Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon sealed U.S. picture disc LP

pink floyd - dark side of the moon u.s. picture disc lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. copy of the picture disc version of The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, issued as a limited edition in 1979.

About this copy: This copy of Dark Side of the Moon is a 1979 pressing on the Capitol label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is mostly intact, with two large tears – one in the lower right hand corner and another along the lower right hand edge that measures about 5″ (12 cm).   We have secured this with tape in order to prevent further tearing.

Unlike many copies, this one does not have a cutout hole or saw mark in the cover.

A nice copy of a picture disc that is hard to find in good condition.

Background:  In the late 1970s, record companies began issuing picture discs of new albums as promotional items. They became quite popular among collectors, so the record companies began releasing limited edition picture disc versions of both then-new titles as well as older popular titles from their back catalog.

One of the older titles released by Capitol Records was Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, then (and now) one of the best-selling albums in history.

The picture disc fad was a short-lived one, as consumers began to balk at the idea of paying nearly twice as much for a limited edition item that didn’t sound as good as the regular pressing. In time, these limited edition pressings became somewhat scarce, particularly in new, unopened condition.

The Dark Side of the Moon was Pink Floyd’s eighth album and it’s the one that made them superstars. Reaching #1 in the U.S. and #2 in the UK, the album is one of the biggest selling albums in history.

While the album topped the U.S. charts for only one week, it spent 741 weeks in the U.S. top 200 – fifteen years.

Allmusic.com gave The Dark Side of the Moon a rare 5 star review:

By condensing the sonic explorations of Meddle to actual songs and adding a lush, immaculate production to their trippiest instrumental sections, Pink Floyd inadvertently designed their commercial breakthrough with Dark Side of the Moon. …Pink Floyd may have better albums than Dark Side of the Moon, but no other record defines them quite as well as this one.

Pink Floyd – Animals sealed 1977 French pink vinyl LP

pink floyd - animals french pink vinyl lp

About this copy:  This copy of Animals is a 1977 French pressing on the Harvest/EMI label.

This copy features the standard cover showing the Battersea power station.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The cover is sealed inside of a thick plastic bag that is held shut by a large sticker that says “Disque Rouge – Tirage Limite”

The bag is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.  The sticker is fully intact with no rips, tears, holes, or writing.

There is an original price sticker on the bag (not shown) dated 9-9-77.

A virtually perfect copy of a rare Pink Floyd LP that is almost never found still sealed.

Background: Animals was the tenth studio album by Pink Floyd. The album reached #2 in the UK and #3 on the U.S.album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Animals a 4 star review:

Of all of the classic-era Pink Floyd albums, Animals is the strangest and darkest, a record that’s hard to initially embrace yet winds up yielding as many rewards as its equally nihilistic successor, The Wall. It isn’t that Roger Waters dismisses the human race as either pigs, dogs, or sheep, it’s that he’s constructed an album whose music is as bleak and bitter as that world view. …Through it all, though, the utter blackness of Waters’ spirit holds true, and since there are no vocal hooks or melodies, everything rests on the mood, the near-nihilistic lyrics, and Gilmour’s guitar. These are the kinds of things that satisfy cultists, and it will reward their attention — there’s just no way in for casual listeners.

In the late 1970s, collectors began to show interest in colored vinyl and picture discs, and record companies began issuing limited editions of both old and new albums in those formats in order to generate additional revenue.  Most of these titles were available only for a short time, and many of the titles made in Europe were widely exported to the U.S.

During this time, there were a number of colored vinyl albums issued around the world by Pink Floyd, but the 1977 pressing of Animals from France on pink vinyl may have been the first.

For some reason, Harvest Records in France released two versions of this colored vinyl LP.  The first issue featured the regular cover depicting the pig flying over the Battersea power station and included the custom lyric sleeve.  There was also a sticker on the bag in which the album was shipped that said “Disque rouge – tirage limite” (“Pink Disk – Limited Edition”.)

The harder-to-find second version came in a cover that was all pink, with no graphics or writing whatsoever.  The inner sleeve was also all pink, again with no writing.  The pink vinyl record had the standard custom label that appeared on other versions of the album issued worldwide.

Little is known about these all pink pressings, or why they were made in addition to those with the regular covers.  We’ve seen them advertised as “promotional copies,” but there is nothing on the record or cover to suggest that they are promos, and we remember these being sold at retail when they were new.  As far as we know, the record company just decided to make two versions.

Pink Floyd – Atom Heart Mother Japan LP

pink floyd - atom heart mother japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Atom Heart Mother is a 1974 pressing of an album that was originally released in 1970.

The cover is M- with a couple of minor foxing spots on the front.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce Pink Floyd LP.  This particular pressing appears to have not sold very well.

Background:  Released in 1970, Atom Heart Mother was the fifth album by Pink Floyd.

The album reached #1 on the UK charts, but peaked at #55 on the U.S. charts, making it what was then the highest-ever charting album in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave Atom Heart Mother a 3 star review:

Appearing after the sprawling, unfocused double-album set Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother may boast more focus, even a concept, yet that doesn’t mean it’s more accessible. If anything, this is the most impenetrable album Pink Floyd released while on Harvest, which also makes it one of the most interesting of the era. Still, it may be an acquired taste even for fans, especially since it kicks off with a side-long, 23-minute extended orchestral piece that may not seem to head anywhere, but is often intriguing, more in what it suggests than what it achieves.

Pink Floyd – Ummagumma original Dutch 2 LP set no EMI

pink floyd - ummagumma dutch LP

Offered for sale is an original Dutch pressing of the double album Ummagumma by Pink Floyd.

These first pressings were issued in UK-printed covers and do not have “EMI” on the labels.

About this copy: This copy of Ummagumma is a 1969 pressing on the EMI label.

The UK-printed cover is M-; “London” is spelled correctly.

The original plastic-lined inner sleeves are included and are M-.

The two discs say “BIEM” on the labels, but do not mention EMI, as later pressings did.

The two discs are M- and look unplayed.  Sides one and two have a faint stain where stickers were removed.

A beautiful copy of an album that’s hard to find as a first pressing.

Background: Released in late 1969, Ummagumma was the fourth album by Pink Floyd, consisting of one live disc and one studio disc.

The album reached #5 on the UK charts and #74 on the U.S. charts, though it was later certified Platinum by the RIAA.

Allmusic.com gave Ummagumma a 3 1/2 star review:

For many years, this double-LP was one of the most popular albums in Pink Floyd’s pre-Dark Side of the Moon output, containing a live LP and a studio LP for the price of one. The live set, recorded in Birmingham and Manchester in June 1969, is limited to four numbers…”Astronomy Domine,” “Careful with That Axe Eugene,” “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun,” and “A Saucerful of Secrets” are all superior here to their studio originals, done longer, louder, and harder, with a real edge to the playing. The studio LP was more experimental, each member getting a certain amount of space on the record to make his own music. ..Roger Waters’ “Grantchester Meadows” was a lyrical folk-like number unlike almost anything else the group ever did.

Pink Floyd – The Final Cut 1983 Japan LP with obi

pink floyd - the final cut japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of The Final Cut by Pink Floyd, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of The Final Cut is a 1983 pressing on the CBS/Sony label.

The cover is M-  The obi is M-.  The lyric insert is M-.  The custom inner sleeve is M-.

The disc is M- and looks like it has been played no more than once.  Beautiful disc!

A nice copy of a scarce Pink Floyd LP.

Background: Released in 1983, The Final Cut was the twelfth studio album by Pink Floyd.

The album reached #1 on the UK charts and #6 in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave The Final Cut a 3 star review:

The Final Cut extends the autobiography of The Wall, concentrating on Roger Waters’ pain when his father died in World War II. Waters spins this off into a treatise on the futility of war, concentrating on the Falkland Islands, setting his blistering condemnations and scathing anger to impossibly subdued music that demands full attention. This is more like a novel than a record, requiring total concentration since shifts in dynamics, orchestration, and instrumentation are used as effect. …And it’s equally clear that Pink Floyd couldn’t have continued in this direction — Waters had no interest in a group setting anymore, as this record, which is hardly a Floyd album in many respects, illustrates. Distinctive, to be sure, but not easy to love and, depending on your view, not even that easy to admire.
