Background: Bridge Over Troubled Water, released in 1970, was the fifth and final studio album from Simon and Garfunkel. It was also their most successful, reaching #1 on the Billboard album chart as well as topping the chart in ten countries overall.
The album has sold more than 8 million copies to date, and had four hit singles: “The Boxer,” “Cecilia,” “El Condor Pasa,” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
Bridge Over Troubled Water was one of the biggest-selling albums of its decade, and it hasn’t fallen too far down on the list in years since. Apart from the gospel-flavored title track, which took some evolution to get to what it finally became, however, much of Bridge Over Troubled Water also constitutes a stepping back from the music that Simon & Garfunkel had made on Bookends — this was mostly because the creative partnership that had formed the body and the motivation for the duo’s four prior albums literally consumed itself in the making of Bridge Over Troubled Water. The overall effect was perhaps the most delicately textured album to close out the 1960s from any major rock act.
Bridge Over Troubled Water is the fourth title to be released in Mobile Fidelity’s “One-Step” process, which improves the sound of the finished record by removing a couple of steps in the process of plating and pressing stampers:
MFSL engineers begin with the original master tapes and meticulously cut a set of lacquers. These lacquers are used to create a very fragile, pristine UD1S stamper called a “convert.” Delicate “converts” are then formed into the actual record stampers, producing a final product that literally and figuratively brings you closer to the music.
By skipping the additional steps of pulling another positive and an additional negative, as done in the three-step process used in standard pressings, UD1S produces a final LP with the lowest noise floor possible today. The removal of the additional two steps of generational loss in the plating process reveals tremendous amounts of extra musical detail and dynamics, which are otherwise lost due to the standard copying process.
The exclusive nature of these very limited pressings guarantees that every UD1S pressing serves as an immaculate replica of the lacquer sourced directly from the original master tape.
Bridge Over Troubled Water was cut at 45 RPM on two discs, packaged as a box set, and limited to 7500 numbered copies. The title is out of print, as it sold out as a preorder.
