Beatles – Yellow Submarine 1982 Japan red vinyl mono LP with obi

beatles yellow submarine japan red vinyl mono lp

Offered for sale is a limited edition red vinyl mono Japanese pressing of Yellow Submarine by the Beatles, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Yellow Submarine is a 1982 pressing on the EMI/Odeon label.

The cover is VG+ with no wear, but with moderate foxing on the front and back .

The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The red vinyl disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce Beatles LP.

Background: In the 1960s, most Japanese LPs were issued in stereo only, so most Japanese buyers never had the opportunity to hear the original mono mixes of most of the Beatles songs.

In 1982, EMI records released limited edition red vinyl pressings in mono of all of the Beatles albums from Please Please Me through Yellow Submarine.

Released in 1969, Yellow Submarine was the tenth studio album by the Beatles.

The album reached #3 on the UK charts and #2 on the U.S. charts.

Allmusic.com gave Yellow Submarine a 3 star review:

The only Beatles album that could really be classified as inessential, mostly because it wasn’t really a proper album at all, but a soundtrack that only utilized four new Beatles songs….. What is here, however, is a good enough reason for owning the record, though nothing rates it as anything near a high-priority purchase. The album would have been far better value if it had been released as a four-song EP (an idea the Beatles even considered at one point, with the addition of a bonus track in “Across the Universe” but ultimately discarded).

A beautiful copy of a rare Ozzy Osbourne LP, as most copies were sold on compact disc when the album was new.

The album reached #13 on the U.S. album chart and #23 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave No Rest for the Wicked a 4 star review:

Things start to improve for Ozzy on No Rest for the Wicked, as Zakk Wylde replaces Jake E. Lee on guitar and Osbourne comes up with his best set since 1983. Again, it’s not quite up to the level of excellence his Blizzard of Ozz band achieved, but Osbourne sounds somewhat rejuvenated, and Wylde is a more consistently interesting guitarist than Lee.

A nice copy of a classic LP.

The album reached #11 on the U.S. album charts and has since sold more than nine million copies.

Allmusic.com gave Toys in the Attic a 5 star review:

After nearly getting off the ground with Get Your Wings, Aerosmith finally perfected their mix of Stonesy raunch and Zeppelin-esque riffing with their third album, Toys in the Attic. The success of the album derives from a combination of an increased sense of songwriting skills and purpose. Not only does Joe Perry turn out indelible riffs like “Walk This Way,” “Toys in the Attic,” and “Sweet Emotion,” but Steven Tyler has fully embraced sleaziness as his artistic muse. …. Aerosmith was a gritty, street-wise hard rock band who played their blues as blooze and were in it for a good time; Toys in the Attic crystallizes that attitude.

This pressing of the LP does not have a gatefold cover.

The cover is VG++ and close to M- with slight corner wear.  The obi is VG+ with some folds on the back.  The insert is VG+ with some discoloration from age.

The disc is M- with one spindle mark on each label and no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a rare Steely Dan LP.

Background: Released in 1974, Pretzel Logic was the third album by Steely Dan.

The album reached #8 on the U.S. album chart, helped by the #4 single, “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number.”

Allmusic.com gave Pretzel Logic a 5 star review:

Countdown to Ecstasy wasn’t half the hit that Can’t Buy a Thrill was, and Steely Dan responded by trimming the lengthy instrumental jams that were scattered across Countdown and concentrating on concise songs for Pretzel Logic. While the shorter songs usually indicate a tendency toward pop conventions, that’s not the case with Pretzel Logic. Instead of relying on easy hooks, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen assembled their most complex and cynical set of songs to date. Dense with harmonics, countermelodies, and bop phrasing, Pretzel Logic is vibrant with unpredictable musical juxtapositions and snide, but very funny, wordplay. … Steely Dan made more accomplished albums than Pretzel Logic, but they never made a better one.

Steely Dan – The Royal Scam 1980 Japan LP with obi

steely dan the royal scam japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of The Royal Scam by Steely Dan, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of The Royal Scam is a 1980 pressing on the MCA label of an album that was originally released in 1976.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.   The lyric insert is M-.

The disc is M- with one or two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of one of the harder to find Steely Dan LPs from Japan.

Background:  The Royal Scam, issued in 1976, was Steely Dan’s fifth studio album, and peaked at #15 on the Billboard album charts. The two singles, “Kid Charlemagne” and “The Fez,” reached #82 and #59 on the U.S. charts, respectively.

Allmusic.com gave The Royal Scam a 4 1/2 star review:

The Royal Scam is the first Steely Dan record that doesn’t exhibit significant musical progress from its predecessor, but that doesn’t mean the album is any less interesting. The cynicism that was suppressed on Katy Lied comes roaring to the surface on The Royal Scam — not only are the lyrics bitter and snide, but the music is terse, broken, and weary. …the best songs on The Royal Scam, like the sneering “Kid Charlemagne” and “Sign in Stranger,” rank as genuine Steely Dan classics.

Grand Funk Railroad – E Pluribus Funk 1971 Japan red vinyl LP

grand funk e pluribus funk red vinyl japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese red vinyl pressing of E Pluribus Funk by Grand Funk Railroad, including the round cover, lyric insert, and backing card.

About this copy: This copy of E Pluribus Funk is a 1971Japanese pressing on the Capitol label.

This LP was a strange one, as the cover was round, rather than square.  The Japanese issue used round covers that were imported from the United States, with a sticker added to the back that said “Made in Japan.”

The package included a round lyric insert with lyrics in English and a square 12″x12″ (30×30 cm) posterboard insert with the lyrics in Japanese.

All of this was packaged in a plastic sleeve that had a 4″ silver sticker on it that listed the song titles (in Japanese) and the price.  This sticker was used in place of an obi.

The cover is VG++ and close to M- with a small tear where a piece of cellophane tape was removed.  This tape was applied at the factory to seal the cover.

The cardboard Japanese lyric insert is VG++ with slight discoloration from age.  The round English lyric insert is M-.

The outer bag and price sticker are missing.

The red vinyl disc is VG+ with a couple of light marks on each side and a number of spindle marks on the labels.  It’s a fairly clean disc that should play well.

A nice copy of a rare Grand Funk LP.

Background: Released in late 1971, E Pluribus Funk was the fifth studio album by Grand Funk Railroad.  The LP reached #5 on the U.S. album charts and was certified platinum by the RIAA.

Allmusic.com gave E Pluribus Funk this review:

The album, made by a band by now popular enough to sell out Shea Stadium (depicted on the back of the album, its cover designed to look like a silver coin), consisted of a series of simple rock tunes with lyrics devoted to the joys of music itself (“Footstompin’ Music”), social concerns generically expressed (“People, Let’s Stop the War,” “Save the Land”), and claims of romantic betrayal (“Upsetter,” “No Lies”). … Grand Funk were still primarily a live band, able to achieve intensity, but with little sense of the varying dynamics and musical textures that might make a studio album interesting to listen to beyond being a souvenir of their live show.

A nice copy of one of Robin Trower’s best-selling LPs and the only copy we’ve ever had for sale that included the poster.

Background:  Released in 1976, Robin Trower Live was Robin Trower’s first live album and it reached #10 on the U.S. album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Robin Trower Live a 4 1/2 star review:

An excellent recording of a superb 1975 stadium show in Sweden, Robin Trower’s Live album is a perfect snapshot of the guitar hero in his prime. The record also gives ample evidence of why the Robin Trower Band was one of the most successful live guitar rock acts of the ’70s, highlighting not only Trower’s virtuoso Stratocaster licks, but the soulful vocals of bassist James Dewar and the polyrhythmic drumming of Bill Lordan. … Although none of the performances stray too far from the songs’ studio versions, that fact is part of what makes this album interesting. Live shows the Robin Trower Band to be a quintessential no-frills blues-rock band, capable of kicking serious ass no matter what the setting.

The album reached #22 on the U.S. album chart and was certified platinum (but not “double platinum”) by the RIAA.

Allmusic.com gave Double Platinum a 4 1/2 star review:

Double Platinum is a double-album, 20-track collection that gathers all of Kiss’ biggest hits (“Rock and Roll All Nite,” “Beth,” “Detroit Rock City,” “Calling Dr. Love,” “Love Gun”), but what makes it an essential retrospective and introduction is that it doesn’t overlook key album tracks and concert favorites like “Cold Gin,” “Deuce,” “Black Diamond,” and “She.”

The white label promo disc is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a fairly scarce Boston LP, as most copies of the album were sold on compact disc when the album was first released.

Background: Released eight years after Don’t Look Back, Third Stage was the third album by Boston.

The album reached #1 in the U.S. and #37 in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Third Stage a 3 star review:

After rushing their second album Don’t Look Back, Boston took eight years to complete the album Third Stage. The long delay is even more surprising considering that their sound didn’t change at all; even though only songwriter/guitarist Tom Scholz and vocalist Brad Delp remained from the original lineup, they were the ones responsible for Boston’s sound. As such, it is difficult to avoid comparisons with their landmark debut. …This may be nostalgic pop rock of the ’80s, but casual listeners should start with their debut.

A nice copy of a terrific album that’s hard to find complete.

Background:  Tumbleweed Connection was Elton John’s third album (his second in the U.S.) and the album reached #5 on the U.S. album charts and #2 in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Tumbleweed Connection a rare 5 star review:

Instead of repeating the formula that made Elton John a success, John and Bernie Taupin attempted their most ambitious record to date for the follow-up to their breakthrough. A loose concept album about the American West, Tumbleweed Connection emphasized the pretensions that always lay beneath their songcraft. Half of the songs don’t follow conventional pop song structures; instead, they flow between verses and vague choruses. These experiments are remarkably successful, primarily because Taupin’s lyrics are evocative and John’s melodic sense is at its best.
