Remains – The Remains 1978 U.S. red vinyl LP

Remains - The Remains U.S. red vinyl LP

Offered for sale is a U.S. red vinyl pressing of The Remains, the only album by the Remains.

About this copy: This copy of The Remains is a 1978 U.S. pressing on the Spoonfed label of an album that was originally released in 1966.

The cover is VG, with moderate ring wear on the front and some wear at the lower spine.

The red vinyl disc is VG+ on side one, with a light scuff across the first four tracks.  Side two is M-.  It’s a fairly clean disc that plays well.

A nice copy of a classic LP.

Background: Released in 1966, The Remains was the only album by the band of the same name, who broke up around the time of the album’s release.

Allmusic.com gave The Remains a 4 1/2 star review:

Most 1960s garage rock obsessives collect singles rather than albums for a good reason: While plenty of snarling teenagers could come up with two decent songs at a stretch, a precious few seemed able to brainstorm a dozen tunes without reaching to the bottom of the barrel or resorting to covers of other people’s hits. But there were exceptions to this rule, among them the Sonics, the Litter, and, especially, the Remains, who never enjoyed much success on the national charts but were fabled heroes in their home town of Boston. The Remains’ 1966 album for Epic is a classic, packed with great songs from singer/guitarist Barry Tashian, bassist Vern Miller, and pianist Bill Briggs, and boasting exciting, fiery performances, and if the full firepower of their legendary live shows didn’t always come through on tape, even the album’s weakest moments made clear the Remains were tougher, smarter, and tighter than the vast majority of their competition.

Heart – Magazine sealed 1978 U.S. picture disc LP – ultra low number 31/100,000

Offered for sale is a still sealed numbered U.S. picture disc pressing of Magazine by Heart.  This copy is #31 of 100,000 copies!

Note: While the cover indicates that this is 31/100,000, the record company reportedly pressed 130,000 copies of the album, and we’ve seen copies with numbers above 100,000.

About this copy: This copy of Magazine is a 1978 U.S. pressing on the Mushroom label of an album that was originally released in 1977.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is mostly intact except for a tiny break at the lower left hand corner.  There is a bit of wear there.  There is a small bend in the lower right hand corner.  A hype sticker indicating that the release is a picture disc is attached to the wrap on the back side of the cover.

In the upper right hand corner of the back cover is a number indicating that this copy is 31/100,000.

A beautiful copy of a classic LP and one of the lowest numbered copies we’ve ever seen.

Background: Released in 1978, the picture disc edition of Heart’s Magazine was the first picture disc LP to get widespread national distribution.

The numbered series was supposed to be limited to 100,000 copies, but due to the popularity of the LP, the record company reportedly pressed 130,000 copies, along with an additional 30,000 copies in Canada, which were numbered separately.

Magazine was the second album by Heart.  The album was released in 1977 but was immediately withdrawn due to a lawsuit between the band and the record company, which had released the album in incomplete form without the band’s permission.

The album was reissued the following year with a different mix and a couple of rerecorded songs.  The album reached #17 on the U.S. charts.

Allmusic.com gave Magazine this review:

Problems with the Mushroom label delayed the release of Magazine, which eventually went platinum and peaked at number 17 on the album charts. Only the hard-rocking “Heartless” made it into the Top 40, and the album didn’t really live up to Heart’s last few efforts.

Peter, Paul & Mary – In Concert 1967 red vinyl Japan 2 LP with obi

Peter, Paul & Mary - In Concert red vinyl Japan LP

A nice copy of a well-recorded live album that has long been an audiophile favorite.

Background: Released in 1964, In Concert was the first live album by Peter, Paul & Mary.

The album reached #4 on the U.S. album chart and #20 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave In Concert a 4 star review:

This double album opens with a then-new Bob Dylan song, “The Times They Are A’ Changin’,” and closes with the best-known song ever written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hayes, “If I Had a Hammer.” That seems to sum up Peter, Paul & Mary, but In Concert offers a lot more than that. The surprises include vignettes in blues and gospel, and, most notably, the group’s humorous digressions. … The group’s rendition of “It’s Raining” achieves an exquisite mix of gossamer-textured harmonizing and thematic innocence, and their rendition of the Reverend Gary Davis’ “If I Had My Way” is a bracing re-interpretation for three interwoven voices. Finally, the version of “If I Had a Hammer” that closes this album is superior to their hit single of the same song.

About this copy: This copy of Vulture Culture is a 1984 Japanese pressing on the Arista label.

The cover is VG+ with slight corner wear.  The obi is M-; a sticker is attached at the top that says “SAMPLE” in Japanese.

The color insert is M-.

The white label promo disc is M- with one or two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce Alan Parsons LP.

Background: Released in 1985, Vulture Culture was the eighth album by the Alan Parsons Project.

The album reached #40 on the UK album chart and #46 on the U.S. chart.

Allmusic.com gave Vulture Culture this review:

Vulture Culture’s theme is another in which the fallacy of humankind is front and center. This time Parsons’ message concerns the fact that everyone lives in a parasitic society, where it’s every man for himself. Those who can’t fend for themselves simply won’t survive in a world where the kindness of the human spirit is rapidly deteriorating. …The instrumental “Hawkeye” adds life and contrast to the album at just the right time. The most appealing song, “Days Are Numbers (The Traveller)” with vocalist Chris Rainbow at the helm, combines simplicity with a timeless chorus making for a truly beautiful ballad.

About this copy: This copy of Gaudi is a 1987 pressing on the Arista label.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The  disc is M-, with one or two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific Alan Parsons LP that’s scarce as a Japanese pressing, as most original copies were sold on compact disc, rather than vinyl.

Background: Released in 1987, Gaudi was the tenth and final album by the Alan Parsons Project.

The album reached #57 on the U.S. charts and #66 on the UK charts.

Allmusic.com gave Gaudi this review:

Even though 1987’s Gaudi was inspired by architect Antonio Gaudi, its songs seem to lack the assertiveness or the instrumental endowments that usually occur within the Alan Parsons Project’s work. With a leaner, edgier sound that is best represented on “Standing on Higher Ground,” the easiness and touch that should have enveloped this album is noticeably absent. While not a complete failure, the album does reveal some passion with the last track, “Paseo de Graciad,” a finely orchestrated instrumental done exquisitely in full Parsons style.

Allmusic.com gave Peter, Paul & Mary a 4 star review:

The debut album by Peter, Paul & Mary is still one of the best albums to come out of the 1960s folk music revival. It’s a beautifully harmonized collection of the best songs that the group knew, stirring in its sensibilities and its haunting melodies as it crosses between folk, children’s songs, and even gospel… Peter, Paul & Mary, which hit the top spot on the album charts as part of a 185-week run, is the purest of the trio’s albums, laced with innocent good spirits and an optimism that remains infectious.

About this copy: This copy of The Best Of R.E.M is a 1991 UK pressing on the IRS label.

The cover is M-.  The custom inner sleeve is M- and has no splits.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce R.E.M. LP.

The album reached #7 on the UK album chart.

Allmusic.com gave The Best of R.E.M. a 4 star review:

This import collection highlights the band’s formative years on the independent IRS label. Though it lacks the alternate mixes that spurred completists to purchase 1988’s Eponymous, this set offers a more detailed picture of the band’s early days, when they sounded more pastoral than pastiche. There is nothing here that can’t be found on the original IRS albums, which are all worth purchasing, but this set is still recommended for casual listeners interested in owning just one R.E.M. disc from this creatively fertile period.

R.E.M. – Out of Time 1991 German LP

R.E.M. - Out of Time German LP

Offered for sale is an original German pressing of Out of Time by R.E.M.

About this copy: This copy of Out of Time is a 1991 German pressing on the Warner Brothers label.

The cover is M-.  The custom inner sleeve is M-.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce R.E.M. LP.

Background: Released in 1991, Out of Time was the seventh album by R.E.M.

The album reached #1 on both the U.S. and UK album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Out of Time this review:

The supporting tour for Green exhausted R.E.M., and they spent nearly a year recuperating before reconvening for Out of Time. Where previous R.E.M. records captured a stripped-down, live sound, Out of Time was lush with sonic detail, featuring string sections, keyboards, mandolins, and cameos from everyone from rapper KRS-One to the B-52’s’ Kate Pierson. The scope of R.E.M.’s ambitions is impressive, and the record sounds impeccable, its sunny array of pop and folk songs as refreshing as Michael Stipe’s decision to abandon explicitly political lyrics for the personal.

R.E.M. – New Adventures in Hi-Fi 1996 U.S. promotional 2 LP set

About this copy: This copy of New Adventures in Hi-Fi is a 1996 U.S. pressing on the Warner Brothers label.

The cover is M- with trace corner wear.  There is a promotional stamp on the back cover.

The two discs are M- and look unplayed.  Clean discs!

A nice copy of an album that’s hard to find on vinyl.

Background: Released in 1996, New Adventures in Hi-Fi was the tenth album by R.E.M. .

The album reached #1 on the U.S. album chart and #2 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave New Adventures in Hi-Fi a 4 star review:

Recorded during and immediately following R.E.M.’s disaster-prone Monster tour, New Adventures in Hi-Fi feels like it was recorded on the road. Not only are all of Michael Stipe’s lyrics on the album about moving or travel, the sound is ragged and varied, pieced together from tapes recorded at shows, soundtracks, and studios, giving it a loose, careening charm. New Adventures has the same spirit of much of R.E.M.’s IRS records, but don’t take the title of New Adventures in Hi-Fi lightly — R.E.M. tries different textures and new studio tricks. …New Adventures in Hi-Fi may run a little too long — it clocks in at 62 minutes, by far the longest album R.E.M. has ever released — yet in its multifaceted sprawl, they wound up with one of their best records of the ’90s.
