Heart – Heart Japan LP with obi

heart - heart japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Heart by Heart, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Heart is a 1985 pressing on the Capitol label.

Technically, this is a second issue, as the first issue had a blue obi.  This LP likely dates from late 1985 or perhaps early 1986.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M- on side one, with no signs of play.  Side two is VG++, with a small inaudible mark through the first half of “All Eyes.”

A nice copy of a scarce Heart LP.

Background: Released in 1985, Heart was the eighth studio album by Heart and their only album to reach #1 on the U.S. charts, selling more than five million copies.

The album put four singles into the U.S. Top 10: “What About Love” (#10), “Never” (#4), “These Dreams” (#1), and “Nothin’ at All” (#10.)

Allmusic.com gave Heart a 4 1/2 star review:

Heart was pretty much considered washed up when they released Heart in 1985. They learned a few important things while they had taken a short sabbatical — they knew that hooks were important and they knew they could play up their looks for MTV. So, they delivered both with Heart, giving their audience anthemic hooks and tightly corseted bosoms, leading to the most popular album they ever had. … There’s still a lot of filler on this record, but the best moments are among the best mainstream AOR of its era.

Cream – Wheels of Fire Live at the Fillmore early Japan LP with obi

cream - wheels of fire live at the fillmore japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of the single LP Wheels of Fire – Live at the Fillmore by Cream, including the original obi.

This album was originally released in Japan as two single LPs – one of studio recordings and one of live recordings.  This single LP contains the live disc only.

About this copy: This copy of Wheels of Fire is a 1970 pressing on the Polydor label.  It’s technically a second issue, with the MP-1417 catalog number.  The first pressing, from the previous year, was SMP-1417.

The gatefold cover is VG+, with slight edge wear and a small repaired split on the bottom edge.  The obi is M-; the “hojyuhyo,” or reorder tag, is still attached.

This LP was issued without a lyric insert.

The disc is M-, with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a classic LP.

Background: Released in 1968, Wheels of Fire was the third album by Cream.

The double album, with one studio disc and one live one, reached #1 on the U.S. charts and #3 in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Wheels of Fire a 4 star review:

If Disraeli Gears was the album where Cream came into their own, its successor, Wheels of Fire, finds the trio in full fight, capturing every side of their multi-faceted personality, even hinting at the internal pressures that soon would tear the band asunder. A dense, unwieldy double album split into an LP of new studio material and an LP of live material, it’s sprawling and scattered, at once awesome in its achievement and maddening in how it falls just short of greatness…. Wheels of Fire is indeed filled with Cream’s very best work, since it also captures the fury and invention (and indulgence) of the band at its peak on the stage and in the studio, but as it tries to find a delicate balance between these three titanic egos, it doesn’t quite add up to something greater than the sum of its parts. But taken alone, those individual parts are often quite tremendous.

Ray Charles – The Great Ray Charles sealed original mono LP

ray charles - the great ray charles u.s. mono lp

Offered for sale is an early, and possibly original, still sealed U.S. mono pressing of the 1957 LP The Great Ray Charles by Ray Charles.

About this copy: This copy of The Great Ray Charles is a U.S. pressing on the Atlantic label.

As the album is sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The album is sealed in a loose wrap, as was done on early Atlantic issues.

The label variation is unknown.  This may be an original 1957 issue on the original black label, but it could also be on the later, short-lived red and purple “white fan” label that was used from 1960-1962.

This is a thick, fairly heavy pressing, so it’s likely a black label original.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.  There is a small amount of foxing in the lower left hand corner of the back cover.  Aside from that, this LP is in nearly perfect condition.

An amazing copy of a terrific LP that is usually found in terrible condition.

Background: The Great Ray Charles was the second studio album by Ray Charles, and the first to be recorded as an album (his first LP was a collection of previously-released singles.)

Unlike most of Charles’ work, this LP is entirely instrumental.  The album was released in August 1957 in mono, and sometime in 1958 in stereo.

Allmusic.com gave The Great Ray Charles a 3 star review:

This set is rather unusual, for it is strictly instrumental, allowing Ray Charles a rare opportunity to be a jazz-oriented pianist. Two selections are with a trio (bassist Oscar Pettiford joins Charles on “Black Coffee”), while the other six are with a septet taken from his big band of the period. …Ray Charles should have recorded in this setting more often in his later years.

bruce springsteen - the legend comes alive japan promo lp

Offered for sale is a copy of the Japanese sampler LP, The Live – The Legend Comes Alive by Bruce Springsteen.

This album, which contains excerpts from his Live 1975-1985 set, was issued only as a promotional item.

About this copy: This copy of The Legend Comes Alive is a 1986 pressing on the CBS/Sony label.

This is technically a second issue of the LP, as there is a sticker on the back cover correcting the running order of side two.  The track listing on side two of the actual disc is incorrect.

The cover is M-, with sticker on the back cover correcting the side two track listing.

This album was issued without an obi or a lyric insert.

The disc is M-, with one or two spindle marks and light foxing on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce Bruce Springsteen LP and the only copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: Released to Japanese radio stations in 1986, the awkwardly-titled The Live – The Legend Comes Alive was a sampler LP designed to generate sales and airplay for Springsteen’s 5 LP live album Live 1975-1985.

Doors – The Soft Parade Japan LP with obi

doors - the soft parade japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of The Soft Parade by the Doors, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of The Soft Parade is a 1978 pressing on the Elektra label of an album that was originally released in 1969.

The cover is M- with trace corner wear.  The obi and lyric insert are M-.

The disc is M- with one or two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of an album that often has a worn cover.

Background: Released in 1969, The Soft Parade was the fourth album by the Doors.

The album reached #6 on the U.s. charts.

Allmusic.com gave The Soft Parade a 3 1/2 star review:

The weakest studio album recorded with Jim Morrison in the group, partially because their experiments with brass and strings on about half the tracks weren’t entirely successful. More to the point, though, this was their weakest set of material, low lights including filler like “Do It” and “Runnin’ Blue,” a strange bluegrass-soul blend that was a small hit. On the other hand, about half the record is quite good, especially the huge hit “Touch Me” (their most successful integration of orchestration), the vicious hard rock riffs of “Wild Child,” the overlooked “Shaman’s Blues,” and the lengthy title track, a multi-part suite that was one of the band’s best attempts to mix rock with poetry.

Neil Young – This Note’s for You Japan LP with obi

neil young - this note's for you japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of This Note’s for You by Neil Young, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of This Note’s for You is a 1988 pressing on the Reprise label.  This album sold poorly, as most buyers purchased it on compact disc, rather than vinyl.

The cover is M-.  The obi and insert are M-.

The disc is M- on side one and VG+ on side two.  On side two, there is an inaudible fingernail mark through the first track.  We did that while taking pictures of the album.  It plays just fine.

A nice copy of a fairly rare Neil Young LP.

Background: Released in 1988, This Note’s for You was the sixteenth studio album by Neil Young.

The album reached #61 on the U.S. album charts.

Allmusic.com gave This Note’s for You a 3 star review:

This Note’s for You was the best of Young’s stylistic side trips because it was the only one in which the style augmented his own instead of overwhelming him. The songs were mediocre, but the playing was spirited. The album earned much better reviews than Young had gotten lately, largely because critics tend to stand in awe of the blues in whatever form it appears. And Young got further kudos due to his contretemps with MTV when the video channel first declined to program a clip for the title song because it featured parodies of popular MTV artists and commercial sponsors, then caved in and named it Best Video of the Year. Lost in all that hoopla, however, was that record buyers never came to the party. This Note’s for You was another commercial failure for Young, and it was apparent that, to lure back his audience, he would have to go back to making the kind of music his fans had liked a decade before.

Rolling Stones – Undercover Japan white label promotional LP with obi

rolling stones - undercover japan promo lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese white label promotional copy of Undercover, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Undercover is a 1983 pressing on the Rolling Stones label.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The lyric insert is M-.

The white label promo disc is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce Rolling Stones LP.

Background: Released in 1983, Undercover was the 17th British and 19th American album by the Rolling Stones.

The album reached #3 on the UK charts and #4 in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave Undercover a 3 1/2 star review:

As the Rolling Stones’ most ambitious album since Some Girls, Undercover is a weird, wild mix of hard rock, new wave pop, reggae, dub, and soul. Even with all the careening musical eclecticism, what distinguishes Undercover is its bleak, nihilistic attitude — it’s teeming with sickness, with violence, kinky sex, and loathing dripping from almost every song. “Undercover of the Night” slams with echoing guitars and rubbery basslines, as Jagger gives a feverish litany of sex, corruption, and suicide. … For some observers, that mixture was nearly too difficult to stomach, but for others, it’s a fascinating record, particularly since much of its nastiness feels as if the Stones, and Jagger and Richards in particular, are running out of patience with each other.

Black Sabbath – Technical Ecstasy Japan LP with obi

black sabbath - technical ecstasy japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Technical Ecstasy by Black Sabbath, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Technical Ecstasy is a 1978 pressing on the Vertigo “spaceship” label of an album that was first released in 1976.

The cover is VG++, with no wear, but with slight foxing.  The obi and insert are M-.

The disc is M-, with one or two spindle marks on the labels but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce Black Sabbath LP..

Background: Released in 1976, Technical Ecstasy the seventh studio album by Black Sabbath.

The album reached #31 on the UK charts and peaked at #51 in the U.S..

The album was a bit of a change for Black Sabbath, as it introduced a lot of synthesizers where one would previously have expected guitars. It also included a ballad, sung by drummer Bill Ward, that seemed a bit out of place, even if it was a catchy tune.

Technical Ecstasy had this review at Allmusic.com:

Black Sabbath was unraveling at an alarming rate around the time of their second to last album with original singer Ozzy Osbourne, 1976’s Technical Ecstasy. The band was getting further and further from their original musical path, as they began experimenting with their trademark sludge-metal sound. While it was not as off-the-mark as their final album with Osbourne, 1978’s Never Say Die, it was not on par with Sabbath’s exceptional first five releases. … The melodic “It’s Alright” turns out to be the album’s biggest surprise — it’s one of drummer Bill Ward’s few lead vocal spots with the band.

Ray Charles – The Great Hits of Ray Charles sealed original 1964 LP

ray charles - great hits u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed original U.S. copy of the 1966 LP The Great Hits of Ray Charles Recorded on 8-Track Stereo by Ray Charles.

About this copy: This copy of The Great Hits of Ray Charles is an original 1966 stereo pressing on the blue/green Atlantic label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact except for a small break in the upper left hand corner where there is a saw mark in the cover.

A nice copy of a terrific LP and a relatively scarce Ray Charles album.

Background: After Ray Charles left Atlantic for ABC Records in 1960, Atlantic issued a number of compilation albums over the next few years.

One of the more interesting ones was The Great Hits of Ray Charles Recorded on 8-Track Stereo, an album that was unusual at the time of release in that it was issued only in stereo.

The album was a compilation of tracks by Charles that Atlantic had recorded in stereo in the late 1950s but had, up until that time, issued only in mono.  Atlantic, while a small record company, had been early adopters of recording in stereo, recording in that format as early as 1952, long before stereo recordings had any commercial application.

This came in handy later in the decade when stereo records became practical, as the label had a lot of ready-to-release material available.

This LP gave listeners their first opportunity to hear “What’d I Say,” among others, in true stereo.

About this copy: This copy of Live After Death is technically a second issue, released in 1985 on the EMI label.

Unlike the first issue, which had the same catalog number, this copy did not come with the 8 page photo booklet that was included in the first issue.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The insert is VG++ with slight fading, but no tears.  The two custom inner sleeves are M-.

The two discs are M- and look like they may have been played once. There’s a faint inaudible mark on side four.

A nice copy of a rare Iron Maiden LP.

Background: Released in 1985, Live After Death was the first live album by Iron Maiden.

The album reached #2 on the UK album charts and #19 in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave Live After Death a 4 1/2 star review:

Iron Maiden’s World Slavery Tour was one of the longest and most extensive tours ever undertaken by a rock band. Lasting from August 9, 1984, to July 5, 1985, and visiting such countries as Poland, Austria, Hungry, Yugoslavia, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Scotland, England, Germany, Sweden, Canada, Japan, and the U.S., the show included a mammoth setup that replicated the intricate ancient Egyptian scenery of the Powerslave album cover. As a “thank you” to the hundreds of thousands of fans who packed arenas the world over, the double-disc live set Live After Death was issued in 1985. …Live After Death is easily one of heavy metal’s best live albums.
