Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon original U.S. Mobile Fidelity LP

Offered for sale is an original U.S. half speed mastered pressing of The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, released by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs.

This is the 1979 first issue of the LP with the non-slanted text “Original Master Recording” at the top of the front cover.

About this copy: This copy of The Dark Side of the Moon is a 1979 U.S. pressing on the Mobile Fidelity label of an album that was originally released in 1973. While technically a U.S. release, the disc was pressed in Japan by JVC using their proprietary “Supervinyl” compound.

The cover is M- with trace corner wear. There are no splits. The posterboard stiffener and two inserts are M-.

The disc is M- with a couple of foxing spots on the labels, but no spindle marks and no marks on the vinyl. Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a Pink Floyd LP that is often found with major cover wear.

Background: The Dark Side of the Moon was Pink Floyd’s eighth album and it’s the one that made them superstars. Reaching #1 in the U.S. and #2 in the UK, the album is one of the biggest selling albums in history.

While the album topped the U.S. charts for only one week, it spent 741 weeks in the U.S. top 200 – fifteen years.

Pink Floyd – Atom Heart Mother red vinyl Japan LP with obi

Offered for sale is an original red vinyl Japanese pressing of Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Atom Heart Mother is a 1970 Japanese pressing on the Odeon label, pressed on “Everclean” red vinyl.

The cover is M-. The obi is VG++ with slight wear at the bottom edge, but no tears. The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached.

The second “tour” obi is VG++ with a repaired tear at the bottom edge.

The insert booklet is M-.

The red vinyl disc is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, and a very faint hairline on side two. Clean disc!

A nice copy of an album that’s hard to find complete on red vinyl and the nicest copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: Released in 1970, Atom Heart Mother was the fifth album by Pink Floyd.

The album reached #1 on the UK charts, but peaked at #55 on the U.S. charts, making it what was then the highest-ever charting album in the U.S.

Appearing after the sprawling, unfocused double-album set Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother may boast more focus, even a concept, yet that doesn’t mean it’s more accessible. If anything, this is the most impenetrable album Pink Floyd released while on Harvest, which also makes it one of the most interesting of the era. Still, it may be an acquired taste even for fans, especially since it kicks off with a side-long, 23-minute extended orchestral piece that may not seem to head anywhere, but is often intriguing, more in what it suggests than what it achieves.

In Japan, the first pressing of Atom Heart Mother was pressed on red “Everclean” vinyl and while it’s the most common Pink Floyd title to find on red wax, it’s still quite difficult to find one in playable condition and even harder to find with the original obi. Most of the copies of Atom Heart Mother we’ve seen from Japan over the years were in poor condition.

Pink Floyd – Relics original red vinyl Japan LP with obi

Offered for sale is an original Japanese red vinyl pressing of Relics by Pink Floyd, including the original obi.

This copy features a different cover from the U.S. release and a gatefold cover that was unique to Japan.

About this copy: This copy of Relics is a 1971 Japanese pressing on the Odeon label, pressed on “Everclean” red vinyl.

The gatefold cover is M- with a small corner dent. The pink “Rock Now” obi is VG++,with slight foxing. The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag,) is still attached.

The booklet is M-.

The red vinyl disc is VG++ and close to M-, with a couple of very light scuffs and a few spindle marks on the label.

A beautiful copy of a terrific record.

Background: Relics is often an afterthought when thinking about Pink Floyd’s catalog, but the compilation, released in 1971, offers some nice tracks from the band’s early career, as well as a couple of songs (“Paint Box” and “Biding My Time”) that aren’t otherwise available on U.S. albums.

Since Relics is a compilation and not a regular studio album, it tends to be overlooked when thought of as one of Pink Floyd’s better releases. It might not be regarded as a classic psychedelic masterpiece in the manner of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and it certainly won’t ever achieve the multiple platinum status of Dark Side of the Moon, but it’s a pretty good place to start with the band’s early catalog. A little bit of everything that made early Pink Floyd can be found here. Without a doubt, the disc is an essential part of the band’s discography, not to be disregarded due to its overlap with studio album material.

Background: Released in 1972, Obscured by Clouds was the seventh studio album by Pink Floyd.

The album reached #6 on the UK charts and #46 on the U.S. charts which was then the band’s highest-charting album in the U.S.

Obscured by Clouds is the soundtrack to the Barbet Schroeder film La Vallée, and it plays that way. Of course, it’s possible to make the argument that Pink Floyd’s music of the early ’70s usually played as mood music, similar to film music, but it had structure and a progression. Here, the instrumentals float pleasantly, filled with interesting textures, yet they never seem to have much of a purpose. Often, they seem quite tied to their time, either in their spaciness or in the pastoral folkiness, two qualities that are better brought out on the full-fledged songs interspersed throughout the record.

Background: Meddle is the sixth studio album by Pink Floyd, originally released in October, 1971. The album was the second one after Atom Heart Mother to include a side-long track, “Echoes.”

The album reached #3 on the UK charts, but only reached #70 in the U.S. Due to increased sales after the success of Dark Side of the Moon, the album was eventually certified two times platinum in the U.S.

A single, “One of These Days,” failed to reach the U.S. charts.

Offered for sale is a 1974 Japanese black vinyl pressing of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, including the original obi and lyric insert.

About this copy: This copy of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is a 1974 Japanese pressing on the Odeon label of an album that was originally released in 1967.

All copies of this pressing were issued on black vinyl.

The cover is VG++, and very close to M-, with a bit of minor wear on the corners.

The obi is VG+, with moderate foxing and some discoloration from age, but no tears.

The disc is VG+, with a couple of light marks on each side and many spindle marks on the labels. It’s a fairly clean disc that plays well.

A nice copy of a fairly scarce Pink Floyd LP.

Background: The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, released in 1967, was the first LP from Pink Floyd and the only album by the band to predominantly feature founding member Syd Barrett.

In Japan, the album was issued on six different occasions, and each was available only for a short period of time:

1970 – Pink “Rock Now!” obi with Odeon catalog number OP-80281 and ¥2000 price
1974 – Pink “Rock Now! obi with Odeon catalog number OP-80281 and ¥2200 price

The 1967 and 1970 issues were available on red vinyl, though nearly all copies of the 1970 release were black. The red version is one of the world’s rarest Pink Floyd LPs.

The Japanese pressing of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn features the UK track lineup, including “Flaming,” “Astronomy Domine,” and “Bike,” which were all removed from the LP for the U.S. release. Unlike the UK and U.S. issues, all Japanese pressings of the album have been in stereo.

The Japanese pressing also includes an extra track, “See Emily Play,” which had previously been released as a single.

This copy was pressed on “Everclean” red vinyl and includes a gatefold cover that was not included on the original 1969 issue.

Background: Released in 1969, More was the third album by Pink Floyd and the first without founder Syd Barrett.

The album reached #153 on the U.S. album charts.

Commissioned as a soundtrack to the seldom-seen French hippie movie of the same name, More was a Pink Floyd album in its own right, reaching the Top Ten in Britain… Several of the tracks are pleasantly inconsequential, but this record does include some strong compositions, especially “Cymbaline,” “Green Is the Colour,” and “The Nile Song.” All of these developed into stronger pieces in live performances, and better, high-quality versions are available on numerous bootlegs.

As with most albums in Japan, More was released multiple times, with multiple catalog numbers, multiple obis, and on both black and red vinyl. The first issue was pressed on red vinyl and had a single pocket cover and a now-impossibly-hard-to-find “New Rock” obi; the second issue had a gatefold cover and was pressed on both red and black vinyl with a black obi with orange print. Later issues were pressed on black vinyl only and had an obi that was unique to that particular reissue.

The first issue is extraordinarily rare and rarely turns up for sale. The second issue, which came out the same year as the first one, was more successful in the Japanese market, but has become much harder to find in recent years, especially in good condition.

A hard to find pressing of a great album by an iconic band.

Background: Released in 1968, A Saucerful of Secrets was the second album by Pink Floyd, the first to include guitarist/singer David Gilmour, and the last to include founder/guitarist/singer Syd Barrett.

The album reached #9 on the UK charts but only reached #158 on the U.S. charts.

Allmusic.com gave A Saucerful of Secrets a 3 1/2 star review:

A transitional album on which the band moved from Syd Barrett’s relatively concise and vivid songs to spacy, ethereal material with lengthy instrumental passages. Barrett’s influence is still felt (he actually did manage to contribute one track, the jovial “Jugband Blues”), and much of the material retains a gentle, fairy-tale ambience.

Pink Floyd – Westwood One in Concert 1988 live 2 LP radio show

Offered for sale is a 2LP live promotional radio show by Pink Floyd in the Westwood One In Concert series, broadcast in 1988.

Note: This material was originally recorded by the BBC in 1970-1971. While the material on these discs has been widely bootlegged, this show was the source material for those bootlegs.

About this copy: This copy of Westwood One in Concert is show number 88-10, intended to be broadcast the week of May 23, 1988.

This show features material from a 1970 and 1971 live recordings made in Britain by the BBC, and is complete with commercials as originally broadcast.

The cover is a generic black cover, and is M-. The cue sheet is a photocopy

Side one is VG++, with a light mark through the first track. Sides two, three and four are M-. There is some sticker residue on the side two label.

A nice copy of a very rare Pink Floyd radio show.

Background: Westwood One in Concert was a long running syndicated American radio show that featured popular groups recorded live in concert.

This particular show was recorded in 1970 and 1971, but broadcast in 1988, and featured the following tracks by Pink Floyd:

Pink Floyd (Kate Bush) Harvest Sampler 1978 promo-only U.S. LP with rare Pink Floyd track

Offered for sale is a copy of Harvest Sampler, a U.S. LP issued only for promotional use.

This LP includes “Point Me at the Sky” by Pink Floyd, which has not appeared on any other U.S. LP and “The Man With a Child in His Eyes” by Kate Bush.

About this copy: The cover is M-. The disc is M- and may be unplayed. Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a rare promotional sampler.

Background: Harvest Records was a relatively short-lived label, created as a spinoff of EMI in Britain with the intention of showcasing progressive rock artists. The label wasn’t overly successful, aside from Pink Floyd, so in 1978, the label released a promo-only LP called Harvest Sampler to radio stations in the U.S. in order to inspire airplay and (hopefully) increase sales.

While the album included primarily album tracks by then-current artists on the label, the LP also included a rare track, “Point Me at the Sky,” by Pink Floyd, who at that time were no longer with the label.

“Point Me at the Sky” was the band’s fifth single in the UK, where it did not chart. The song was not released as a single in the U.S.

Not only was “Point Me at the Sky” not released as a single in the United States, it has never been included on any commercially released album in LP form in the U.S., either. This album is the only American vinyl release to include the song.

The version of the song on Harvest Sampler is a rechanneled stereo version created from the original mono mix.

In addition to the Pink Floyd, track, the album is also of note to Kate Bush collectors, as it includes “The Man With a Child in His Eyes” from her then-new Kick Inside album.
