundbreaking debut effort with a solid collection of great tunes and great interactive playing between himself, Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, and the recording studio itself. Wisely retaining manager Chas Chandler to produce the album and Eddie Kramer as engineer, Hendrix stretched further musically than the first album, but even more so as a songwriter.

It’s our favorite Hendrix album, and it’s also the best-sounding of the three albums he released in his lifetime.

Jimi Hendrix – Hendrix Live at the L.A. Forum 1977 U.S. blue/orange splatter vinyl 2 LP live album

Jimi Hendrix - Hendrix Live at the L.A. Forum u.s. color vinyl lp

Offered for sale is a copy of the double live album Live at the L.A. Forum Jimi Hendrix, pressed on colored vinyl with one blue splatter vinyl disc and one orange splatter vinyl disc.

About this copy: This copy of Hendrix Alive is a 1977 U.S. pressing on the Mushroom Records label of an album that was originally released in 1970 on the Rubber Dubber label.

The cover is a generic white cover, and is M- and is still in the original shrink wrap.  There is a small tear in the wrap near the upper right hand corner.  The original insert is M-.

One disc is blue splatter vinyl with some white and black mixed in; the other disc is yellow, green and orange splatter vinyl.  Both discs have blank white labels.

The discs are M- with a few spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean discs!

These discs used the same stampers as the Ruthless Rhymes pressing, which had JH-1, JH-2, JH-3 and JH-4 in the dead wax.  This pressing has those numbers scratched out and replaced with 2802A, 2802B, 2802C, and 2802D.

A beautiful copy of one of the most sought-after Jimi Hendrix live albums.

Background: Recorded in 1970 and released a number of times on various labels, and under various titles, Live at the L.A. Forum (also known as Hendrix Alive) is a concert recording of Hendrix performing at the Los Angeles Forum on April 25, 1970.

This album was reissued in 1976-1978 by several different labels that were reportedly operated by the same people: Idle Mind Records, Mushroom Records and Ruthless Rhymes records.  We believe the Ruthless Rhymes pressing came first, with the Mushroom pressing following shortly thereafter.

While the sound quality isn’t the best, the album is highly regarded as the performance is considered to be one of Hendrix’s best live shows.

Track titles are:

  • Spanish Castle Magic
  • Foxy Lady
  • Getting Your Brothers Shoes Together
  • Getting My Heart Back Together Again
  • Message to Love
  • Ezy Rider
  • Machine Gun
  • Room Full of Mirrors

Jimi Hendrix – Electric Ladyland 1980 Japan 2 LP set with obi and nude cover

About this copy: This copy of Electric Ladyland is a 1980 Japanese issue of an album that was originally issued in 1968.

The cover is VG+ with slight edge and corner wear.

The pink obi is VG++ with a couple of minor foxing spots on the back, but no tears.  The lyric insert is M-.

The discs are M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean discs!

A nice copy of a classic LP, as this cover is notoriously prone to wear.

Background: Released in 1968, Electric Ladyland was the third album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the final studio album to be released in Hendrix’ lifetime.

The album was released in most countries with a cover depicting a number of nude women, though this cover was not used for the U.S. release.

The LP reached #1 in the U.S. and #6 in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Electric Ladyland a rare 5 star review:

Jimi Hendrix’s third and final album with the original Experience found him taking his funk and psychedelic sounds to the absolute limit. The result was not only one of the best rock albums of the era, but also Hendrix’s original musical vision at its absolute apex. When revisionist rock critics refer to him as the maker of a generation’s mightiest dope music, this is the album they’re referring to.

Background: Released in March 1971, The Cry of Love was the first studio album by Jimi Hendrix to be released after his death.

The album reached #3 on the U.S. charts and #2 in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave The Cry of Love a 4 star review:

This was the first of the posthumous releases in the Jimi Hendrix catalog and probably the best as it collected most of the studio tracks that were either completed or very near completion before Hendrix died. Some of these tunes, like “Angel” and “Ezy Rider,” have become well-known pieces in the Hendrix canon, but they sit alongside lesser-known gems like “Night Bird Flying” and the Dylanesque “My Friend.”
