A nice play copy of a terrific LP.

Background: Released in 1958, Annie Ross Sings a Song With Mulligan! was the sixth album by Annie Ross.

Allmusic.com gave Annie Ross Sings a Song With Mulligan! a 5 star review:

Singer Annie Ross’ first solo album after joining Lambert, Hendricks & Ross finds her at the peak of her powers. Ross is joined by two versions of the Gerry Mulligan Quartet with either Chet Baker or Art Farmer on trumpet, Bill Crow or Henry Grimes on bass, and drummer Dave Bailey. Annie Ross is at her best (and most appealing) on “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Your Face,” “Give Me the Simple Life,” “How About You,” and “The Lady’s in Love With You,” but all the selections are quite rewarding and her interplay with baritonist Mulligan is consistently memorable. This date plus its follow-up A Gasser are both essential.

Roxy Music – For Your Pleasure sealed 1973 U.S. white label promotional LP

roxy music - for your pleasure u.s. promo lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed white label promotional copy of For Your Pleasure, the second LP by Roxy Music.

This is the first issue on the Reprise label with a gatefold cover and includes a bio sheet that was issued only with promo copies.

About this copy: This copy of For Your Pleasure is an original 1973 pressing on the Reprise label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact except for a 2 inch (5 cm) tear at the center of the bottom edge.

There is a sticker that says, “Promotional Copy Not for Sale” attached to the cover.

There is a band biography sheet under the shrink wrap on the back cover.  These biography sheets were only issued with promotional copies of the album, so the disc should have white promotional labels as shown on the third photo.

A beautiful copy of a very rare Roxy Music LP and likely your final upgrade.

Background: Released in 1973, For Your Pleasure was the second album by Roxy Music.

The album reached #193 on the U.S. charts, and #4 on the UK charts.

Allmusic.com gave For Your Pleasure a 5 star review:

On Roxy Music’s debut, the tensions between Brian Eno and Bryan Ferry propelled their music to great, unexpected heights, and for most of the group’s second album, For Your Pleasure, the band equals, if not surpasses, those expectations. However, there are a handful of moments where those tensions become unbearable, as when Eno wants to move toward texture and Ferry wants to stay in more conventional rock territory; the nine-minute “The Bogus Man” captures such creative tensions perfectly, and it’s easy to see why Eno left the group after the album was completed. Still, those differences result in yet another extraordinary record from Roxy Music, one that demonstrates even more clearly than the debut how avant-garde ideas can flourish in a pop setting.

The poster is M- with no rips, tears, or holes.  The “image” on the poster is a picture of the band, but it’s made up of very tiny Japanese text.  We don’t know the source of the text, but we’re guessing that it’s the names of the band’s Japanese fan club members.

A nice copy of a rare LP.  We didn’t even know this was issued with a poster!

Genesis – Genesis limited edition yellow vinyl Japan LP with obi

genesis - genesis yellow vinyl japan lp

Offered for sale is a limited edition yellow vinyl Japanese pressing of Genesis by Genesis, including the original obi.

Note: While the album title on the cover and label is Genesis, this album is a reissue of the band’s first LP, From Genesis to Revelation.

About this copy: This copy of Genesis is a 1978 pressing on the London label of an album that was originally released in the UK in 1969, but which wasn’t issued in Japan until 1976.

This pressing is noteworthy for the terrific photo of Peter Gabriel in costume, and for the fact that it’s a yellow vinyl pressing, as the yellow vinyl copies were limited to 1000 units.

The cover is VG++ and very close to M-, with slight edge and corner wear.  The obi is VG++ with a couple of minor wrinkles, but no tears.

The lyric insert is M-.

The yellow vinyl disc is M- and looks like it may have been played once.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a very rare Genesis LP and only the second copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: Released in 1969, From Genesis to Revelation was the first album by Genesis.

The album was originally released only in the UK and it did not chart.  It was released in 1974 in the U.S. and in 1976 in Japan, after the band had become famous.

Allmusic.com gave From Genesis to Revelation this review:

This debut Genesis album, which has appeared under license to various labels in addition to Decca and London in different configurations, is largely of historical interest. The group was still in its formative stages, the members barely past their 18th birthdays and still working out what they wanted to sound like. Mostly they sound like the Bee Gees trying to be the Moody Blues (picture something similar to the sound of the former group’s Odessa album)….A pleasant enough piece of pop-psychedelia/art rock, but not a critically important release, except to the truly dedicated.

Madonna – Madonna first issue Japan LP with obi

madonna -madonna japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese first pressing of Madonna by Madonna, including the original obi.

First pressings are somewhat scarce; most copies of this album are later pressings that were issued after the Like a Virgin LP became a hit.

About this copy: This copy of Madonna is an original 1983 first pressing on the Sire label.

The top of the obi says, “Dance Contemporary” on it; later issues say, “MADONNA” instead.  Unlike later issues, this copy has no other Madonna albums pictured on the back of the obi.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The two inserts are M-.

The disc is M-.  There is a single spindle mark on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  A clean disc!

A nice copy of a somewhat underrated Madonna LP and one that’s surprisingly hard to find as a first pressing.

Background: Released in July, 1983, Madonna was the debut LP by the singer whose name would soon become a household word.

The album reached #6 on the UK charts and #8 in the U.S., though it has sold steadily over the years and has since sold more than ten million copies worldwide.

Allmusic.com gave Madonna a 5 star review:

Although she never left it behind, it’s been easy to overlook that Madonna began her career as a disco diva in an era that didn’t have disco divas. It was an era where disco was anathema to the mainstream pop, and she had a huge role in popularizing dance music as a popular music again, crashing through the door Michael Jackson opened with Thriller. Certainly, her undeniable charisma, chutzpah, and sex appeal had a lot to do with that — it always did, throughout her career — but she wouldn’t have broken through if the music wasn’t so good. And her eponymous debut isn’t simply good, it set the standard for dance-pop for the next 20 years. … Here, Madonna is on fire, and that’s the reason why it launched her career, launched dance-pop, and remains a terrific, nearly timeless, listen.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a a terrific and (and underrated) ELO album.

Background: Released in 1973, On the Third Day was the third album by the Electric Light Orchestra, and the first to not include founder Roy Wood as a band member.

The album reached #52 in the U.S., but did not chart in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave On the Third Day a 3 1/2 star review:

Electric Light Orchestra’s third album showed a marked advancement, with a fuller, more cohesive sound from the band as a whole and major improvements in Jeff Lynne’s singing and songwriting. This is where the band took on its familiar sound, Lynne’s voice suddenly showing an attractive expressiveness reminiscent of John Lennon in his early solo years, and also sporting a convincing white British soulful quality that was utterly lacking earlier.

John Coltrane – Ballads Japan promotional LP with obi

john coltrane - ballads japan promo lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese promotional pressing of Ballads by the John Coltrane Quartet, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Ballads is a 1976 Japanese pressing of an album that was originally released in 1963.

The gatefold cover is VG+, with slight edge and corner wear.  The obi is VG++ with slight wear at the top and bottom edges.  The “hojyuhyo,” or reorder tag, is still attached.  The insert is M-.

The disc is a promotional copy that says “sample” in Japanese above the title.  The disc is M- with a bit of foxing and a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific LP.

Background:  Originally released in 1963, Ballads was the fifth John Coltrane recording for Impulse! Records.

Allmusic.com gave Ballads a 4 star review:

…Ballads is … a perfectly fine album of Coltrane doing what he always did — exploring new avenues and modes in an inexhaustible search for personal and artistic enlightenment. With Ballads he looks into the warmer side of things, a path he would take with both Johnny Hartman (on John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman) and with Duke Ellington (on Duke Ellington and John Coltrane). Here he lays out for McCoy Tyner mostly, and the results positively shimmer at times. He’s not aggressive, and he’s not outwardly. Instead he’s introspective and at times even predictable, but that is precisely Ballads’ draw.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Works Japan 2 LP set with obi

emrson lake & palmer - works japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of the 2 LP set Works by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, including the original obi and insert.

About this copy: This copy of Works is an original 1977 pressing on the Atlantic label.

The cover is VG++ and close to M-, with slight corner and edge wear. The obi is VG++, with a tiny tear on the front.  The insert is M-.

The two discs are M- with a number of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean discs!

A nice  copy of a scarce Emerson, Lake & Palmer LP.

Background: Released in early 1977, Works was the fifth studio album by Emerson, Lake & Palmer.  The LP reached #9 on the UK charts and #12 in the U.S.

Works was a double album with the first three sides devoted to solo material, with each member getting a full side.  Side four had two tracks by the entire band.

Allmusic.com gave Works a 3 1/2 star review:

Though no one talked about it at the time of its release, this album reflected a growing split within the group. Originally, the trio’s members, tired of sublimating their musical identities within the context of ELP, each intended to do a solo album of his own. Reason prevailed, however, probably aided by the group’s awareness that the combined sales of the solo albums issued by the five members of Yes the previous year were a fraction of the sales of Yes’ most recent records. The result was this double LP; essentially three solo sides and one group side, it is the most complex and demanding of the group’s albums.
