Roxy Music – For Your Pleasure sealed 1973 U.S. white label promotional LP

roxy music - for your pleasure u.s. promo lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed white label promotional copy of For Your Pleasure, the second LP by Roxy Music.

This is the first issue on the Reprise label with a gatefold cover and includes a bio sheet that was issued only with promo copies.

About this copy: This copy of For Your Pleasure is an original 1973 pressing on the Reprise label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact except for a 2 inch (5 cm) tear at the center of the bottom edge.

There is a sticker that says, “Promotional Copy Not for Sale” attached to the cover.

There is a band biography sheet under the shrink wrap on the back cover.  These biography sheets were only issued with promotional copies of the album, so the disc should have white promotional labels as shown on the third photo.

A beautiful copy of a very rare Roxy Music LP and likely your final upgrade.

Background: Released in 1973, For Your Pleasure was the second album by Roxy Music.

The album reached #193 on the U.S. charts, and #4 on the UK charts.

Allmusic.com gave For Your Pleasure a 5 star review:

On Roxy Music’s debut, the tensions between Brian Eno and Bryan Ferry propelled their music to great, unexpected heights, and for most of the group’s second album, For Your Pleasure, the band equals, if not surpasses, those expectations. However, there are a handful of moments where those tensions become unbearable, as when Eno wants to move toward texture and Ferry wants to stay in more conventional rock territory; the nine-minute “The Bogus Man” captures such creative tensions perfectly, and it’s easy to see why Eno left the group after the album was completed. Still, those differences result in yet another extraordinary record from Roxy Music, one that demonstrates even more clearly than the debut how avant-garde ideas can flourish in a pop setting.

Who – My Generation sealed U.S. stereo LP

the who - my generation u.s. stereo lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. (rechanneled) stereo pressing of My Generation, the debut LP from The Who.

About this copy: This copy of My Generation is a still sealed early U.S. pressing on the Decca label of an album that was first released in 1965. This pressing likely dates from 1969-1971.

This is the third U.S. pressing, without the “Decca Full Stereo” banner on the back cover and without the word “Decca” printed above the text, “Decca Stereo records can be safely played on today’s monaural phonographs,” which was found on 1967-1968 pressings.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is largely intact, with no rips, tears, or holes, except a tiny break in the lower right hand corner and in the upper right hand corner, which has been clipped.

A beautiful copy of an album that is usually found in poor condition and the first sealed copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: My Generation (released as The Who Sings My Generation in the U.S.) is regarded as one of the most significant debut albums in rock history.  While the album failed to make the charts in the United States when released in 1966, the 1965 UK release reached #5 on the UK charts.

The UK version of the album included a track, “I’m a Man,” that was not included on the U.S. or Japanese release (It was replaced by “Instant Party.”)

Allmusic.com gave My Generation a rare 5 star review:

An explosive debut, and the hardest mod pop recorded by anyone. At the time of its release, it also had the most ferociously powerful guitars and drums yet captured on a rock record. Pete Townshend’s exhilarating chord crunches and guitar distortions threaten to leap off the grooves on “My Generation” and “Out in the Street”; Keith Moon attacks the drums with a lightning, ruthless finesse throughout. … While the execution was sometimes crude, and the songwriting not as sophisticated as it would shortly become, the Who never surpassed the pure energy level of this record.

Metallica – Ride the Lightning sealed U.S. half speed mastered 45 RPM 2 LP set

metallica -ride the lightning u.s. 45 rpm 2 LP set

Offered for sale is a still sealed limited edition half speed mastered 2 LP edition of Ride the Lightning by Metallica.

This version was cut at 45 RPM and pressed on 180 gram vinyl for optimal sound quality.

About this copy: This copy of Ride the Lightning is a 2008 pressing on the Warner Brothers label.

As the album is still sealed, the records are presumably new and unplayed.

The loose wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.  There is a hype sticker on the wrap that says, “180 Gram Audiophile Quality Vinyl.  Half Speed Mastered at Mobile Fidelity.  45 RPM from the original analog master tapes.  2 Disc set.”

There is also a wraparound banner, or “obi,” that says, “Metallica – Louder – Faster – Heavier – 45 RPM Series – Metallica Like You’ve Never Heard Them Before…”

A beautiful (and great-sounding) copy of a now-rare Metallica LP and the only copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: Starting in 2008, Warner Brothers Records reissued the entire Metallica catalog as a series of high-quality “audiophile” pressings, with each title pressed on 180 gram vinyl, and cut at 45 RPM using Mobile Fidelity’s half speed mastering technology.

The resulting LPs sounded great, but were a bit expensive and didn’t stay in print very long and are all hard to find today.

Released in 1984, Ride the Lightning was the second album by Metallica.  While the album peaked at #48 on the U.S. album charts, the album has since sold more than six million copies.

Allmusic.com gave Ride the Lightning a 5 star review:

Kill ‘Em All may have revitalized heavy metal’s underground, but Ride the Lightning was even more stunning, exhibiting staggering musical growth and boldly charting new directions that would affect heavy metal for years to come. Incredibly ambitious for a one-year-later sophomore effort, Ride the Lightning finds Metallica aggressively expanding their compositional technique and range of expression. Every track tries something new, and every musical experiment succeeds mightily. … Basically, in a nutshell, Metallica sounded like they could do anything. Heavy metal hadn’t seen this kind of ambition since Judas Priest’s late-’70s classics, and Ride the Lightning effectively rewrote the rule book for a generation of thrashers. If Kill ‘Em All was the manifesto, Ride the Lightning was the revolution itself.

David Bowie – Pin Ups sealed clear vinyl 1990 U.S. Ryko LP

david bowie - pinups u.s. ryko lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed numbered clear vinyl U.S. pressing of Pin Ups by David Bowie, including 2 bonus tracks and a gatefold cover.

This copy is number 1614 of an unknown number of copies.

About this copy: This copy of Pin Ups is a 1990 pressing on the Ryko label, issued as part of their short-lived Ryko Analogue series.

All albums in the series were pressed on clear vinyl and were direct metal mastered (DMM.)

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact, with no rips, tears or holes.

A beautiful copy of a rare David Bowie LP, as this album sold poorly on vinyl when first released.

Background: In the late 1980s, the small Ryko label earned the right to release David Bowie’s back catalog on compact disc.  The discs, which were well mastered and which included bonus tracks, were well-received by the public, and this inspired Ryko to produce them on vinyl, as well.

The “Ryko Analogue” series didn’t last long, as stores weren’t interested in stocking vinyl LPs at that time, and the David Bowie albums in that short-lived series are quite rare.

Pin Ups includes 2 bonus tracks:

  • Growin’ Up (unreleased track from the album sessions
  • Point of Amsterdam (the B-side of the “Sorrow” single

Released in 1973, Pin Ups was the seventh studio album by David Bowie and was unusual in that it was an entire album of covering songs by other artists, many of them songs that were then relatively unknown in the United States.

The album reached #1 in the UK and #23 on the U.S. charts.

Allmusic.com gave Pin Ups a 3 star review:

Pin Ups was an artistic statement, of sorts, with some thought behind it, rather than just a quick album of oldies covers to buy some time, as it was often dismissed as being. In the broader context of Bowie’s career, Pin Ups was more than an anomaly — it marked the swan song for the Spiders from Mars and something of an interlude between the first and second phases of his international career; the next, beginning with Diamond Dogs, would be a break from his glam rock phase, going off in new directions. It’s not a bad bridge between the two, and it has endured across the decades.

Simon & Garfunkel – The Graduate sealed Japan LP with obi

Offered for sale is a still sealed Japanese  copy of the soundtrack to The Graduate, featuring songs by Simon & Garfunkel, and including the original “cap” obi and a Japan-only gatefold cover.

About this copy: This copy of The Graduate is a 1973 pressing on the CBS/Sony label of an album that was originally released in 1968.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.

An absolutely gorgeous copy of a scarce Simon & Garfunkel album.

Background: Released in 1968, the soundtrack to The Graduate featured songs by Simon & Garfunkel.

The album reached #1 on the U.S. album charts.

Allmusic.com gave The Graduate a 3 star review:

The soundtrack to Mike Nichols’ The Graduate remains a key musical document of the late ’60s, although truth be told, its impact was much less artistic than commercial (and, for that matter, more negative than positive). With the exception of its centerpiece track, the elegiac and oft-quoted “Mrs. Robinson” — which only appears here as a pair of fragments — the Simon & Garfunkel songs that comprise much of the record (a series of Dave Grusin instrumentals round it out) appeared on the duo’s two preceding LPs; Nichols’ masterstroke was to transplant those songs into his film, where they not only meshed perfectly with the story’s themes of youthful rebellion and alienation (and the inner life of the central character, Dustin Hoffman’s Benjamin Braddock) but also heralded a new era in movie music centered around the appropriation of past pop hits, a marketing gimmick that grew exponentially in the years to follow. The Graduate soundtrack, then, merits the dubious honor of being the earliest and one of the most successful Hollywood repackagings of “found” pop songs, a formula essentially based around coercing fans to purchase

Ray Charles – The Great Ray Charles sealed original mono LP

ray charles - the great ray charles u.s. mono lp

Offered for sale is an early, and possibly original, still sealed U.S. mono pressing of the 1957 LP The Great Ray Charles by Ray Charles.

About this copy: This copy of The Great Ray Charles is a U.S. pressing on the Atlantic label.

As the album is sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The album is sealed in a loose wrap, as was done on early Atlantic issues.

The label variation is unknown.  This may be an original 1957 issue on the original black label, but it could also be on the later, short-lived red and purple “white fan” label that was used from 1960-1962.

This is a thick, fairly heavy pressing, so it’s likely a black label original.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.  There is a small amount of foxing in the lower left hand corner of the back cover.  Aside from that, this LP is in nearly perfect condition.

An amazing copy of a terrific LP that is usually found in terrible condition.

Background: The Great Ray Charles was the second studio album by Ray Charles, and the first to be recorded as an album (his first LP was a collection of previously-released singles.)

Unlike most of Charles’ work, this LP is entirely instrumental.  The album was released in August 1957 in mono, and sometime in 1958 in stereo.

Allmusic.com gave The Great Ray Charles a 3 star review:

This set is rather unusual, for it is strictly instrumental, allowing Ray Charles a rare opportunity to be a jazz-oriented pianist. Two selections are with a trio (bassist Oscar Pettiford joins Charles on “Black Coffee”), while the other six are with a septet taken from his big band of the period. …Ray Charles should have recorded in this setting more often in his later years.

Ray Charles – The Great Hits of Ray Charles sealed original 1964 LP

ray charles - great hits u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed original U.S. copy of the 1966 LP The Great Hits of Ray Charles Recorded on 8-Track Stereo by Ray Charles.

About this copy: This copy of The Great Hits of Ray Charles is an original 1966 stereo pressing on the blue/green Atlantic label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact except for a small break in the upper left hand corner where there is a saw mark in the cover.

A nice copy of a terrific LP and a relatively scarce Ray Charles album.

Background: After Ray Charles left Atlantic for ABC Records in 1960, Atlantic issued a number of compilation albums over the next few years.

One of the more interesting ones was The Great Hits of Ray Charles Recorded on 8-Track Stereo, an album that was unusual at the time of release in that it was issued only in stereo.

The album was a compilation of tracks by Charles that Atlantic had recorded in stereo in the late 1950s but had, up until that time, issued only in mono.  Atlantic, while a small record company, had been early adopters of recording in stereo, recording in that format as early as 1952, long before stereo recordings had any commercial application.

This came in handy later in the decade when stereo records became practical, as the label had a lot of ready-to-release material available.

This LP gave listeners their first opportunity to hear “What’d I Say,” among others, in true stereo.

Ray Charles – The Genius of Ray Charles sealed 1959 mono LP

ray charles - the genius of ray charles U.S. lp

Offered for sale is an early, and possibly original, still sealed U.S. mono pressing of the 1959  LP The Genius of Ray Charles by Ray Charles.

About this copy: This copy of The Genius of Ray Charles is a U.S. pressing on the Atlantic label.

As the album is sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The album is sealed in a loose wrap, as was done on early Atlantic issues.

The label variation is unknown.  This may be an original 1959 issue on the original black label, but it could also be on the later, short-lived red and purple “white fan” label that was used from 1960-1962.

This is a thick, fairly heavy pressing, so it’s likely a black label original.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.  There are small (2″ or 5 cm on the top; 1″ or 3 cm on the bottom) splits on the top and bottom edges of the cover.

An amazing copy of a terrific LP that is usually found in terrible condition.

Background:  The Genius of Ray Charles, released in 1959, was the artist’s sixth LP.  This one favored big-band and string arrangements, rather than the jazz and soul of his earlier efforts.

Allmusic.com gave The Genius of Ray Charles a 4 1/2 star review:

Some players from Ray Charles’ big band are joined by many ringers from the Count Basie and Duke Ellington bands for the first half of this program, featuring Charles belting out six songs arranged by Quincy Jones. … Charles’ voice is heard throughout in peak form, giving soul to even the veteran standards.

Josef Krips/LSO – Beethoven 9th Symphony sealed Classic Records Clarity test pressing LP

josef krips - beethoven 9th symphony classic records test pressing lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed 200 gram Clarity vinyl test pressing of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, performed by Josef Krips and the London Symphony Orchestra, and pressed by Classic Records.

This album was originally available only in a box set that contained all nine of Beethoven’s symphonies and was not sold separately.

About this copy: This copy of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony is a 2009 test pressing by Classic Records, pressed on 200 gram clear “Clarity” vinyl.  This title is a reissue of an album that was originally released in 1960 on the Everest label.

As the album is sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.  The shrink wrap is fully intact with no rips or tears.

This album is packaged in a plain white cover, and we obtained it from someone formerly associated with the record company.

It appears that the cover was reused, as it has a sticker on the back side with printing that has been crossed out with a permanent marker.

There is a sticker attached to the front of the cover that says, “Classic Records 12/2009 SDBR 3065-9-200g Clarity A/B.”

The disc has a plain Classic Records label on one side; the label on the other side is blank.

A nice copy of a highly sought after classic title, and a hard one to find, as the box set sold quite poorly.

Background: Everest Records wasn’t a well-known label, even during its prime. The label specialized in classical recordings, and some of them are quite good and have long been sought out by audiophiles.

This recording of Beethoven’s 9 symphonies was released in 1960 as a complete box set, and the individual symphonies were also released separately.

Classic Records reissued the entire box set in 2008 or so and that box set is one of that label’s most difficult titles to find.  Classic Records did not release the individual symphonies separately; they are only available in the hard-to-find box set.

Jethro Tull – Aqualung still sealed Classic Record 200 gram test pressing LP

jethro tull - aqualung classic records test pressing lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed 200 gram test pressing of Aqualung by Jethro Tull, pressed by Classic Records.

About this copy: This copy of Aqualung is a 200 gram test pressing by Classic Records, pressed circa 2009.

This issue is an audiophile reissue of an album that was originally released in 1971.

This copy is pressed on black “Quiex” vinyl and has blank Classic Records labels.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The disc is packaged in a plain white cover.  There is a sticker on the cover that says, “Classic Records ILPS-9145-200g A/B CRWH.”

The loose wrap is fully intact, with no rips, tears or holes.

A beautiful copy of a rare Jethro Tull LP.

Background: Classic Records was a label that specialized in high quality, heavy-vinyl “audiophile” reissues of rock, Jazz, and classical LPs.

Their albums used high quality mastering from the original master tapes, and their albums were pressed on premium vinyl, with most of them being pressed on dead-quiet “Quiex” vinyl.

Released in 1971, Aqualung was the fourth studio album by Jethro Tull.  The album reached #4 on the UK charts and #7 in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave Aqualung a 4 1/2 star review:

The leap from 1970’s Benefit to the following year’s Aqualung is one of the most astonishing progressions in rock history. In the space of one album, Tull went from relatively unassuming electrified folk-rock to larger-than-life conceptual rock full of sophisticated compositions and complex, intellectual, lyrical constructs. While the leap to full-blown prog rock wouldn’t be taken until a year later on Thick as a Brick, the degree to which Tull upped the ante here is remarkable…. Varied but cohesive, Aqualung is widely regarded as Tull’s finest hour.
