A scarce half speed mastered pressing of Tom Petty's Damn the Torpedoes
Offered for sale is a scarce half speed mastered audiophile pressing of Tom Petty’s Damn the Torpedoes.
Damn the Torpedoes is the third album by Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers, released in 1979. Containing the songs “Even the Losers”, “Refugee” and “Don’t Do Me Like That”, the album reached #2 on the American charts and sold more than three million copies.
Formal audiophile pressings of Tom Petty albums are rather scarce, but Damn the Torpedoes was one of two albums released as half speed mastered pressings by MCA Records in their short-lived “Masterphile” series. This series, as far as we know, consisted of only four LPs – Damn the Torpedoes and Hard Promises by Tom Petty, Gaucho by Steely Dan, and Who’s Next by The Who.
The album was widely exported, making it available for a short time in the United States in the early 1980s.
The copy of Damn the Torpedoes offered for sale is one of those half speed mastered pressings, presumably pressed on virgin vinyl by MCA/Backstreet Records in Canada. The cover is identical to the standard release except for the sticker that reads “MCA Masterphile Series – Mastered at Half Speed” on the cover.
The cover is VG+, with a bit of wear at the edges and corners. The record is M-. This is the first copy of this pressing that we’ve had in more than 20 years.
