A nice copy of a scarce Neil Young LP.

Background: Released in 1982, Trans was the fourteenth studio album by Neil Young.

The album reached #19 on the U.S. album chart and #29 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave Trans this review:

When it was released, Trans was Neil Young’s most baffling album. He had employed a vocoder to synthesize his voice on five of the album’s nine tracks, resulting in disembodied singing, the lyrics nearly impossible to decipher without the lyric sheet. And even when you read the words, “Computer Age,” “We R in Control,” “Transformer Man,” “Computer Cowboy,” and “Sample and Hold” seemed like a vague mishmash of high-tech jargon. Later, Young would reveal that some of the songs expressed a theme of attempted communication with his disabled son, and in that context, lines like “I stand by you” and “So many things still left to do/But we haven’t made it yet” seemed clearer. But the vocoder, which robbed Young’s voice of its dynamics and phrasing, still kept the songs from being as moving as they were intended to be.

Bubble Puppy – A Gathering of Promises 1969 U.S. psych LP shrink

Bubble Puppy - A Gathering of Promises 1969 U.S. psych LP

Offered for sale is an original U.S. pressing of A Gathering of Promises by Bubble Puppy, with the cover still in the original shrink wrap.

About this copy: This copy of A Gathering of Promises is a 1969 U.S. pressing on the International Artists label.

The cover is M- and is still in the original shrink wrap.  A hype sticker on the wrap that says “This album contains HOT SMOKE” and then lists all of the song titles.

The disc is M- with one or two faint scuffs from the original paper inner sleeve.  There are no spindle marks on the labels. Clean disc!

This LP comes from our own collection.  We bought it new decades ago and have played it just a few times.  It’s a beauty.

Background: Released in 1969, A Gathering of Promises was the only album by Texas-based Bubble Puppy, though they later released a second album under the name of Demian.

The album did not chart.

Allmusic.com gave A Gathering of Promises a 4 star review:

Recording for International Artists Records, the crazed Texas label that brought the world such acid-damaged visionaries as the 13th Floor Elevators, the Red Krayola, Lost & Found, and Electric Rubayyat, the Bubble Puppy seemed by comparison to be a beacon of semisanity — a rather typical psychedelic band of the period who seemed more interested in having a good time and cranking up the amps than in reimagining the size and shape of the inner cosmos. But that’s not to say they weren’t a good psychedelic band — the band’s best known tune, “Hot Smoke and Sassafras,” was a charging guitar-heavy rocker that deservedly became a hit single, and its flip side, “Loney,” was nearly as good. …It’s not exactly a work of life-changing genius, but A Gathering of Promises is still a noticeably stronger and better crafted album than most bands of their time and place were turning out, and if it had enjoyed wider distribution (and another song or two as good as the single) who knows where they could have ended up.

Meat Loaf – Bat Out of Hell sealed 1979 U.S. picture disc LP

Meat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell U.S. picture disc LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. picture disc edition of Meat Loaf’s album Bat Out of Hell.

About this copy: This copy of Bat Out of Hell is a still sealed 1979 U.S. pressing  on the Epic label.  This version has a burgundy cover with bats printed on it, unlike the promotional edition, which had an all-black cover.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact, with no rips, tears, or holes.  There is a bend in the upper left hand corner.

It’s a nice copy of a great-looking picture disc and the first copy we’ve had in quite a while.

Background: Meat Loaf’s second album, Bat Out of Hell, created quite a sensation when it was released in 1977. To promote the album, Epic Records pressed a picture disc edition of the album with a black cover, which was issued only as a promotional item.

As this album was changing hands among collectors at premium prices, Epic Records in the U.S. opted to release the picture disc commercially, though the U.S. stock pressings have a burgundy cover with small bats printed on it.

While the album peaked at #14 on the U.S. album chart, the album has since sold nearly 40 million copies worldwide.

Allmusic.com gave Bat Out of Hell a 4 1/2 star review:

There is no other album like Bat Out of Hell, unless you want to count the sequel. This is Grand Guignol pop — epic, gothic, operatic, and silly, and it’s appealing because of all of this. Jim Steinman was a composer without peer, simply because nobody else wanted to make mini-epics like this. …It may be easy to dismiss this as ridiculous, but there’s real style and craft here and its kitsch is intentional. It may elevate adolescent passion to operatic dimensions, and that’s certainly silly, but it’s hard not to marvel at the skill behind this grandly silly, irresistible album.

The cover is M- and is still in the original shrink wrap.

The disc is M- and may be unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a pretty good Jazz LP.

Background: Released in 1964, Jazz Impressions Of “A Boy Named Charlie Brown was the sixth album by Vince Guaraldi.

The album was intended to serve as the soundtrack to a documentary television special that never actually appeared on air.

Allmusic.com gave A Boy Named Charlie Brown a 5 star review:

Originally titled Jazz Impressions of a Boy Named Charlie Brown, this is an important album not only because it is Guaraldi’s first Peanuts soundtrack, but also because the music heard here probably introduced millions of kids (and their parents) to jazz from the mid-’60s onward. Actually, this music is the score for a documentary on the Peanuts phenomenon called A Boy Named Charlie Brown, which ran before the first Peanuts specials per se appeared on the CBS network. The most remarkable thing, besides the high quality of Guaraldi’s whimsically swinging tunes, is that he did not compromise his art one iota for the cartoon world; indeed, he sounds even more engaged, inventive, and lighthearted in his piano work here than ever.

Vince Guaraldi – A Charlie Brown Christmas 1982 U.S. LP

Offered for sale is a U.S. pressing of A Charlie Brown Christmas by the Vince Guaraldi Trio.

A nice copy  of a classic LP.  Unlike recent reissues, this copy was mastered from analog tape and sounds great.

Background: Released in 1965, A Charlie Brown Christmas was the soundtrack to the U.S. television special of the same name and was the seventh album by Vince Guaraldi.

The album has sold more than 5 million copies in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave A Charlie Brown Christmas a 5 star review:

Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz called on pianist extraordinaire Vince Guaraldi and his trio to compose and perform music that would reflect the humor, charm, and innocence of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the entire Peanuts gang for their 1965 Christmas TV special. It was a perfect match: Guaraldi strings together elegant, enticing arrangements that reflect the spirit and mood of Schulz’s work and introduce contemporary jazz to youngsters with grace, charm, and creativity. …As for Guaraldi, his penetrating improvisational phrases paint pictures of the first winter snowfall, myriad glistening trees, and powdery white landscapes. With its blend of contemporary jazz and lyrical mannerisms, A Charlie Brown Christmas is a joyous and festive meditation for the holiday season.

Monkees – Headquarters 1974 Japan LP with flowers cover and cap obi

The disc is M- with a couple of spindle marks and one or two very faint sleeve scuffs.  It’s a very clean disc that has had little play.

A nice copy of a very rare Monkees LP.

Background: Released in 1967, Headquarters was the third album by the Monkees, and the band’s only album on which they played their own instruments on all tracks.

The album reached #1 on the U.S. charts and #2 in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Headquarters a 4 1/2 star review:

After the release of More of the Monkees, on which the band had little involvement beyond providing vocals and a couple Mike Nesmith-composed songs, the pre-fab four decided to take control of their recording destiny. After a well-timed fist through the wall of a hotel suite and many fevered negotiations, music supervisor Don Kirschner was out and the band hit the studio by themselves. With the help of producer Chip Douglas, the band spent some time learning how to be a band (as documented on the Headquarters Sessions box set) and set about recording what turned out to be a dynamic, exciting, and impressive album. Headquarters doesn’t contain any of the group’s biggest hits, but it does have some of their best songs.

The album reached #19 on the U.S. album chart and #24 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave Bark at the Moon a 3 star review:

Ozzy Osbourne finds a permanent replacement for Randy Rhoads in Jake E. Lee, a more standard metal guitarist without Rhoads’ neo-classical compositional ability or stylistic flair. Still, Osbourne and his band turn in a competent, workmanlike set of heavy metal featuring the crunching title track, whose video (featuring Osbourne dressed as a werewolf) became popular on MTV.

The disc is VG++ on side one with a couple of very faint inaudible hairlines.  Side two is M- with a few spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  It’s a clean disc that has had little play.

A nice copy of a scarce Badfinger LP, and the only copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: Released in 1973, Ass was the fourth album by Badfinger, and the band’s final album for Apple Records.

The album reached #122 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Ass this review:

Badfinger produced the sessions for the Straight Up sequel themselves, abandoning its lush production for a live, hard-rocking sound. Apple wasn’t keen on the record, insisting that it be remixed, then, once it was remixed, refusing to release it, so the band jumped ship to Warner Bros. in the fall of 1973. Just after Badfinger released their debut single for the label and were prepping a new album, Apple sprung Ass on the world. …It wasn’t fated to be a great album, and it wound up being the weakest thing the original band cut.

Yes – Yessongs 1975 Japan 3 LP live album with obi

Yes - Yessongs 1975 Japan 3 LP

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of the triple live album Yessongs by Yes, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Yessongs is a 1975 Japanese pressing on the Atlantic label of an album that was originally released in 1973.

The cover is VG++ and close to M- with slight corner wear.  The obi is VG++ with a tiny (0.5 cm) tear along the right hand edge.  The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached.

The insert and booklet are M-.  The three custom inner sleeves are M- with no splits.

The three discs are M- with one or two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean discs!

A nice copy of a very good, if long, live LP.

Background: Released in 1973, Yessongs was the first live album by Yes.

The album reached #7 on the UK album chart and #12 on the U.S.chart.

Allmusic.com gave Yessongs a 4 star review:

In many ways, the extravagance of this package equates the profligacy of the prog rock combo themselves. After all, how else but on a triple-LP collection could one hope to re-create — or merely contain — an adequate sampling of Yes’ live presentation? Especially since their tunes typically clocked in in excess of ten minutes.

One of their trademarks has always been an ability to re-create their often densely layered sound in concert. They effortlessly pull off the tricky chord progressions and changes in time signatures of “Siberian Khatru” and a sublime “Heart of the Sunrise,” which unquestionably bests the dexterity of its carefully crafted studio counterpart. Both Howe and Squire’s respective solos during “The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus)” are highlights as they give the entire unit an opportunity to show off their capacity for dramatic dynamics. The remainder of Yessongs is similarly strong, particularly the note-perfect “Close to the Edge,” and the inspired concluding instrumental jam during “Starship Trooper.”

The obi is VG+ with a couple of minor wrinkles and slight foxing on the back.  The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached.

The insert is M-.

A nice copy of a rare Yes LP.

Background: Released in 1973, Tales From Topographic Oceans was the sixth album by Yes.

The album reached #1 on the UK album chart and #6 on the U.S. chart.

Allmusic.com gave Tales From Topographic Oceans a 3 1/2 star review:

Decades after its release, Tales from Topographic Oceans is still the most controversial record in Yes’ output. This was the place where Yes either fulfilled all of the promise shown on their previous five albums or slid off the rails in a fit of artistic hubris, especially on the part of lead singer Jon Anderson and guitarist Steve Howe, who dominated the composition credits here. Actually, the group probably did a bit of both across 80 minutes of music on a fully packed double-LP set. The musical ambitions of Yes were obvious on its face. It consisted of four long songs (really suites), each taking up a side of an album, and each longer than the previous album’s side-long “Close to the Edge.” ,,, In another reality, perhaps the gorgeous, folk-like passages on Tales would have spawned songs of four or five minutes, but here they are, woven into these long-form pieces, and if one can take the plunge into these particular sonic oceans, and comfortably stay under long enough, it’s a journey that will reward. But it’s not a trip that everyone — nor even every Yes fan — is going to take, especially not too soon after discovering the album.
