beatles 1962-1966 japan red vinyl promo lp

Offered for sale is a limited edition Japanese red vinyl white label promotional pressing of the double album The Beatles 1962-1966 by the Beatles, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of The Beatles 1962-1966 is a 1978 Japanese pressing on the Apple label of an album that was originally released (on black vinyl only) in 1973.

The cover is M-, aside from very slight wear at the lower left hand corner.

The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.  The custom inner sleeves are M- with no splits.

The red vinyl white label promotional discs are M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean discs!

A gorgeous copy of a scarce Beatles LP and the only promotional copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: In 1973, a company in the U.S. illegally created a “best of” box set by the Beatles called The Beatles – Alpha and Omega.  That album was heavily advertised on television and sold well, but it attracted the attention of the Beatles’ record company, Capitol Records.  They sued to have the album removed from the market.

Seeing a good opportunity, Capitol then issued four discs of Beatles hits themselves as two separate albums with the same cover photos:

The Beatles 1962-1966 covered the band’s early years and had a cover with a red border.  The Beatles 1967-1970 covered the band’s later years and had a cover with a blue border.

In 1978, the two albums were released as limited editions on red and blue vinyl, respectively, in a number of countries around the world, including the U.S. and Japan.  In Japan, the LPs were reissued in 1982 on blue vinyl with the same catalog number and a different obi.

Frank Zappa/Mothers – Bongo Fury 1975 Japan white label promotional live LP with obi

frank zappa captain beefheart bongo fury japan promo lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese white label promotional pressing of the live album Bongo Fury, by Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, and the Mothers of Invention, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Bongo Fury is a 1975 Japanese pressing on the Discreet label.

The cover is VG+ with slight edge and corner wear, mostly at the top edge.  There is a sticker on the front cover that says “SAMPLE” in Japanese and English.

The obi is VG+ with slight wear at the top and bottom edge and a couple of wrinkles on the “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag), which is still attached.

The white label promo disc is M- with one or two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a rare Zappa LP, as his albums sold poorly in Japan.

Background: Released in 1975, Bongo Fury was the twenty first album by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.

The album reached #66 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Bongo Fury a 3 1/2 star review:

Bongo Fury captures Captain Beefheart aka Don Van Vliet with Frank Zappa during their brief reunion for a series of shows in the spring of 1975. This album is a pastiche of both live performances — taken from two evenings at the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, TX — and studio recordings that were almost a year-and-a-half old. This is the last album to feature the highly technical jazz fusion of Mothers of Invention, whose roots can be traced back to 1973 circa Over-Nite Sensation. The live portions are highlighted by the latest addition to the band — frenetic percussionist extraordinaire Terry “Ted” Bozzio, who would stay with Zappa for a majority of the ’70s. Most Zappa enthusiasts either love or hate Bongo Fury. Much of the disparity has to do with the lack of the extended fusion-based instrumentals that had graced their predecessors One Size Fits All and Roxy & Elsewhere as much as it does with the inclusion of Captain Beefheart. Conversely, those consumers whose passions tend toward both Zappa and Captain Beefheart consider this disc as a mutual zenith.

Fleetwood Mac – Heroes Are Hard To Find 1977 Japan LP with obi

fleetwood mac heroes are hard to find japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Heroes Are Hard to Find by Fleetwood Mac, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Heroes Are Hard to Find is a 1977 Japanese pressing on the Reprise label of an album that was originally released in 1974.

The cover is M- and is still in shrink wrap.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a rather underrated Fleetwood Mac LP.

Background: Released in 1974, Heroes Are Hard to Find was the ninth studio album by Fleetwood Mac, and the final album to feature Bob Welch.

The album reached #34 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Heroes Are Hard to Find a 3 star review:

Although this was Bob Welch’s last album with the band he had worked with since 1971, it sounds like he’s at his peak. Pared down to a foursome for the first and (as of 2002) only time since the addition of Danny Kirwan, both Welch and Christine McVie contribute some of their finest songs. Bolstered by sympathetic self-production and imaginative, often aggressive arrangements that include brassy horns on the title track (a blatant but failed attempt at a hit single), the album is one of their most cohesive yet diverse. …Heroes is a minor gem that retains its effortless pop charms and contains some buried jewels in the extensive Fleetwood Mac catalog.

Fleetwood Mac – Future Games 1977 Japan white label promotional LP with obi and flyer

Offered for sale is a Japanese white label promotional copy of Future Games by Fleetwood Mac, including the original obi and promotional flyer.

About this copy: This copy of Future Games is a 1977 Japanese pressing on the Reprise label of an album that was originally released in 1971.

The cover is VG, with no wear but with a lot of foxing, mostly near the top edge.  There is a sticker in the upper right hand corner of the cover that says “SAMPLE” in both English and Japanese and a small yellow sticker on the spine.

The obi is VG+ with a couple of wrinkles and a small bit of writing on the front, but no tears.

The lyric insert is M-.  A promotional flyer announcing the reissue of this album, along with Penguin, Kiln House, and Then Play On is included and is M-.

The white label promo disc is M- with no spindle marks on the labels and no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a terrific LP.

Background: Released in 1971, Future Games was the fifth studio album by Fleetwood Mac and the first to feature Bob Welch on vocals and guitar.

The album reached #91 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Future Games a 3 1/2 star review:

By the time of this album’s release, Jeremy Spencer had been replaced by Bob Welch and Christine McVie had begun to assert herself more as a singer and songwriter. The result is a distinct move toward folk-rock and pop; Future Games sounds almost nothing like Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac. Bob Welch’s eight-minute title track, featuring lead guitar from Danny Kirwan, has one of Welch’s characteristic haunting melodies, and with pruning and better editing, it could have been a hit. Christine McVie’s “Show Me a Smile” is one of her loveliest ballads.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Tarkus Mobile Fidelity half speed mastered LP

emerson lake & palmer tarkus mobile fidelity lp

Offered for sale is a numbered, limited edition, half speed mastered pressing of Tarkus by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs and pressed on 200 gram vinyl.

About this copy: This copy of Tarkus is a 1994 U.S. pressing on the Mobile Fidelity label of an album that was originally released in 1971.

This copy is number 2934 of an unknown number of copies.

The cover is M-.  The posterboard stiffener is M-.

The 200 gram disc is M- and looks unplayed, with no marks of any kind on either the labels or the vinyl.  Beautiful disc!

A gorgeous copy of a terrific album.

Background: Released in 1971, Tarkus was the second studio album by Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

The album reached #1 on the UK charts and #9 in the U.S., where it was certified gold by the RIAA.

Allmusic.com gave Tarkus a 3 1/2 star review:

Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s 1970 eponymous LP was only a rehearsal. It hit hard because of the novelty of the act (allegedly the first supergroup in rock history), but felt more like a collection of individual efforts and ideas than a collective work. All doubts were dissipated by the release of Tarkus in 1971. …Tarkus makes a very solid album, especially to the ears of prog rock fans — no Greg Lake acoustic ballads, no lengthy jazz interludes. More accomplished than the trio’s first album, but not quite as polished as Brain Salad Surgery, Tarkus is nevertheless a must-have.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Emerson, Lake & Palmer Japan LP with obi

emerson lake & palmer japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, the self-titled debut album by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, including the original obi and lyric insert.

About this copy: This copy of Emerson, Lake & Palmer is a 1976 Atlantic label pressing of an album that was originally released in 1971.

The cover is VG++ with no wear.  A name has been lightly written in ballpoint pen in the upper right hand corner of the front cover.  The obi is M-.  The lyric insert is M-.

The disc is M- with a spindle mark on the side two label but no marks on the side one label or the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a terrific LP and a title we rarely have in stock for very long.

Background: Emerson, Lake & Palmer may have been hated by critics, but their brand of progressive rock certainly pleased the public, and their records sold well throughout the 1970s. Their debut album, featuring the track, Lucky Man, got lots of airplay and introduced a lot of listeners to both classically-tinted progressive rock and the sounds of the Moog synthesizer. Most of their albums are sought out by audiophiles, as well as prog rock fans, because they are quite well recorded as rock albums go.

Allmusic.com gave Emerson, Lake & Palmer a 4 1/2 star review:

Lively, ambitious, almost entirely successful debut album, made up of keyboard-dominated instrumentals (“The Barbarian,” “Three Fates”) and romantic ballads (“Lucky Man”) showcasing all three members’ very daunting talents. This album, which reached the Top 20 in America and got to number four in England, showcased the group at its least pretentious and most musicianly — with the exception of a few moments on “Three Fates” and perhaps “Take a Pebble,” there isn’t much excess, and there is a lot of impressive musicianship here.

A great copy of a record that sounds terrific.

Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) – Out of the Blue complete 1978 Japan 2 LP set with obi

elo out of the blue japan lp

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The custom inner sleeves, lyric insert, poster, and spaceship cutout are all M-.

The two discs are M- and look unplayed.  Clean discs!

A virtually perfect copy of an album that’s hard to find complete and easily the nicest copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: Released in 1977, Out of the Blue was the seventh studio album by the Electric Light Orchestra.

The album reached #4 on both the U.S. and UK charts.

Allmusic.com gave Out of the Blue a 3 1/2 star review:

The last ELO album to make a major impact on popular music, …  And well more than half is very solid, at least as songs, if not necessarily as recordings. “Sweet Talkin’ Woman” (which is a worthy successor to the previous album’s “Livin’ Thing”) and “Turn to Stone,” are among the best songs in the group’s output. And much of the rest is very entertaining — “Across the Border” sounds like what would result if the Beatles’ “Paperback Writer” and the Beach Boys’ Heroes and Villains” had somehow produced an offspring, with some synthesizer digressions and phased drumming typical of mid- to late-’70’s progressive rock.

Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) – Face the Music 1976 Japan LP with obi

elo face the music japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of Face the Music by the Electric Light Orchestra, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Face the Music is a 1976 Japanese pressing on the Polydor label.

The cover is VG++ and close to M- with trace corner wear.  The number “K-3543” has been rubber stamped on the inside of the cover.

The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is visually M- with one or two spindle marks on the labels and no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!  There is a minor stain on the side one label where a price sticker was removed and the number “K-3543” has been rubber stamped on the side one label.

A nice copy of a scarce (and pretty good) ELO LP.  This is the only first pressing we’ve ever seen.

Background: Face the Music was released in 1975 and was the fifth album by ELO and their first to be certified platinum, helped by the singles “Evil Woman” and “Strange Magic.”

The album didn’t chart in the UK, but reached #8 on the U.S. charts.

Allmusic.com gave Face the Music a 4 star review:

The sound is stripped down a bit on Face the Music, Louis Clark’s orchestral contributions generally more subdued than on Eldorado, even when they compete with the band, as on “Strange Magic.” The soulful “Evil Woman” was one of the most respectable chart hits of its era, and one of the best songs that Lynne ever wrote (reportedly in 30 minutes), while “Strange Magic” showed off his writing in a more ethereal vein. “One Summer Dream,” which is written in a similar mode, also has a touchingly wistful mood about it but is a somewhat lackluster finale compared to the albums that preceded and followed this one.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Pictures at an Exhibition U.S. Mobile Fidelity half speed mastered LP

elp pictures at an exhibition mobile fidelity lp

Offered for sale is a limited edition U.S. half speed mastered pressing of Pictures at an Exhibition by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs.

About this copy: This copy of Pictures at an Exhibition is a 1980 U.S. pressing on the Mobile Fidelity label of an album that was originally released in 1971.

While technically a U.S. release, the disc was pressed in Japan by JVC using their proprietary “Supervinyl” compound.

The cover is VG+, with light edge and corner wear.  The posterboard stiffener is included.

The half speed mastered disc is VG++ and close to M- with a couple of light hairlines on each side.  It’s a very clean disc that has had little play.

Background: Released in late 1971, Pictures at an Exhibition was Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s first live album, and their only live album to consist entirely of material that was not found on their studio albums.

The album reached #3 on the UK charts and #10 in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave Pictures at an Exhibition a 3 1/2 star review:

One of the seminal documents of the progressive rock era, a record that made its way into the collections of millions of high-school kids who never heard of Modest Mussorgsky and knew nothing of Russia’s Nationalist “Five.” It does some violence to Mussorgsky, but Pictures at an Exhibition is also the most energetic and well-realized live release in Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s catalog, and it makes a fairly compelling case for adapting classical pieces in this way.

Neil Young – Cowgirl in the Sand/Southern Man 1977 Canada “promotional” orange vinyl 12″ single

neil young cowgirl in the sand orange vinyl canada 12" single

Offered for sale is a copy of the orange vinyl “promotional” 12″ single of Cowgirl in the Sand/Southern Man by Neil Young, issued in Canada in 1977.

Note: We put the word “promotional” in quotes, as this single was reportedly an unauthorized release.

About this copy: This copy of “Cowgirl in the Sand” is a 1977 Canadian pressing on the Reprise label.

The disc was issued in a plain white cover that is VG+, with slight general wear.

The orange vinyl disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a scarce Neil Young EP and the first copy we’ve had for sale in many years.

Background: Released in 1977, this odd 12″ single claims to be a Canadian promotional item featuring two tracks from Neil Young’s then-new triple album Decade.

The disc was pressed on what appear to be legitimate Reprise labels and say “Made in Canada” on the labels.  While there is no indication the label that the record was created as a promotional item, these are usually described that way when they are offered for sale.

The creation of these discs was reportedly not authorized by Reprise Records and the discs were likely made by a record company employee on their own time.
