Cream – Fresh Cream original 1967 U.S. Atco stereo LP

cream - fresh cream u.s. stereo lp

Offered for sale is an original U.S. pressing of Fresh Cream, the debut LP by Cream.

About this copy: This copy of Fresh Cream is a 1967 U.S. pressing on the purple and brown Atco label.

The cover is VG+, with slight edge and corner wear.

The disc is VG++ with a couple of light scuffs.  It’s a clean disc that has had little play.  The disc was pressed at Columbia Records’ Terre Haute, Indiana pressing plant.

A nice copy of a classic LP.

Background: Cream is highly and rightly regarded as rock’s first supergroup, combining Eric Clapton of the Yardbirds with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce from Graham Bond’s band.  While the band only released four albums before breaking up, they’re regarded as one of the most influential bands in rock history.

Fresh Cream, their 1966 debut, included the tracks “I Feel Free,” “Toad,” and “I’m So Glad.”  The album was originally released in both stereo and mono, and later pressings replaced “I Feel Free” with “Spoonful.”

Modern Jazz Quartet – Fontessa 1960 U.S. stereo LP

modern jazz quartet fontessa u.s. stereo lp

Offered for sale is a U.S. stereo pressing of Fontessa by the Modern Jazz Quartet.

About this copy: This copy of Fontessa is a 1960 U.S. stereo pressing on the blue/green Atlantic label of an album that was originally released in 1956.

The laminated cover is VG++ and close to M- with slight wear on the back cover.

The disc is VG++ and close to M- with a couple of faint sleeve scuffs, but no other marks on the vinyl and no spindle marks on the labels.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific (and very well-recorded) MJQ LP.

Background: Released in 1956, Fontessa was the sixth album by the Modern Jazz Quartet and their first album for Atlantic.

Allmusic.com gave Fontessa a 4 1/2 star review:

This LP has a particularly strong all-around set by the Modern Jazz Quartet. While John Lewis’ “Versailles” and an 11-minute “Fontessa” show the seriousness of the group (and the influence of Western classical music), other pieces (such as “Bluesology,” “Woody ‘N You” and a pair of ballads) look toward the group’s roots in bop and permit the band to swing hard.

Modern Jazz Quartet – Plays One Never Knows 1958 U.S. green label stereo LP

The Modern Jazz Quartet Plays One Never Knows u.s. stereo LP

Offered for sale is an original U.S. stereo pressing of The Modern Jazz Quartet Plays One Never Knows by the Modern Jazz Quartet.

This LP is also known as No Sun in Venice.

About this copy: This copy of The Modern Jazz Quartet Plays One Never Knows is a 1968 U.S. stereo pressing on the green Atlantic label.

The laminated cover is M- with a tiny corner dent.  This is a mono cover with “STEREO DISC” stamped on the front.

The green label stereo disc is VG+ on side one with a couple of sleeve scuffs and a couple of hairlines through the final track.  Side two is VG++ and close to M- with a couple of faint sleeve scuffs.  It’s a clean disc that plays well.

A nice copy of a pretty good MJQ album that’s hard to find as a first pressing, especially in stereo.

Background: Released in 1957, The Modern Jazz Quartet Plays One Never Knows was the ninth album by the Modern Jazz Quartet.

Allmusic.com gave The Modern Jazz Quartet Plays One Never Knows a 3 star review:

This recording has six John Lewis compositions that were used in the French film No Sun in Venice. The music is quite complex and disciplined, making this set of lesser interest to fans who prefer to hear Milt Jackson playing bebop-oriented blues. However the versatile group was perfect for this type of music and these thought-provoking performances reward repeated listenings.

Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 – Fool on the Hill 1968 U.S. stereo LP shrink

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - Fool on the Hill 1968 U.S. stereo LP

Offered for sale is an original U.S. pressing of Fool on the Hill, the fourth album by Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66, with the cover still in the original shrink wrap.

About this copy: This copy of Fool on the Hill is a 1968 U.S. pressing on the A&M label.

The gatefold cover is M- and is still in the original shrink wrap.  A price sticker is attached to the wrap.

The disc is M- and may be unplayed.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a pretty good album.

Background: Released in 1968, Fool on the Hill was the fourth album by Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66.

The album reached #3 on the U.S. album chart; the title track reached #6 on the U.S. singles chart.

Allmusic.com gave Fool on the Hill a 4 1/2 star review:

Having hit upon another smash formula — cover versions of pop/rock hits backed by lavish strings, a simplified bossa nova rhythm, and the leader’s piano comping — Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 produced two more chart-busting singles, again turning to the Beatles for sustenance with the title track (number six) and Simon & Garfunkel for “Scarborough Fair” (number 16). … Even though he had become thoroughly embedded in the consciousness of mainstream America, Mendes still managed to have it three ways, exposing first-class tunes from little-known Brazilian talent, garnering commercial hits, and also making some fine records. Cultural note: the striking foldout cover art, depicting Brasil ’66 at sunset seated on top of a nude woman, somehow made it past the uptight censors of the day and no doubt boosted sales; it was Mendes’ highest-charting album at number three.

Beatles – Magical Mystery Tour sealed 1977 or 1981 German true stereo LP

beatles magical mystery tour german lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed German pressing of Magical Mystery Tour by the Beatles, featuring all of the songs in true stereo* as well as a cover that was unique to the German release.

About this copy:  This copy of Magical Mystery Tour is a 1977 or possibly a 1981 German pressing on the Apple label.  This is the scarce later pressing and not the more common early 1970s pressing with the “Hor Zu” logo on the label and cover.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.  As we cannot examine the record, the stamper numbers are unknown and we cannot definitively determine if this is the 1977 pressing or the very similar 1981 pressing, which had an identical cover.  This may or may not be the rare “hot” pressing with A1/B1 stampers, though the cover is identical to copies of that pressing that we’ve had for sale in the past.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips tears, or holes.  There is a tiny corner dent in the upper left hand corner.  It’s more visible from the back; it’s barely noticeable from the front.

An exceptionally copy of a terrific record that has become quite scarce in recent years.

Background:  Released in 1967, Magical Mystery Tour was a collection of songs from the film of the same name combined with some singles that had been released shortly before the album.

In the UK, the material from the film was released as a double EP set, but in Japan, the album was released in the U.S. format.  The album reached #1 in the U.S.  The album was not released in the UK until 1976.

*The album was not released in Germany until 1971; the German release used different master tapes that used true stereo mixes for all the tracks except “I Am the Walrus,” which is true stereo for the first half of the song and artificial stereo for the last half of the song.

Allmusic.com gave Magical Mystery Tour a 5 star review:

The U.S. version of the soundtrack for the Beatles’ ill-fated British television special embellished the six songs that were found on the British Magical Mystery Tour double EP with five other cuts from their 1967 singles. The psychedelic sound is very much in the vein of Sgt. Pepper’s, and even spacier in parts (especially the sound collages of “I Am the Walrus”). Unlike Sgt. Pepper’s, there’s no vague overall conceptual/thematic unity to the material, which has made Magical Mystery Tour suffer slightly in comparison. Still, the music is mostly great.

As Magical Mystery Tour was a soundtrack to a film that contained only six new songs, EMI Records in Britain decided to release the material as a set of two 7″ EPs.  In the U.S., Capitol Records issued the material as a full album, by combining A and B sides of then-current singles.  As there were no true stereo mixes of those singles at the time, most of the second side of the album was issued in the United States in Capitol’s “Duophonic” fake stereo.

In the early 1970s, true stereo mixes of those songs became available, and Apple Records released the full LP in Germany using those stereo mixes.  On this version, the entire album was in true stereo with the exception of the second half of “I Am the Walrus,” for which no true stereo mix exists.

The German album was also issued with a unique cover, though without the gatefold cover and book that accompanied the U.S. album and the UK EP release.

Most of the German copies of Magical Mystery Tour  that we’ve seen over the years were sold through Hörzu, a German television listings magazine.  These copies have the Hörzu logo on both the cover and record label, and seem to be more common than those purchased elsewhere.

Beach Boys – Pet Sounds 1999 U.S. 180 gram true stereo LP shrink

beach boys pet sounds 1999 u.s. stereo LP

Offered for sale is a copy of the U.S. 180 gram true stereo pressing of Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys.

This limited edition 1999 pressing represented the first time the album had ever been released in true stereo.

About this copy: This copy of Pet Sounds is a 1999 U.S. 180 gram vinyl pressing on the Capitol label of an album that was originally released in 1966.

The cover is M- and is still in the original shrink wrap.  A sticker on the wrap indicates that it’s the album’s first stereo release and that it’s pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a classic LP.  Sounds good in stereo, too.

Background: Pet Sounds, released in 1966, is generally regarded as the best Beach Boys album, and one of the great rock albums of all time. While not a big seller when first released, the album has grown in reputation over the years and has never gone out of print.

Allmusic.com gave Pet Sounds 5 stars:

The best Beach Boys album, and one of the best of the 1960s. The group here reached a whole new level in terms of both composition and production, layering tracks upon tracks of vocals and instruments to create a richly symphonic sound. Conventional keyboards and guitars were combined with exotic touches of orchestrated strings, bicycle bells, buzzing organs, harpsichords, flutes, Theremin, Hawaiian-sounding string instruments, Coca-Cola cans, barking dogs, and more. It wouldn’t have been a classic without great songs, and this has some of the group’s most stunning melodies, as well as lyrical themes which evoke both the intensity of newly born love affairs and the disappointment of failed romance (add in some general statements about loss of innocence and modern-day confusion as well).

Sergio Mendes Trio – In The Brazilian Bag u.s. stereo LP

Offered for sale is an original U.S. stereo copy of In the Brazilian Bag by the Sergio Mendes Trio.

Note: This 1966 LP is a reissue of the 1965 album Brasil ’65 Featuring Wanda de Sah.

About this copy: This copy of In the Brazilian Bag is a 1966 U.S. pressing on the brown Tower label.

The cover is VG++ with slight ring wear.  The disc is M- and may be unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific Bossa Nova LP.

Background: Released in 1965, Brasil ’65 was the seventh album by Sergio Mendes, though singer Wanda de Sah is featured more prominently on the cover.

Allmusic.com gave Brasil ’65 a 4 star review:

In 1965, Sergio Mendes and his trio conducted their first out-of-Brazil experiment: They recorded in L.A. for the first time in what proved to be their first major move into the U.S. market and their embrace of the new bossa nova sound. Accompanying the Mendes band were then-great vocalist Wanda de Sah and guitarist Rosinha de Valenca. This is deeply swinging bossa; it is crisp and pops out at the listener in every conceivable way. It features exotic and pioneering rhythmic work, smooth accessibility, and sophisticated melodies, many of which were written by the hottest talents in Brazil…. This stands with Mendes’ best work from Brazil and is truly one of his American highlights.

Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 – Equinox 1967 U.S. stereo LP shrink

sergio mendes equinox u.s. stereo LP

Offered for sale is an original U.S. stereo pressing of Equinox by Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66, with the cover still in the shrink wrap.

About this copy: This copy of Equinox is a 1967 U.S. pressing on the A&M label.

The cover is M- and is still in the original shrink wrap.

The disc, pressed at the highly regarded Monarch pressing plant, is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

Note: Due to a manufacturing error, the album has side two labels on both sides of the disc.  It plays the correct songs on both sides.

A nice copy of a terrific (and well-recorded) Bossa Nova LP.

Background: Released in 1967, Equinox was the second album by Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66.

The album reached #24 on the U.S. album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Equinox a 4 1/2 star review:

Equinox continues the scrumptiously winning sound that Sergio Mendes cooked up in the mid-’60s, this time a bit more fleshed out with John Pisano’s guitar, a slightly thicker texture, and even an imitation sitar (this was, after all, 1967). Again, the mix of American pop tunes old and new and Brazilian standards and sleepers is impeccable (although it didn’t yield any substantial hits), and the treatments are smooth, swinging, and very much to the point. … Lani Hall’s star was just rising at this time, and it is her cool, clear voice that haunts the memory most often. Like its predecessor, Equinox is exceedingly brief in duration, yet not a motion is wasted.

Buffalo Springfield – Buffalo Springfield Again 1968 UK stereo LP

buffalo springfield again uk stereo lp

Offered for sale is an  original UK stereo pressing of Buffalo Springfield Again by Buffalo Springfield.

About this copy: This copy of Buffalo Springfield Again is a 1968 UK stereo pressing on the red and plum Atlantic label

The cover is VG+ with slight discoloration on the back cover and a few minor lamination cracks.  The back cover has six lines of text below the Atlantic logo in the top right hand corner.

The stereo disc is VG, with a number of scuffs on both sides, but no significant marks.  It plays well.

A nice copy of an album that’s quite hard to find as a first pressing.

Background: Released in October 1967, Buffalo Springfield Again was the second of three albums by Buffalo Springfield.

The album reached #44 on the U.S. album charts, though it’s generally regarded as the band’s best album.

Allmusic.com gave Buffalo Springfield Again a 5 star review:

Due in part to personnel problems which saw Bruce Palmer and Neil Young in and out of the group, Buffalo Springfield’s second album did not have as unified an approach as their debut. Yet it doesn’t suffer for that in the least — indeed, the group continued to make major strides in both their songwriting and arranging, and this record stands as their greatest triumph. …Although a slightly uneven record that did not feature the entire band on several cuts, the high points were so high and plentiful that its classic status cannot be denied.
