Bob Dylan – Bob Dylan still sealed 1965 U.S. stereo LP

bob dylan - bob dylan u.s. stereo lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. stereo pressing of Bob Dylan’s self-titled Bob Dylan LP.

While the shrink wrap has been removed, the record is still sealed in the original plastic inner sleeve.

About this copy: This copy of Bob Dylan is a 1965 pressing of an album that was originally released in 1962.

This is technically a third pressing, with 360° Sound on the labels written in white.

As the record is still sealed in the original inner sleeve, the disc is presumably new and unplayed.

The cover is M-.   The perforated seal on the inner sleeve is fully intact.

Stamper numbers:

Side 1: XSM 55621-1A
Side 2: XSM 55622-1L

An absolutely gorgeous copy of a classic Dylan LP, and one that’s quite hard to find in stereo as an early pressing.  It’s likely to be your final upgrade.

Background: Bob Dylan’s 1962 debut got the attention of a few critics, but didn’t do much in the way of sales until later in the decade when he became somewhat more famous.  The first album consisted mostly of cover tunes; it wasn’t until his next album, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, that he started to record mostly self-penned material.

Bob Dylan went almost unnoticed upon the original release in 1962, though it did reach #13 on the UK charts, likely after he had success with later efforts.

While this album has been available in stereo for decades, early stereo copies, such as this one, are actually considerably rarer than their mono counterparts.  In the mid-1960s, the vast majority of records sold were in mono, making this early stereo pressing somewhat scarce, particularly in this condition.

Allmusic.com gave Bob Dylan a 4 star review:

Bob Dylan’s first album is a lot like the debut albums by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones — a sterling effort, outclassing most, if not all, of what came before it in the genre, but similarly eclipsed by the artist’s own subsequent efforts. … Within a year of its release, Dylan, initially in tandem with young folk/protest singers like Peter, Paul & Mary and Phil Ochs, would alter the boundaries of that revival beyond recognition, but this album marked the pinnacle of that earlier phase, before it was overshadowed by this artist’s more ambitious subsequent work. In that regard, the two original songs here serve as the bridge between Dylan’s stylistic roots, as delineated on this album, and the more powerful and daringly original work that followed.

Marvelettes – The Marvelettes Sing original U.S. Tamla promotional LP

marvelettes - the marvelettes sing u.s. LP

Offered for sale is an original U.S. promotional copy of The Marvelettes Sing by the Marvelettes.

Note: This is a stock copy of the album with “D.J. COPY” rubber-stamped on both the cover and the side one label.  “Marvelettes” is misspelled as “Marveletts” on the front cover (but spelled correctly on the back cover and labels.

About this copy: This copy of The Marvelettes Sing is a 1962 U.S. mono pressing on the Tamla label (there was no stereo pressing.”

This album was a reissue of Smash Hits of 62′, which had been issued earlier in the year with a different cover.

The cover is VG+, with slight ring wear and some small tears near the bottom edge.  The seams are solid, with no splits.  “D.J. COPY” has been rubber stamped twice on the back cover and there are check marks in pencil next to the songs “Love Letters” and “The One Who Really Loves You.”

The original deep groove mono disc is  M-, with a couple of spindle marks on the labels and a couple of very faint sleeve scuffs.  The record appears to have been played just a couple of times.

“D.J. COPY” has been rubber stamped twice on the side one label.

An exceptionally nice copy of an album that is usually found in terrible condition.

Background: Released in 1962, The Marveletts Sing (originally titled Smash Hits of 62′” was the second album by the Marvelettes.

Chart information is unavailable, but the single, “Twistin’ Postman” reached #34 in the U.S. Top 40 chart and #13 on the U.S. R&B singles chart.

Allmusic.com gave The Marvelettes Sing this review:

There is a certain emphasis on “Twist” sides here, including a pleasing if unambitious rendition of Sam Cooke’s “Twistin’ the Night Away” — apart from the Supremes’ Sam Cooke tribute album of 1965, Motown didn’t give a lot of play to Cooke’s songs, so that makes this album a little more interesting than its music per se. …this is a fun record four decades on, more than a curio or a space-filler in their discography, and worth hearing more than once.

Phil Spector – Wall of Sound 1981 UK 9 LP box set with Crystals, Ronettes, etc.

phil spector - wall of sound uk LP box

This 1981 limited edition set includes Phil Spector-produced material by the Righteous Brothers, the Ronettes, the Crystals, Darlene Love, Bob B. Soxx, and more, with much of the material in stereo.

About this copy: This copy of Wall of Sound is a 1981 UK pressing, with eight of the albums on the Phil Spector International label and the ninth, the Righteous Brothers LP, on the Polydor label.

The box is VG+ with light general wear, but no tears or splits.

The nine LPs are M-; the discs all look unplayed.  Clean discs!

(Pictures shown of labels of only two of the nine albums.  Photos of the others available on request.)

A beautiful copy of a rare Phil Spector item.  We prefer this box set to the 1991 Back to Mono U.S. box set.

Spector, under his Phil Spector International label, reissued much of the material in the UK in the form of nine different LPs, which were issued both separately and in a limited edition box set.

The box contains Dion’s Born to Be With You, the Ronettes Presenting the Ronettes, Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans’ Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah and the Phil Spector Christmas Album in their entirety.  The other albums in the box set are compilations.

This 1963 mono LP was released only as a promotional item.  One side features pop songs by the group and the other side features commercials that they recorded for then-popular products.

About this copy: This copy of The Two Sides of the J’s With Jamie is a privately pressed 1963 U.S. LP with no label.

The cover is VG++ with faint general wear.

The disc is VG++ and close to M-, with a couple of minor scuffs on each side.

A nice copy of a rare album by the J’s With Jamie and the only copy we’ve ever seen.

Background: Released in 1963, The Two Sides of the J’s With Jamie was released by the group to promote their versatility to prospective business clients.

Tracks are:

Side one – Commercials for:

  • Baby Won’t You Please Come Home
  • My Cigarette and I
  • A Lot of Livin’ to Do
  • Bewitched
  • Little Boy Blue

While the group isn’t all that well known by name, they recorded hundreds of commercials for both radio and television in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

They released only four albums – two under the name of “The J’s With Jamie” and two under the name of “Jamie With the J Silvia Singers.”  They also released a lot of non-album singles.

None of their albums charted, though their non-LP single, “Yoshiko” is quite collectible.

Led Zeppelin – IV 1971 Japan test pressing LP with obi and star sticker

led zeppelin - IV japan test pressing lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese test pressing of Led Zeppelin’s untitled fourth album, also known as Led Zeppelin IV, including the original obi and very rare “star” gift sticker.

Note: These test pressings were sent to radio stations and stores in advance of the album’s release to help promote it.

About this copy: This copy of Led Zeppelin IV is the first Japanese issue, released in 1971 with the “star” or “Sound Sound Rock Age 7” obi.  This obi was only available for a few months and was changed shortly after the album’s original release.

This set includes the original obi, lyric insert, and custom inner sleeve that contained the lyrics to “Stairway to Heaven.”

Also included is the rare star-shaped sticker that was intended to be used when giving the album as a gift.  This sticker is almost always missing; this is the only copy we’ve ever seen that included one.

The cover is VG++ and close to M-, with trace corner wear and faint wear on the inside of the cover.  The obi is VG++, with trace wear on the back side, but no tears.  The “hojyuhyo,” or reorder tag, is still attached.

The star sticker is M- with no tears or writing.

The custom inner sleeve is M-.  The lyric insert is VG+, with slight fading, but no tears or other issues.

The test pressing disc is VG on side one, with a couple of light scratches through the first track and a few sleeve scuffs.  Side two is VG+ with some slight scuffing from the original heavy paper inner sleeve.  It’s a clean disc that plays well with a bit of surface noise.

The label is plain white, aside from the catalog number and the word “sample,” printed in Japanese.

A nice copy of an ultra-rare Led Zeppelin LP.

Background: I’m not sure how much we need to elaborate about Led Zeppelin IV.   The album, which included “Black Dog,” “Rock and Roll,” and “Stairway to Heaven,” reached #1 on the UK charts and #2 on the U.S. charts, where it has since sold more than 23 million copies.

Allmusic.com gave Led Zeppelin IV a 5 star review:

Encompassing heavy metal, folk, pure rock & roll, and blues, Led Zeppelin’s untitled fourth album is a monolithic record, defining not only Led Zeppelin but the sound and style of ’70s hard rock. Expanding on the breakthroughs of III, Zeppelin fuse their majestic hard rock with a mystical, rural English folk that gives the record an epic scope. … “Going to California” is the group’s best folk song, and the rockers are endlessly inventive, whether it’s the complex, multi-layered “Black Dog,” the pounding hippie satire “Misty Mountain Hop,” or the funky riffs of “Four Sticks.” But the closer, “When the Levee Breaks,” is the one song truly equal to “Stairway,” helping give IV the feeling of an epic. An apocalyptic slice of urban blues, “When the Levee Breaks” is as forceful and frightening as Zeppelin ever got, and its seismic rhythms and layered dynamics illustrate why none of their imitators could ever equal them.

Moby Grape – Moby Grape 1970 U.S. stereo LP with poster and uncensored cover

moby grape - moby grape u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a U.S. stereo pressing of Moby Grape, the self-titled debut by Moby Grape, including the poster and the uncensored cover.

About this copy: This copy of Moby Grape is a 1970 pressing on the Columbia label of an album that was originally released in 1967.  This copy has labels with the word “Columbia” around the perimeter, and not the earlier “360° Sound” label.

This copy features the original “uncensored” cover, where Don Stevenson is shown making an obscene gesture.  This was removed on later versions of the cover.    The included poster is the censored version, with the “finger” airbrushed out.

The cover still has the original shrink wrap and is VG++ with slight wear at the mouth.

The poster is M- with no rips, tears, or holes.

The disc is M- with a couple of very faint sleeve scuffs.  It’s a clean disc that’s had little play.

A nice copy of an album that rarely turns up complete.

Background: Released in June 1967, Moby Grape was the first album by the band of the same name.  The album was released in both stereo and mono in the United States, though the mono pressings were in print for less than a year before Columbia Records stopped pressing albums in mono.

The original album cover art featured Don Stevenson making an obscene gesture; this only appeared on the first pressings of the cover (and original versions of the included poster.)

The album reached #24 on the U.S. album charts.

Columbia was so excited about the commercial prospects of this album that they released five singles simultaneously.  This had the unfortunate result of having all of the songs compete against each other for airplay, and as a result, none of them became a hit.

Allmusic.com gave Moby Grape a 5 star review:

Moby Grape’s career was a long, sad series of minor disasters, in which nearly anything that could have gone wrong did (poor handling by their record company, a variety of legal problems, a truly regrettable deal with their manager, creative and personal differences among the bandmembers, and the tragic breakdown of guitarist and songwriter Skip Spence), but their self-titled debut album was their one moment of unqualified triumph. Moby Grape is one of the finest (perhaps the finest) album to come out of the San Francisco psychedelic scene, brimming with great songs and fresh ideas while blessedly avoiding the pitfalls that pockmarked the work of their contemporaries — no long, unfocused jams, no self-indulgent philosophy, and no attempts to sonically re-create the sound of an acid trip. …Moby Grape is as refreshing today as it was upon first release, and if fate prevented the group from making a follow-up that was as consistently strong, for one brief shining moment Moby Grape proved to the world they were one of America’s great bands. While history remembers the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane as being more important, the truth is neither group ever made an album quite this good.

Beverly Kenney – Like Yesterday Japan LP with obi

beverly kenney - like yesterday japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Like Yesterday by Beverly Kenney, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Like Yesterday is a 1996 mono pressing on the Decca label of an album that was originally released in 1999.

The cover, obi, insert and disc are all M-.  The record may be unplayed.  Beautiful copy!

A gorgeous copy of a rare (and pretty good) Jazz LP.

Background: Released in 1959, Like Yesterday was the fifth album by Jazz singer Beverly Kenney.

Allmusic.com gave Like Yesterday a 4 1/2 star review:

With Like Yesterday, Beverly Kenney updates a series of pop standards with a formula rooted in the archly modern sound of Eisenhower-era jazz. Experienced decades after the fact, the album boasts a timelessness that renders its basic conceits of time and place moot, especially given that the fierce intelligence of Kenney’s phrasing and the sultry depth of her vocals contrast so sharply with the Doris Day stereotypes associated with the period in question. Backed by a small but exemplary supporting cast including guitarist Chuck Wayne and reedist Jerome Richardson, Kenney eschews embellishment and excess in favor of lean, taut arrangements that emphasize emotional context, Her readings of familiar songs like “More Than You Know” and “A Sunday Kind of Love” possess a startling intimacy.

Index – The Index 1980’s U.S. psych Voxx LP

the index - the index u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a U.S. copy of The Index, the first album by the Michigan garage/psych band of the same name.

About this copy: This copy of The Index is a 1984 reissue on Voxx Records of an album that was originally issued as a private pressing of 150 copies in 1968.

The cover is M- and still has the original shrink wrap.  The disc is M- with a couple of faint sleeve scuffs.

A nice copy of a scarce, raw psych classic that sells for thousands of dollars as an original pressing.

Background: Released in 1968, The Index, (also known as the “black album,”) was the first of two albums by the band of the same name from Grosse Pointe, Michigan.

The album was reportedly pressed in an edition of 150 copies that were mostly given to friends.

The album has achieved a cult following for its raw, unpolished sound.

Allmusic.com gave The Index a 4 star review:

A haunting psychedelic oddity that’s sort of a timewarp meeting place between the Byrds, Dick Dale, Hendrix, and the Velvet Underground. With their raw garage attack and over-the-top enthusiasm for feedback and wah-wah, the Index were very much of their time; with their brooding minimalism and savage, almost experimental electric guitar electronics, they sound oddly contemporary. Highlighted by the greatest cover of “Eight Miles High” ever attempted, and the closing instrumental bash of “Feedback,” which is fierce psychedelic guitar distortion pushed to its white-noise limit.

Index – The Index (second album) 1990’s U.S. psych LP

the index - the index u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a U.S. copy of The Index, the second album by the Michigan garage/psych band of the same name.

About this copy: This copy of The Index is a 1991 reissue on Sears Records of an album that was originally issued as a private pressing of 200 copies in 1968.

The cover is M-.  The disc is M- with a couple of faint sleeve scuffs.

A nice copy of a scarce, raw psych classic that sells for thousands of dollars as an original pressing.

Background: Released in 1968, The Index, (also known as the “red album,”) was the second of two albums by the band of the same name from Grosse Pointe, Michigan.

The album was reportedly pressed in an edition of 200 copies that were mostly given to friends.

The album has achieved a cult following for its raw, unpolished sound.

Allmusic.com gave The Index a 3 star review:

Index took a softer, though equally moody, approach for their second album (which was untitled). The squalling psychedelic workouts are largely pushed aside by pensive ballads. The muddy, muffled acoustics and the brooding, solipsistic compositions create a feeling of unbearable melancholy, akin to stranded astronauts singing to themselves while looking at their planetary homes from afar, or a seriously acid-damaged take on the early Bee Gees (who in fact are covered here not once, but twice).
