Pink Floyd – The Wall 1979 sealed Japan 2 LP set with obi and sticker

Pink Floyd - The Wall 1979 Japan 2 LP set

Offered for sale is a still sealed Japanese pressing of The Wall by Pink Floyd including the original “cap” obi and rare title sticker.

About this copy: The copy offered for sale is a 1979 pressing on the CBS/Sony label and should include both custom sleeves, the Japanese lyric insert,  and the hard to find “cap” obi that folds over the cover.

This copy also has two clear title stickers attached to the shrink wrap.

As the album is still sealed, the two discs are presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact except for a small 1 cm tear near the lower part of the mouth.  There is a small dent in the lower left-hand corner.

A beautiful copy of a classic LP that’s hard to find sealed.  This is the first sealed copy we’ve had for sale since 1990!

Background: Pink Floyd’s 1979 double album The Wall alienated a few fans and made the band a bunch of new ones.  Regardless of opinion, the album sold in the millions and is highly regarded by audiophiles as being among the best-sounding albums in the band’s catalog.

The long-out-of-print Japanese pressing is generally regarded as the best, and has been on the Absolute Sound’s recommended list for decades.

Allmusic.com gave The Wall a 4 1/2 star review:

The Wall was Roger Waters’ crowning accomplishment in Pink Floyd. It documented the rise and fall of a rock star (named Pink Floyd), based on Waters’ own experiences and the tendencies he’d observed in people around him. By then, the bassist had firm control of the group’s direction, working mostly alongside David Gilmour and bringing in producer Bob Ezrin as an outside collaborator. Drummer Nick Mason was barely involved, while keyboardist Rick Wright seemed to be completely out of the picture. Still, The Wall was a mighty, sprawling affair, featuring 26 songs with vocals: nearly as many as all previous Floyd albums combined.

Pink Floyd – Animals sealed 1977 French pink vinyl LP

pink floyd animals french pink vinyl lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed limited edition French pressing of  Animals by Pink Floyd, pressed on pink vinyl.

About this copy:  This copy of Animals is a 1977 French pressing on the Harvest/EMI label.

There were two versions of this pink vinyl LP; this copy is the version with the standard cover showing the Battersea power station.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The cover is sealed inside of a thick plastic bag that is held shut by a large sticker that says “Disque Rouge – Tirage Limite”

The bag is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.  There is a second sticker on the bag that says “Another Import Album from JEM Records.”  There is trace wear on the two left corners, as they are exposed at the edge of the bag.

A virtually perfect copy of a rare Pink Floyd LP that is almost never found still sealed.

Background: Animals was the tenth studio album by Pink Floyd. The album reached #2 in the UK and #3 on the U.S.album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Animals a 4 star review:

Of all of the classic-era Pink Floyd albums, Animals is the strangest and darkest, a record that’s hard to initially embrace yet winds up yielding as many rewards as its equally nihilistic successor, The Wall. It isn’t that Roger Waters dismisses the human race as either pigs, dogs, or sheep, it’s that he’s constructed an album whose music is as bleak and bitter as that world view. …Through it all, though, the utter blackness of Waters’ spirit holds true, and since there are no vocal hooks or melodies, everything rests on the mood, the near-nihilistic lyrics, and Gilmour’s guitar. These are the kinds of things that satisfy cultists, and it will reward their attention — there’s just no way in for casual listeners.

In the late 1970s, collectors began to show interest in colored vinyl and picture discs, and record companies began issuing limited editions of both old and new albums in those formats in order to generate additional revenue.  Most of these titles were available only for a short time, and many of the titles made in Europe were widely exported to the U.S.

During this time, there were a number of colored vinyl albums issued around the world by Pink Floyd, but the 1977 pressing of Animals from France on pink vinyl may have been the first.

For some reason, Harvest Records in France released two versions of this colored vinyl LP.  The first issue featured the regular cover depicting the pig flying over the Battersea power station and included the custom lyric sleeve.  There was also a sticker on the bag in which the album was shipped that said “Disque rouge – tirage limite” (“Pink Disk – Limited Edition”.)

The harder-to-find second version came in a cover that was all pink, with no graphics or writing whatsoever.  The inner sleeve was also all pink, again with no writing.  The pink vinyl record had the standard custom label that appeared on other versions of the album issued worldwide.

Little is known about these all pink pressings, or why they were made in addition to those with the regular covers.  We’ve seen them advertised as “promotional copies,” but there is nothing on the record or cover to suggest that they are promos, and we remember these being sold at retail when they were new.  As far as we know, the record company just decided to make two versions.

Pink Floyd – The Final Cut 1983 Japan Mastersound audiophile LP with obi

pink floyd the final cut japan mastersound lp

Offered for sale is a limited edition Japanese Mastersound pressing of The Final Cut by Pink Floyd, including the original obi.

This pressing was part of CBS/Sony’s short-lived “Mastersound” audiophile series.  Like most titles in the CBS Japan Mastersound series, this LP has been digitally remastered.

About this copy: This copy of The Final Cut is a 1983 pressing on the CBS/Sony label.

The outer cover is VG, with wear along the top edge.  The inner gatefold cover is VG++ and close to M- with slight edge and corner wear.

The obi is M-.  The lyric insert is VG+ with discoloration from age.

The two generic Mastersound catalogs are M-.

The disc is VG+ with several scuffs on each side and many spindle marks on the labels.  It’s a fairly clean disc that’s been well care for but it does play with some noise.

A nice copy of a scarce Pink Floyd LP.  This is the first copy of this version that we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: In the early 1980s, CBS Records in the U.S. and Japan created a limited edition series of high quality audiophile pressings of then-new and older LPs that were pressed on premium vinyl and sold at a premium price.  The series did not last long and most titles were quickly discontinued.

In the U.S., most of the titles were half speed mastered.  In Japan, most of the titles were digitally remastered pressings.

Released in 1983, The Final Cut was the twelfth studio album by Pink Floyd.

The album reached #1 on the UK charts and #6 in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave The Final Cut a 3 star review:

The Final Cut extends the autobiography of The Wall, concentrating on Roger Waters’ pain when his father died in World War II. Waters spins this off into a treatise on the futility of war, concentrating on the Falkland Islands, setting his blistering condemnations and scathing anger to impossibly subdued music that demands full attention. This is more like a novel than a record, requiring total concentration since shifts in dynamics, orchestration, and instrumentation are used as effect. …And it’s equally clear that Pink Floyd couldn’t have continued in this direction — Waters had no interest in a group setting anymore, as this record, which is hardly a Floyd album in many respects, illustrates. Distinctive, to be sure, but not easy to love and, depending on your view, not even that easy to admire.

A nice copy of a classic LP that is almost never found with all inserts.

Background: Released in 1975, Wish You Were Here was the ninth studio album by Pink Floyd.

The album reached #1 on the charts in the U.S. and the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Wish You Were Here a 5 star review:

Pink Floyd followed the commercial breakthrough of Dark Side of the Moon with Wish You Were Here, a loose concept album about and dedicated to their founding member Syd Barrett. The record unfolds gradually, as the jazzy textures of “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” reveal its melodic motif, and in its leisurely pace, the album shows itself to be a warmer record than its predecessor. Musically, it’s arguably even more impressive, showcasing the group’s interplay and David Gilmour’s solos in particular. And while it’s short on actual songs, the long, winding soundscapes are constantly enthralling.

Pink Floyd – The Piper at the Gates of Dawn sealed 1967 U.S. stereo LP

pink floyd the piper at the gates of dawn u.s. stereo lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. stereo pressing of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, the first album by Pink Floyd.

Note: While the full title appears on the back cover, the spine and label simply list the title as The Pink Floyd.

About this copy: This copy of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is a U.S.  stereo pressing on the Tower label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

Label variation is unknown, but the number “9” appears on the back cover.  This suggests that the album was pressed at Capital Records’ Jacksonville, Illinois pressing plant and the album likely has the second “striped” Tower label.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips or tears.  There are no punch holes in the cover.  There are a couple of breathe holes in the shrink wrap; this is common on 1960s albums pressed by Capitol.

A nice copy of a very rare Pink Floyd LP and the first sealed copy we’ve had for sale in many years.

Background: Released in 1967, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was the first album by Pink Floyd, which then included Syd Barrett on guitar and vocals.

The album reached #6 on the UK album chart and #131 on the U.S. chart.

The album was released in the U.S., UK, and Canada in both stereo and mono in late 1967.  The U.S. version, issued by Tower Records, went out of print in 1970 when Capitol Records shut down their Tower Records subsidiary label.  The album has not been reissued on vinyl in the U.S. since the original release.

The UK album had 11 tracks, but the U.S. version deleted three of them (“Astronomy Domine,” “Flaming,” and “Bike”) and added “See Emily Play,” which had been recently issued as a single.  The track appears in rechanneled stereo on this LP.

UK version has these eleven tracks:

  • Astronomy Domine
  • Lucifer Sam
  • Matilda Mother
  • Flaming
  • Pow R. Toc H.
  • Take Up They Stethoscope and Walk
  • Interstellar Overdrive
  • The Gnome
  • Chapter 24
  • The Scarecrow
  • Bike

The U.S. copy (this one) has these nine tracks:

  • See Emily Play
  • Pow R. Toc H.
  • Take Up They Stethoscope and Walk
  • Lucifer Sam
  • Matilda Mother
  • The Scarecrow
  • The Gnome
  • Chapter 24
  • Interstellar Overdrive

Allmusic.com gave The Piper at the Gates of Dawn a 5 star review:

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn successfully captures both sides of psychedelic experimentation — the pleasures of expanding one’s mind and perception, and an underlying threat of mental disorder and even lunacy; this duality makes Piper all the more compelling in light of Barrett’s subsequent breakdown, and ranks it as one of the best psychedelic albums of all time.

Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon complete 1974 Japan LP with obi

pink floyd hte dark side of the moon 1974 japan lp

Offered for sale is a complete 1974 Japanese pressing of The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, including the original obi and all inserts.

About this copy: This copy of The Dark Side of the Moon is a 1974 pressing on the EMI label of an album that was originally released in 1973.

This issue was pressed using the same stampers as the original 1973 issue, as the original UK catalog number SHVL-804 is stamped in the dead wax.

This copy includes the following inserts:

  • Blue poster of pyramids (different from U.S. issue)
  • Red poster of band members (different from U.S. issue)
  • 32 page booklet with band history, lyrics, photos and more (in both English and Japanese
  • Graphic card (printed on both sides; contains the same graphics as stickers in the U.S. issue)
  • Original obi

The cover is VG++ with very light edge and corner wear.  The obi is VG+ with moderate foxing on the back, but no tears.

The booklet is VG+ with moderate foxing on the cover.  The posters are VG++, with no rips, tears or holes, but with slight wear at the folds and slight foxing on the back.

The card is VG with several prominent creases.

The record is visually M-, with no marks on the vinyl, but there a few spindle marks and a few foxing spots on the labels.  It’s a clean disc that has had fairly little play.

A nice copy of an album that is very difficult to find complete, as the posters and card are usually missing.

Background: The Dark Side of the Moon was Pink Floyd’s eighth album and it’s the one that made them superstars. Reaching #1 in the U.S. and #2 in the UK, the album is one of the biggest selling albums in history.

While the album topped the U.S. charts for only one week, it spent 741 weeks in the U.S. top 200 – fifteen years.

Due to popularity with buyers, the album has been released in multiple limited editions around the world over the years, including several different colored vinyl pressings and as a picture disc.

In Japan, the album was issued multiple times with multiple variations, in 1973, 1974 (twice; stereo and quad), 1977, 1978 and 2016.

Allmusic.com gave The Dark Side of the Moon a rare 5 star review:

By condensing the sonic explorations of Meddle to actual songs and adding a lush, immaculate production to their trippiest instrumental sections, Pink Floyd inadvertently designed their commercial breakthrough with Dark Side of the Moon. …Pink Floyd may have better albums than Dark Side of the Moon, but no other record defines them quite as well as this one.
