Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon 1978 German SQ quadraphonic LP

pink floyd - the dark side of the moon german sq quadraphonic lp

Offered for sale is a  copy of the 1978 limited edition German SQ quadraphonic pressing of The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd.

Note: This album was not issued in quadraphonic in the United States on vinyl; the only U.S. quad release was on 8 track tape.  This quad LP can play on any turntable and features a distinctly different mix from the stereo pressing.

About this copy: This copy of The Dark Side of the Moon is a 1978 German pressing on the EMI/Harvest label.

The cover is VG , with slight edge and corner wear and a couple of small tears and spots on the back cover.  The original white poly-lined inner sleeve is M-.

This version of the album did not include inserts.

The SQ quadraphonic disc is M- with one or two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

Stamper numbers are:

Side one: 05 249 – Q – A – 1
Side two: 05 249 – Q – B – 1

A nice copy of an album that’s quite hard to find on vinyl as a quadraphonic pressing.

Background:  The Dark Side of the Moon was one of three Pink Floyd albums (along with Atom Heart Mother and Wish You Were Here) to be released in the 4 channel quadraphonic format.

While all three were released on vinyl in quad in various countries worldwide, only Wish You Were Here was issued on vinyl in the U.S. as a quadraphonic pressing.

The Dark Side of the Moon was issued in quad in the UK, Germany, Japan, and Australia on vinyl, but the U.S. issue was only released as an 8 track tape.

The Dark Side of the Moon was Pink Floyd’s eighth album and it’s the one that made them superstars. Reaching #1 in the U.S. and #2 in the UK, the album is one of the biggest selling albums in history.

While the album topped the U.S. charts for only one week, it spent 741 weeks in the U.S. top 200 – fifteen years.

Due to popularity with buyers, the album has been released in multiple limited editions around the world over the years, including several different colored vinyl pressings, quadraphonic pressings, and as a picture disc.

Allmusic.com gave The Dark Side of the Moon a rare 5 star review:

By condensing the sonic explorations of Meddle to actual songs and adding a lush, immaculate production to their trippiest instrumental sections, Pink Floyd inadvertently designed their commercial breakthrough with Dark Side of the Moon. …Pink Floyd may have better albums than Dark Side of the Moon, but no other record defines them quite as well as this one.

Pink Floyd – Atom Heart Mother 1974 Japan RM quadraphonic LP with obi

pink floyd atom heart mother japan rm quad lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese quadraphonic copy of Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd, including the original obi.

While this copy was mastered in RM quadraphonic (also known as QS), it will play on all stereo turntables and offers a different mix from the regular stereo release.

About this copy: This copy of Atom Heart Mother is an original 1974 pressing on the EMI/Odeon label.

The cover is VG++ and close to M- with a couple of foxing spots inside the gatefold cover and  trace corner wear.   The obi is VG++ with slight foxing, but no tears.

The 6 page lyric/liner note booklet (with information in both English and Japanese) is M-.  The single page insert about the RM Quadraphonic process is VG++ with a couple of minor foxing spots.

The black vinyl disc is M- with a few spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a rare Pink Floyd LP.

Background:  Released in 1970, Atom Heart Mother was the fifth album by Pink Floyd.

The album reached #1 on the UK charts, but peaked at #55 on the U.S. charts, making it what was then the highest-ever charting album in the U.S.

The album was one of three (along with The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here) to be remixed for quadraphonic sound, though the quad mix was not released on vinyl in the U.S.

It was, however, released in SQ quadraphonic in the UK and in RM (aka QS) quad in Japan.

The quad version of the album offers a different mix from the stereo version.

Allmusic.com gave Atom Heart Mother a 3 star review:

Appearing after the sprawling, unfocused double-album set Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother may boast more focus, even a concept, yet that doesn’t mean it’s more accessible. If anything, this is the most impenetrable album Pink Floyd released while on Harvest, which also makes it one of the most interesting of the era. Still, it may be an acquired taste even for fans, especially since it kicks off with a side-long, 23-minute extended orchestral piece that may not seem to head anywhere, but is often intriguing, more in what it suggests than what it achieves.

Pink Floyd – Live (aka Cymbaline) 1973 green/purple U.S. Trademark of Quality live 2 LP set

pink floyd live cymbaline tmoq lp

Offered for sale is a green vinyl and purple vinyl copy of the U.S. double live album Pink Floyd Live, also known as Cymbaline, by Pink Floyd, issued by the Trademark of Quality label.

Note: This LP is one of the hardest titles to find from the Trademark of Quality catalog, and this is one of the rarest color variations of this title.

About this copy:  This copy of Pink Floyd Live is a 1973 U.S.  mono pressing on the collectible Trademark of Quality label, issued on the “smoking pig” variation of the label.

The cover is VG- with general wear.  The entire top seam was split; this has been repaired.  We will include a new plain white cover for storing the discs.

The insert is an original; it has been glued to the front cover.  We don’t know if the cover has a stamped title under the insert or not.  A name has been written on both the cover and insert in ballpoint pen.

The purple disc is VG-, with a number of light marks on each side, but no heavy scratches.  The green disc is closer to VG+ with a number of light scuffs, but no significant marks.  All four sides have “Pink Floyd” written on the labels in ballpoint pen.

The discs play well with some surface noise.

A nice, if imperfect, copy of a very rare Pink Floyd LP and the only copy we’ve seen in more than 40 years of looking for one.  A mint copy of this would likely sell for $2000+.

Background: Released in 1973, but before the band became truly famous, Pink Floyd Live was the second Pink Floyd LP to be issued by the Trademark of Quality label.

The album had previously been issued on the small Dittoline label under the title Cymbaline, and it’s known by both titles in collector’s circles.  For some reason, production on this particular title was quite limited; it’s one of the rarest titles by any artist issued by the Trademark of Quality label.

Recorded (in mono) at the Santa Monica Civic Center in Santa Monica, California on October 23, 1970.  This is the same concert from which the live tracks “Embryo” and “Interstellar Overdrive” that appeared on the earlier Trademark of Quality LP Omayyad were sourced.

Tracks are:

  • Atom Heart Mother (Part 1)
  • Atom Heart Mother (Part 2)
  • Fat Old Sun (listed as “Sing to Me” on the insert)
  • Cymbaline
  • A Saucerful of Secrets

The custom inner sleeve is M-.  The insert is M-.  The postcard is M-.  The poster is M- with no rips, tears, or holes.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a classic LP that is almost never found complete.

Background: Released in 1975, Wish You Were Here was the ninth studio album by Pink Floyd.

The album reached #1 on the charts in the U.S. and the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Wish You Were Here a 5 star review:

Pink Floyd followed the commercial breakthrough of Dark Side of the Moon with Wish You Were Here, a loose concept album about and dedicated to their founding member Syd Barrett. The record unfolds gradually, as the jazzy textures of “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” reveal its melodic motif, and in its leisurely pace, the album shows itself to be a warmer record than its predecessor. Musically, it’s arguably even more impressive, showcasing the group’s interplay and David Gilmour’s solos in particular. And while it’s short on actual songs, the long, winding soundscapes are constantly enthralling.
