Offered for sale is a still sealed copy of the original 1981 Mobile Fidelity pressing of Music from Big Pink by The Band.
About this copy: The copy offered for sale is still sealed and is presumed to be unplayed and perfectly mint. NOTE: This particular copy of Music from Big Pink was originally sold as a cutout. The record is packaged in loose-fitting shrinkwrap, rather than the heavy plastic bag that accompanies most Mobile Fidelity LPs. The cardboard stiffener that protects the record is still included, and there are no cutout marks, cut corners or drill holes in the cover. The only difference between this copy and most other copies is the thinner wrap.
While Mobile Fidelity has recently reissued this title, the newer pressings have a black bar across the top of the cover instead of the purple one that was used on the original 1981 issue. As the master tapes are now 30 years older, we suspect that this original pressing will likely sound better than the new ones.
Background: A classic album from the 1960’s, The Band’s debut LP Music from Big Pink is still regarded as one of the most important albums in rock history. This album was released as a half speed mastered pressing by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs in 1981.
Every title ever issued by Mobile Fidelity is collectible in its own right; their pressings from 1978 through 1989 were pressed in Japan by JVC on their proprietary Super Vinyl, an exceptionally resilient, dead-quiet vinyl compound, with later issues pressed in the U.S. by RTI on 200 gram vinyl These records were mastered at half speed; both the tape and the cutting lathe were run at half the normal speed, allowing the cutting head to cut a more accurate groove in the acetate. The finished product featured dead-quiet vinyl, with improved dynamics, better imaging, and tighter bass. By their very nature, all of Mobile Fidelity’s titles were limited-edition pressings, and Music from Big Pink was limited to an unknown quantity of copies.
