Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn japan lp

Offered for sale is a 1974 Japanese black vinyl pressing of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, including the original obi and lyric insert.

About this copy: This copy of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is a 1974 Japanese pressing on the Odeon label of an album that was originally released in 1967.

All copies of this pressing were issued on black vinyl.

The cover is VG++, and very close to M-, with a bit of minor wear on the corners.

The obi is VG+, with moderate foxing and some discoloration from age, but no tears.

The disc is VG+, with a couple of light marks on each side and many spindle marks on the labels.  It’s a fairly clean disc that plays well.

A nice copy of a fairly scarce Pink Floyd LP.

Background: The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, released in 1967, was the first LP from Pink Floyd and the only album by the band to predominantly feature founding member Syd Barrett.

In Japan, the album was issued on six different occasions, and each was available only for a short period of time:

  • 1967 – Green obi with Odeon catalog number OP-8229
  • 1970 – Pink “Rock Now!” obi with Odeon catalog number OP-80281 and ¥2000  price
  • 1974 – Pink “Rock Now! obi with Odeon catalog number OP-80281 and ¥2200 price
  • 1975 – White obi with EMI catalog number EMS-80317
  • 1983 – Black obi with EMI catalog number EMS-50104
  • 2016 – Green obi resembling the 1967 issue with Sony catalog number SIJP11

The 1967 and 1970 issues were available on red vinyl, though nearly all copies of the 1970 release were black.  The red version is one of the world’s rarest Pink Floyd LPs.

The Japanese pressing of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn features the UK track lineup, including “Flaming,” “Astronomy Domine,” and “Bike,” which were all removed from the LP for the U.S. release.  Unlike the UK and U.S. issues, all Japanese pressings of the album have been in stereo.

The Japanese pressing also includes an extra track, “See Emily Play,” which had previously been released as a single.

Full track list:

  • Astronomy Domine
  • Lucifer Sam
  • Matilda Mother
  • Flaming
  • Pow R. Toc. H
  • Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk
  • Interstellar Overdrive
  • The Gnome
  • Chapter 24
  • The Scarecrow
  • Bike
  • See Emily Play

Allmusic.com gave The Piper at the Gates of Dawn a 5 star review:

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn successfully captures both sides of psychedelic experimentation — the pleasures of expanding one’s mind and perception, and an underlying threat of mental disorder and even lunacy; this duality makes Piper all the more compelling in light of Barrett’s subsequent breakdown, and ranks it as one of the best psychedelic albums of all time.

Pink Floyd – More 1970 red vinyl Japan LP with obi

Pink Floyd - More 1970 red vinyl Japan LP

Offered for sale is a Japanese red vinyl pressing of More, the third album by Pink Floyd, including the original obi.

About this copy:  This copy of More is a 1970 Japanese pressing on the Odeon label of an album that was originally released in 1969.

This copy was pressed on “Everclean” red vinyl and includes a gatefold cover that was not included on the original 1969 issue.

The cover is VG+ with trace corner and edge wear and a “dent” at the mouth fo the cover.  The obi is VG+ with a few minor wrinkles, but no tears.  The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached.

This LP was issued without an insert.

The red vinyl disc is M- with a few spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a terrific record.

Background: Released in 1969, More was the third album by Pink Floyd and the first without founder Syd Barrett.

The album reached #153 on the U.S. album charts.

Allmusic.com gave More a 3 star review:

Commissioned as a soundtrack to the seldom-seen French hippie movie of the same name, More was a Pink Floyd album in its own right, reaching the Top Ten in Britain… Several of the tracks are pleasantly inconsequential, but this record does include some strong compositions, especially “Cymbaline,” “Green Is the Colour,” and “The Nile Song.” All of these developed into stronger pieces in live performances, and better, high-quality versions are available on numerous bootlegs.

You can listen to “Green is the Colour” here:

As with most albums in Japan, More was released multiple times, with multiple catalog numbers, multiple obis, and on both black and red vinyl.  The first issue was pressed on red vinyl and had a single pocket cover and a now-impossibly-hard-to-find “New Rock” obi; the second issue had a gatefold cover and was pressed on both red and black vinyl with a black obi with orange print.  Later issues were pressed on black vinyl only and had an obi that was unique to that particular reissue.

The first issue is extraordinarily rare and rarely turns up for sale.  The second issue, which came out the same year as the first one, was more successful in the Japanese market, but has become much harder to find in recent years, especially in good condition.

About this copy: This copy of Court and Spark is a 1980 pressing on the Nautilus Recordings label.

The cover is M-, with tiny dents on the corners, but no wear.  The Nautilus inner sleeve and catalog insert are M-.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific (and great-sounding) LP.

Background:  Court and Spark, the sixth solo album by Canadian singer Joni Mitchell, was her biggest-selling album ever, reaching #2 on the American albums chart with the help of two Top 20 singles – “Fee Man in Paris,” and “Help Me.”

Allmusic.com gave Court and Spark a 5 star review:

Joni Mitchell reached her commercial high point with Court and Spark, a remarkably deft fusion of folk, pop, and jazz which stands as her best-selling work to date. … Much of Court and Spark is devoted to wary love songs: both the title cut and “Help Me,” the record’s most successful single, carefully measure the risks of romance, while “People’s Parties” and “The Same Situation” are fraught with worry and self-doubt (standing in direct opposition to the music, which is smart, smooth, and assured from the first note to the last).

The album reached #9 on the U.S. chart.

Allmusic.com gave More Hot Rocks a 4 1/2 star review:

Hot Rocks covers most of the monster hits from the Stones’ first decade that remained in radio rotation for decades to come. More Hot Rocks goes for the somewhat smaller hits, some of the better album tracks, and a whole LP side’s worth of rarities that hadn’t yet been available in the United States when this compilation was released in 1972. The material isn’t as famous as what’s on Hot Rocks, but the music is almost as excellent.

The cover is VG, with moderate general wear, but no splits.

The album reached #3 on the UK album chart and #4 on the U.S. chart.

Allmusic.com gave Hot Rocks a 4 1/2 star review:

This two-LP set is both a lot more and a bit less than what it seems. It is seven years’ worth of mostly very high-charting — and all influential and important — songs, leaving out some singles in favor of well-known album tracks, and in the process, giving an overview not just of the Rolling Stones’ hits but of their evolving image. One hears them change from loud R&B-inspired rockers covering others’ songs (“Time Is on My Side”) into originators in their own right (“Satisfaction”); then into tastemakers and style-setters with a particularly decadent air (“Get Off of My Cloud,” “19th Nervous Breakdown”), and finally into self-actualized rebel-poets (“Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Midnight Rambler”) and Shaman-like symbols of chaos. …This is an exciting assembly of material.

About this copy: This copy of The Tony Bennett Bill Evans Album is a 1975 Japanese pressing on the Fantasy label.

The cover is VG++ with faint wear on the back side.  The obi is VG, with quite a bit of foxing, but no tears.  The insert is M-.

The white label promo disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a pretty good Jazz/Pop LP.

Background: Released in 1975, The Tony Bennett Bill Evans Album was the first collaboration between pianist Bill Evans and singer Tony Bennett.

The album did not chart.

Allmusic.com gave The Tony Bennett Bill Evans Album a 4 1/2 star review:

Having completed his relatively brief sojourn with MGM/Verve with 1973’s Listen Easy, Tony Bennett was in the midst of forming his own label, Improv Records, when he made a deal with jazz pianist Bill Evans to cut two LPs, this one for Evans’ label, Fantasy Records, with another to follow on Improv. The singer and his collaborator (“accompanist” does not adequately describe Evans’ contribution, and in any case he received co-billing) got together in a recording studio over four days in June 1975 with no one other than the producer, Helen Keane and an engineer present, and quickly recorded one of the best albums of either’s career.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.  The custom inner sleeve is M-.

The disc is M- with one or two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nearly perfect copy of a pretty good LP.

Background: Released in 1987, Solitude Standing was the second album by Suzanne Vega.

The album reached #2 on the UK charts and #11 on the U.S. chart.

Allmusic.com gave Solitude Standing a 4 1/2 star review:

The songs on Solitude Standing, Suzanne Vega’s second album, had years listed beside them on the lyric sheet, so you could see that some of them dated back to 1978. But that bold admission heralded the album’s triumph — its diversity was what made it so good. …Additionally, Vega had developed more as a singer without losing the focused intonation that had made her debut — one of many compelling elements which helped make “Luka,” a character song about domestic abuse, a fluke hit.

Beatles – Let It Be original Japan LP with obi

Beatles - Let It Be Japan LP

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of Let It Be by the Beatles, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Let It Be is a 1971 pressing on the Apple label.  This is the standard release that followed the limited box set issue.

The cover is VG+ , with slight edge and corner wear.  There is a small piece of cellophane tape in the upper left hand corner of the front cover.  The large die-cut “medallion” obi is VG+ with a couple of minor wrinkles. The smaller obi is M-.

The insert is VG+ with some discoloration from age.  The black paper inner sleeve is VG with a number of wrinkles, but no tears or splits.

The record is M- with a few spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a classic LP.

Background:  Let It Be was the final studio album by the Beatles, released in May, 1970.  As the album was technically a soundtrack album to the film of the same name, distribution of the album was handled by ABCKO, the company that belonged to Beatles manager Allen Klein, rather than Capitol Records.

When Apple Records was dissolved in 1975, Let It Be became the only Beatles studio album to go out of print, and it was actually out of print for several years in the late 1970s and occasionally turned up for sale in discount bins.

Allmusic.com gave Let It Be a 4 1/2 star review:

The only Beatles album to occasion negative, even hostile reviews, there are few other rock records as controversial as Let It Be.   … All that said, the album is on the whole underrated, even discounting the fact that a sub-standard Beatles record is better than almost any other group’s best work. …As flawed and bumpy as it is, it’s an album well worth having, as when the Beatles were in top form here, they were as good as ever.
