john coltrane - ballads japan promo lp

About this copy: This copy of Ballads is a 1976 Japanese pressing of an album that was originally released in 1963.

The gatefold cover is VG+, with slight edge and corner wear.  The obi is VG++ with slight wear at the top and bottom edges.  The “hojyuhyo,” or reorder tag, is still attached.  The insert is M-.

The disc is a promotional copy that says “sample” in Japanese above the title.  The disc is M- with a bit of foxing and a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific LP.

Background:  Originally released in 1963, Ballads was the fifth John Coltrane recording for Impulse! Records.

Allmusic.com gave Ballads a 4 star review:

…Ballads is … a perfectly fine album of Coltrane doing what he always did — exploring new avenues and modes in an inexhaustible search for personal and artistic enlightenment. With Ballads he looks into the warmer side of things, a path he would take with both Johnny Hartman (on John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman) and with Duke Ellington (on Duke Ellington and John Coltrane). Here he lays out for McCoy Tyner mostly, and the results positively shimmer at times. He’s not aggressive, and he’s not outwardly. Instead he’s introspective and at times even predictable, but that is precisely Ballads’ draw.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Works Japan 2 LP set with obi

emrson lake & palmer - works japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of the 2 LP set Works by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, including the original obi and insert.

About this copy: This copy of Works is an original 1977 pressing on the Atlantic label.

The cover is VG++ and close to M-, with slight corner and edge wear. The obi is VG++, with a tiny tear on the front.  The insert is M-.

The two discs are M- with a number of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean discs!

A nice  copy of a scarce Emerson, Lake & Palmer LP.

Background: Released in early 1977, Works was the fifth studio album by Emerson, Lake & Palmer.  The LP reached #9 on the UK charts and #12 in the U.S.

Works was a double album with the first three sides devoted to solo material, with each member getting a full side.  Side four had two tracks by the entire band.

Allmusic.com gave Works a 3 1/2 star review:

Though no one talked about it at the time of its release, this album reflected a growing split within the group. Originally, the trio’s members, tired of sublimating their musical identities within the context of ELP, each intended to do a solo album of his own. Reason prevailed, however, probably aided by the group’s awareness that the combined sales of the solo albums issued by the five members of Yes the previous year were a fraction of the sales of Yes’ most recent records. The result was this double LP; essentially three solo sides and one group side, it is the most complex and demanding of the group’s albums.

Focus – Moving Waves 1973 Japan LP with obi

focus - moving waves japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of Moving Waves by Focus, including the original obi.

This LP contains the band’s only U.S. hit, “Hocus Pocus.”

About this copy: This copy of Moving Waves is a 1973 pressing on the Polydor label.  The album was released in 1971 in Europe, but wasn’t released in Japan until 1973.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The “hojyuhyo,” or reorder tag, is still attached.

The lyric insert is M-, with a couple of minor foxing spots.

The disc is M- and may be unplayed.  There’s a bit of foxing on the labels.  Beautiful disc!

A gorgeous, and virtually new copy of a terrific album that is hard to find as a first pressing.

Background: Released in October, 1971, Moving Waves was the second album by the Dutch progressive rock band Focus.

The album reached #2 on the UK charts and #8 in the U.S., where “Hocus Pocus” reached #9 on the singles charts.

Allmusic.com gave Moving Waves a 4 star review:

The album that boosted Focus into at least semi-fame outside of continental Europe, Moving Waves blasts off with their hit single, “Hocus Pocus.” Built around a killer guitar hook by Jan Akkerman and a series of solo turns by the band, this instrumental replaced “Wipeout” as a staple of FM radio. The bizarrely hilarious vocal and accordion solos by Thijs van Leer — one of which absurdly concludes with rousing stadium cheers — have to be heard to be believed.

Metallica – Ride the Lightning sealed U.S. half speed mastered 45 RPM 2 LP set

metallica -ride the lightning u.s. 45 rpm 2 LP set

Offered for sale is a still sealed limited edition half speed mastered 2 LP edition of Ride the Lightning by Metallica.

This version was cut at 45 RPM and pressed on 180 gram vinyl for optimal sound quality.

About this copy: This copy of Ride the Lightning is a 2008 pressing on the Warner Brothers label.

As the album is still sealed, the records are presumably new and unplayed.

The loose wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.  There is a hype sticker on the wrap that says, “180 Gram Audiophile Quality Vinyl.  Half Speed Mastered at Mobile Fidelity.  45 RPM from the original analog master tapes.  2 Disc set.”

There is also a wraparound banner, or “obi,” that says, “Metallica – Louder – Faster – Heavier – 45 RPM Series – Metallica Like You’ve Never Heard Them Before…”

A beautiful (and great-sounding) copy of a now-rare Metallica LP and the only copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: Starting in 2008, Warner Brothers Records reissued the entire Metallica catalog as a series of high-quality “audiophile” pressings, with each title pressed on 180 gram vinyl, and cut at 45 RPM using Mobile Fidelity’s half speed mastering technology.

The resulting LPs sounded great, but were a bit expensive and didn’t stay in print very long and are all hard to find today.

Released in 1984, Ride the Lightning was the second album by Metallica.  While the album peaked at #48 on the U.S. album charts, the album has since sold more than six million copies.

Allmusic.com gave Ride the Lightning a 5 star review:

Kill ‘Em All may have revitalized heavy metal’s underground, but Ride the Lightning was even more stunning, exhibiting staggering musical growth and boldly charting new directions that would affect heavy metal for years to come. Incredibly ambitious for a one-year-later sophomore effort, Ride the Lightning finds Metallica aggressively expanding their compositional technique and range of expression. Every track tries something new, and every musical experiment succeeds mightily. … Basically, in a nutshell, Metallica sounded like they could do anything. Heavy metal hadn’t seen this kind of ambition since Judas Priest’s late-’70s classics, and Ride the Lightning effectively rewrote the rule book for a generation of thrashers. If Kill ‘Em All was the manifesto, Ride the Lightning was the revolution itself.

David Bowie – Pin Ups sealed clear vinyl 1990 U.S. Ryko LP

david bowie - pinups u.s. ryko lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed numbered clear vinyl U.S. pressing of Pin Ups by David Bowie, including 2 bonus tracks and a gatefold cover.

This copy is number 1614 of an unknown number of copies.

About this copy: This copy of Pin Ups is a 1990 pressing on the Ryko label, issued as part of their short-lived Ryko Analogue series.

All albums in the series were pressed on clear vinyl and were direct metal mastered (DMM.)

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact, with no rips, tears or holes.

A beautiful copy of a rare David Bowie LP, as this album sold poorly on vinyl when first released.

Background: In the late 1980s, the small Ryko label earned the right to release David Bowie’s back catalog on compact disc.  The discs, which were well mastered and which included bonus tracks, were well-received by the public, and this inspired Ryko to produce them on vinyl, as well.

The “Ryko Analogue” series didn’t last long, as stores weren’t interested in stocking vinyl LPs at that time, and the David Bowie albums in that short-lived series are quite rare.

Pin Ups includes 2 bonus tracks:

  • Growin’ Up (unreleased track from the album sessions
  • Point of Amsterdam (the B-side of the “Sorrow” single

Released in 1973, Pin Ups was the seventh studio album by David Bowie and was unusual in that it was an entire album of covering songs by other artists, many of them songs that were then relatively unknown in the United States.

The album reached #1 in the UK and #23 on the U.S. charts.

Allmusic.com gave Pin Ups a 3 star review:

Pin Ups was an artistic statement, of sorts, with some thought behind it, rather than just a quick album of oldies covers to buy some time, as it was often dismissed as being. In the broader context of Bowie’s career, Pin Ups was more than an anomaly — it marked the swan song for the Spiders from Mars and something of an interlude between the first and second phases of his international career; the next, beginning with Diamond Dogs, would be a break from his glam rock phase, going off in new directions. It’s not a bad bridge between the two, and it has endured across the decades.

Frank Zappa – Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch Japan LP with obi

frank zappa - Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch by Frank Zappa, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch is a 1982 pressing on the CBS/Sony label.

The cover is M- with trace corner wear.  The obi is M-.

The standard insert is VG++ with slight discoloration.  The large poster-style insert is M-.

The disc is M-, with a number of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a rare and underrated Frank Zappa LP.

Background: Released in 1982, Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch was the thirty-fifth album by Frank Zappa.

The album reached #23 on the U.S. album charts and had a Top 40 U.S. hit with, “Valley Girl.”

Allmusic.com gave Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch a 3 star review:

Released in May 1982, Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch marks Frank Zappa’s entrance into the 1980s. From this point on, his rock records would focus on single, simple rock songs (the previous year’s You Are What You Is had them organized in interconnecting suites) with occasionally more complex instrumental numbers. … Released as a single, (Valley Girl) became a novelty hit, climbing into the Top 40 in the U.S., a rare (and not necessarily sought-after) experience for Zappa. Side two presents three live tracks, two of which are difficult rock instrumentals. “Drowning Witch” may be one of his hardest pieces to perform. This album clearly lacks ambition and tends to get lost among the man’s humongous discography, but it should not be overlooked. It contains a few good songs (“No Not Now” is quite entertaining), strong guitar work from Zappa and Steve Vai, and it is not defaced by the cold 1980s sound of subsequent albums.

Simon & Garfunkel – The Graduate sealed Japan LP with obi

Offered for sale is a still sealed Japanese  copy of the soundtrack to The Graduate, featuring songs by Simon & Garfunkel, and including the original “cap” obi and a Japan-only gatefold cover.

About this copy: This copy of The Graduate is a 1973 pressing on the CBS/Sony label of an album that was originally released in 1968.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.

An absolutely gorgeous copy of a scarce Simon & Garfunkel album.

Background: Released in 1968, the soundtrack to The Graduate featured songs by Simon & Garfunkel.

The album reached #1 on the U.S. album charts.

Allmusic.com gave The Graduate a 3 star review:

The soundtrack to Mike Nichols’ The Graduate remains a key musical document of the late ’60s, although truth be told, its impact was much less artistic than commercial (and, for that matter, more negative than positive). With the exception of its centerpiece track, the elegiac and oft-quoted “Mrs. Robinson” — which only appears here as a pair of fragments — the Simon & Garfunkel songs that comprise much of the record (a series of Dave Grusin instrumentals round it out) appeared on the duo’s two preceding LPs; Nichols’ masterstroke was to transplant those songs into his film, where they not only meshed perfectly with the story’s themes of youthful rebellion and alienation (and the inner life of the central character, Dustin Hoffman’s Benjamin Braddock) but also heralded a new era in movie music centered around the appropriation of past pop hits, a marketing gimmick that grew exponentially in the years to follow. The Graduate soundtrack, then, merits the dubious honor of being the earliest and one of the most successful Hollywood repackagings of “found” pop songs, a formula essentially based around coercing fans to purchase

Ry Cooder – Jazz original Japan LP with obi

ry cooder - jazz japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of Jazz by Ry Cooder, including the original obi.

This title has long been an audiophile favorite, as it’s a very well recorded album.

About this copy: This copy of Jazz is an original 1978 Japanese pressing on the Warner Brothers label.

The cover is VG++, with trace edge and corner wear.  Obi and insert are M-.

The disc is M- and looks like it may have been played once.  Beautiful disc!

A nice copy of a great-sounding LP.

Background: Released in 1978, Jazz was the eighth solo album by Ry Cooder.  The album did not chart.  It was briefly available as a half speed mastered audiophile pressing from Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs in the mid-1980s.

Allmusic.com gave Jazz a 3 star review:

Beginning with his self-titled debut in 1970, Ry Cooder’s records seemed to be as much history lesson as they were entertainment. Not because Cooder was trying to club you over the head with this stuff; he simply gravitated to great songs, no matter what the era or genre. Released in 1978, Jazz seems to be his first conscious attempt at a concept album, in the historical sense. Here he pays homage to some of the early tunes and masters of jazz, ranging from the late 1800s through the “coon songs” of the early part of the next century, to the ragtime and “Spanish” music of Jelly Roll Morton, and the sophistication of cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. …From the informative liner notes by Ry Cooder himself to the brilliant compositions, Jazz is, at the very least, educational. But, a little time spent with this music and you’ll see why it was and continues to be relevant, as well as beloved.

A nice copy of one of Santana’s best-selling albums.

Background: Released in 1974, Santana’s Greatest Hits was the band’s first compilation album.

The album reached #14 on the UK charts and #17 in the U.S., where it has sold more than seven million copies.

The album contains the edited “single” versions of “Evil Ways,” “Persuasion,” and “Black Magic Woman.”

Allmusic.com gave Santana’s Greatest Hits a 4 1/2 star review:

This ten-song sampler presents the best of Santana, 1969-71, the period of its greatest popularity. The hits include “Black Magic Woman,” “Evil Ways,” “Everybody’s Everything,” and “Oye Como Va.” But note that this is a bare minimum of prime Santana. Not only does the sampler choose from only Santana’s first three albums, but it leaves out such seminal numbers as “Nobody to Depend On” and “Soul Sacrifice.” Those looking for a more extensive overview should consider Viva Santana!
