Description

Offered for sale is a still sealed  limited edition colored vinyl pressing of Aja by Steely Dan, released in Canada in 1978.

Note: This LP was pressed on both red and yellow vinyl.  As the album is still sealed, the color is unknown, though the yellow is more common than the red.  While some red vinyl copies had a round sticker on the cover that mentioned red vinyl specifically, other red vinyl copies and all of the yellow ones had a more generic sticker that simply says “Coloured Vinyl.”  This copy has the generic sticker, so the record could be either yellow or red, but it’s most likely yellow.

About this pressing: This copy of Aja is a 1978 Canadian pressing on the ABC label of an album that was originally released in 1977.

As the album is still sealed, the colored vinyl disc is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is almost completely intact except for a tiny break at the upper right hand corner.  There is a sticker attached to the cover that says, “Edition Limitee Vinyle De Couleur/Limited Edition Coloured Vinyl.”

A nearly perfect copy of a scarce Steely Dan LP and the only sealed copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: All seven of Steely Dan’s original albums that were released between 1972 and 1980 have been highly regarded by audiophiles for years, but perhaps none quite as much as 1977’s Aja.

This album, which combined the work of founders Walter Becker and Donald Fagen with studio musicians, combined rock and jazz while keeping the album radio-friendly.

AllMusic.com gave Aja 4 1/2 stars:

Steely Dan hadn’t been a real working band since Pretzel Logic, but with Aja, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen’s obsession with sonic detail and fascination with composition reached new heights. A coolly textured and immaculately produced collection of sophisticated jazz-rock, Aja has none of the overt cynicism or self-consciously challenging music that distinguished previous Steely Dan records. It’s complex music delivered with ease, and although the duo’s preoccupation with clean sound and self-consciously sophisticated arrangements would eventually lead to a dead end, Aja is a shining example of jazz-rock at its finest.

Finding clean, quiet copies of Steely Dan’s original albums is difficult, and the master tapes for those albums were reportedly either mislaid or destroyed in the mid-1980s. While there have been several attempts by audiophile labels to give Aja a proper treatment, all were produced from lower-generation tapes and many audiophiles believe that the best sounding pressing of the album is the original 1977 ABC Records issue.
