Jimi Hendrix – Band of Gypsys Japan LP with rare puppet cover and obi

jimi hendrix - band of gypsys japan puppet cover lp

Offered for sale is a rare Japanese pressing of Band of Gypsys by Jimi Hendrix, including the original obi and featuring the rare “puppet” cover.

This is the cover that was originally used for the UK issue that was withdrawn there shortly after release.

Original Japanese issues had the same cover as the U.S. issue, but this 1980 reissue was briefly available with the “puppet” cover that depicted Hendrix, Brian Jones, Bob Dylan, and British DJ John Peel as puppets.

About this copy: This copy of Band of Gypsys is a 1977 Japanese pressing of an LP that was originally released in 1970 with a different cover.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The lyric insert is M-.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.

A nice copy of a terrific LP that’s rarely found with this cover, as most Japanese issues featured the U.S. cover photo.

Background:

Released in June, 1970, Band of Gypsys was the first live album by Jimi Hendrix. Despite mixed reviews, the album reached the top 10 in both the U.S. and the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Band of Gypsys a 4 1/2 star review:

Band of Gypsys was the only live recording authorized by Jimi Hendrix before his death. It was recorded and released in order to get Hendrix out from under a contractual obligation that had been hanging over his head for a couple years. …The music was a seamless melding of rock, funk, and R&B, and tunes like “Message to Love” and “Power to Love” showed a new lyrical direction as well. Although he could be an erratic live performer, for these shows, Hendrix was on — perhaps his finest performances. … The solo on “Machine Gun” totally rewrote the book on what a man could do with an electric guitar and is arguably the most groundbreaking and devastating guitar solo ever. …. Band of Gypsys is not only an important part of the Hendrix legacy, but one of the greatest live albums ever.

Pink Floyd (Kate Bush) Harvest Sampler 1978 promo-only U.S. LP with rare Pink Floyd track

pink floyd - harvest sampler u.s. promo lp

Offered for sale is a copy of  Harvest Sampler, a U.S. LP issued only for promotional use.

This LP includes “Point Me at the Sky” by Pink Floyd, which has not appeared on any other U.S. LP and “The Man With a Child in His Eyes” by Kate Bush.

About this copy: The cover is M-.  The disc is M- and may be unplayed.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a rare promotional sampler.

Background: Harvest Records was a relatively short-lived label, created as a spinoff of EMI in Britain with the intention of showcasing progressive rock artists.  The label wasn’t overly successful, aside from Pink Floyd, so in 1978, the label released a promo-only LP called Harvest Sampler to radio stations in the U.S. in order to inspire airplay and (hopefully) increase sales.

While the album included primarily album tracks by then-current artists on the label, the LP also included a rare track, “Point Me at the Sky,” by Pink Floyd, who at that time were no longer with the label.

“Point Me at the Sky” was the band’s fifth single in the UK, where it did not chart.  The song was not released as a single in the U.S.

Not only was “Point Me at the Sky” not released as a single in the United States, it has never been included on any commercially released album in LP form in the U.S., either.  This album is the only American vinyl release to include the song.

The version of the song on Harvest Sampler is a rechanneled stereo version created from the original mono mix.

In addition to the Pink Floyd, track, the album is also of note to Kate Bush collectors, as it includes “The Man With a Child in His Eyes” from her then-new Kick Inside album.

Tracks listing:

  • Little River Band – Changed and Different
  • Tom Robinson Band – 2-4-6-8 Motorway
  • King Harry – Fighting Talk
  • Wire – Ex-Lion Tamer
  • Pink Floyd – Point Me at the Sky
  • Be-Bop Deluxe – Panic in the World
  • Strapps – Child of the City
  • Focus – Wingless
  • Kate Bush – The Man With a Child in His Eyes

Moody Blues – Days of Future Passed 1968 Japan LP with obi and alternate cover

moody blues - days of future passed 1968 japan lp

Offered for sale is an original 1968 Japanese issue of Days of Future Passed by the Moody Blues, including the original obi, lyric insert, and an alternate cover that was used only for this release.

All subsequent Japanese pressings used a variation of the U.S./UK cover art.

About this copy: This copy of Days of Future Passed is a 1968 Japanese pressing on the Deram label.

The cover is VG+, with edge wear on the spine.  The obi is VG++, with a fold in the middle, but no tears.

The insert is M-.

The deep groove disc is M-, with a number of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of perhaps the world’s rarest Moody Blues LP and one that is very hard to find complete.

Background: Released in 1967, Days of Future Passed was the second album by the Moody Blues.

The album reached #3 on the U.S. album charts (in 1972) and #27 on the UK charts.

Allmusic.com gave Days of Future Passed a 4 1/2 star review:

This album marked the formal debut of the psychedelic-era Moody Blues; though they’d made a pair of singles featuring new (as of 1966) members Justin Hayward and John Lodge, Days of Future Passed was a lot bolder and more ambitious. What surprises first-time listeners — and delighted them at the time — is the degree to which the group shares the spotlight with the London Festival Orchestra without compromising their sound or getting lost in the lush mix of sounds. That’s mostly because they came to this album with the strongest, most cohesive body of songs in their history, having spent the previous year working up a new stage act and a new body of material (and working the bugs out of it on-stage), the best of which ended up here. … With “Tuesday Afternoon” and “Nights in White Satin” to drive sales, Days of Future Passed became one of the defining documents of the blossoming psychedelic era, and one of the most enduringly popular albums of its era.

Bill Evans Trio – Everybody Digs Bill Evans Japan LP with obi

Bill Evans Trio – Everybody Digs Bill Evans Japan LP

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Everybody Digs Bill Evans by the Bill Evans Trio, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Everybody Digs Bill Evans is a 1972 Japanese pressing on the Riverside label of an album that was originally released in 1959.

The cover is M- with a couple of tiny corner dents.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M- with slight foxing on the labels.  It’s a clean disc that has seen little play.

A nice copy of a fairly scarce Bill Evans LP.

Background: Released in 1959, Everybody Digs Bill Evans was the second album by Bill Evans.

Allmusic.com gave Everybody Digs Bill Evans a 4 star review:

Everybody Digs Bill Evans was a landmark recording for the young pianist and sported a unique album cover, featuring written-out endorsements from Miles Davis, George Shearing, Ahmad Jamal, and Cannonball Adderley. At a time approximate to when Evans was performing with the famous Kind of Blue band of Davis, Adderley, and John Coltrane, and actually departing the band, Evans continued to play the trio music he was ultimately best known for. With the unmatched pair of former Miles Davis drummer Philly Joe Jones and bassist Sam Jones (no relation), Evans was emerging not only as an ultra-sensitive player, but as an interpreter of standards second to none. …Though not his very best effort overall, Evans garnered great attention, and rightfully so, from this important album of 1958.

Bee Gees – Odessa 1975 Japan 2 LP set with obi and felt cover

Bee Gees - Odessa Japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of the double album Odessa by the Bee Gees, including the original felt cover and original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Odessa is a 1975 Japanese pressing on the RSO label of an album that was originally released in 1969.

The cover is M-.  The obi is VG++ with slight fading at the top edge and a bit of foxing on the back.  The insert is M-.

The discs are M- on sides one and three; sides two and four are VG+ with a couple of light scuffs, but no significant marks.  The records appear to have only been played a couple of times.

A nice copy of a scarce (and pretty good) Bee Gees LP.

Background: Odessa was, and remains, the Bee Gees’ most ambitious work, a heavily-orchestrated double album that was originally planned as a concept album around the disappearance of a ship.

The album was lavishly packaged in a felt-covered cover, which was unusually prone to wear.  When reissued in the mid-1970s amid the Bee Gees’ disco-flavored revival, Odessa was repackaged as a single LP with a simple printed cover.

Allmusic gave Odessa a 4 1/2 star review:

The group members may disagree for personal reasons, but Odessa is easily the best and most enduring of the Bee Gees’ albums of the 1960s. It was also their most improbable success, owing to the conflicts behind its making. The project started out as a concept album to be called “Masterpeace” and then “The American Opera,” but musical differences between Barry and Robin Gibb that would split the trio in two also forced the abandonment of the underlying concept. Instead, it became a double LP — largely at the behest of their manager and the record labels; oddly enough, given that the group didn’t plan on doing something that ambitious, Odessa is one of perhaps three double albums of the entire decade (the others being Blonde on Blonde and The Beatles) that don’t seem stretched, and it also served as the group’s most densely orchestrated album. …

The myriad sounds and textures made Odessa the most complex and challenging album in the group’s history, and if one accepts the notion of the Bee Gees as successors to the Beatles, then Odessa was arguably their Sgt. Pepper’s. The album was originally packaged in a red felt cover with gold lettering on front and back and an elaborate background painting for the gatefold interior, which made it a conversation piece.

Neil Young – Harvest original Japan LP with obi

neil young - harvest japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of Harvest by Neil Young, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Harvest is a 1972 Japanese pressing on the Reprise label.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag,) is still attached.

The English insert is M-.  The Japanese insert is M-.  The paper inner sleeve is M-.

The disc is M- with a couple of spindle marks and slight foxing on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce Neil Young LP that is hard to find as a first pressing.

Background: Released in 1971, Harvest was the fourth solo album by Neil Young.

The album reached #1 on both the U.S. and UK album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Harvest a 4 1/2 star review:

Neil Young’s most popular album, Harvest benefited from the delay in its release (it took 18 months to complete due to Young’s back injury), which whetted his audience’s appetite, the disintegration of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (Young’s three erstwhile partners sang on the album, along with Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor), and most of all, a hit single. “Heart of Gold,” released a month before Harvest, was already in the Top 40 when the LP hit the stores, and it soon topped the charts.

Modern Jazz Quartet – Live at the Lighthouse Mobile Fidelity half speed mastered LP

Modern Jazz Quartet - Live at the Lighthouse Mobile Fidelity LP

Offered for sale is a limited edition half speed mastered U.S. audiophile pressing of Live at the Lighthouse by the Modern Jazz Quartet, released by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs.

About this copy: This copy of Live at the Lighthouse is a 1984 U.S. pressing on the Mobile Fidelity label of an album that was originally released in 1967.  While the album is technically a U.S. release, the disc was pressed by JVC in Japan using their proprietary “Supervinyl” compound.

The cover is VG++ with slight edge wear.  The posterboard insert is M-.

The disc is M- with a few spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a pretty good album and a well-recorded disc.

Background: Released in 1967, Live at the Lighthouse was the twenty eighth album by the Modern Jazz Quartet.

Allmusic.com gave Live at the Lighthouse a 4 star review:

This fairly obscure LP by the Modern Jazz Quartet features fresh material and improvisations that are both swinging and creative. Pianist John Lewis’ “The Spiritual” and “Baseball,” along with vibraphonist Milt Jackson’s “Novamo” and “For Someone I Love,” comprise half the program, and it is Jackson’s influence that seems to be the weightier one here. Jackson and the MJQ always rose to the challenge of a crowd. There are also excellent ballad renditions of “The Shadow of Your Smile” and “What’s New.” The bluesier side of the band is what’s mostly on display here, and the MJQ plays up to its usual level. None of the classic group’s recordings should be passed by.

Every title ever issued by Mobile Fidelity is collectible in its own right; their pressings from 1978 through 1989 were pressed in Japan by JVC on their proprietary Super Vinyl, an exceptionally resilient, dead-quiet vinyl compound, with later issues pressed in the U.S. by RTI on 200 gram vinyl. These records were mastered at half speed; both the tape and the cutting lathe were run at half the normal speed, allowing the cutting head to cut a more accurate groove in the acetate. The finished product featured dead-quiet vinyl, with improved dynamics, better imaging, and tighter bass. By their very nature, all of Mobile Fidelity’s titles were limited-edition pressings, and Live at the Lighthouse was limited to an unknown quantity of numbered copies.

Nick Mason (Pink Floyd) – Nick Mason’s Fictitious Sports U.S. promo LP

Nick Mason's Fictitious Sports U.S. promo LP

Offered for sale is an original U.S. promotional copy of Nick Mason’s Fictitious Sports by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason.

About this copy: This copy of Nick Mason’s Fictitious Sports is a 1981 U.S. pressing on the Columbia label.

The cover is M- and still has the original shrink wrap.  There is a promotional stamp on the back cover.

The custom inner sleeve is M- with no splits.  The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce and rather unusual Pink Floyd-related LP.

Background: Recorded in 1979 but not released until 1981, Nick Mason’s Fictitious Sports is the only solo album by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason.

Allmusic.com gave Nick Mason’s Fictitious Sports a 3 star review:

Columbia, apparently attempting to cash in on Pink Floyd’s explosion in popularity, released this album in 1981 under Nick Mason’s name when in reality he’s simply the drummer in this incarnation of Carla Bley’s ensemble; Ms. Bley composed all the music and lyrics for this project. It’s possibly her most overtly pop-oriented album, with all eight songs featuring vocals by Soft Machine alumnus Robert Wyatt. The music, by Bley’s standards, is fairly pedestrian if occasionally catchy, though the lyrics are often wryly amusing. So we have songs about failed car motors and a skeptic’s encounter with a flying saucer, and one dedicated to unappreciative audiences titled “Boo to You Too.” …For Pink Floyd completists, this album might provide a glimpse into an alternate universe of which they were otherwise unaware, but fans of Bley’s earlier masterpieces like Escalator Over the Hill are likely to emerge somewhat disappointed.
