Description

Offered for sale is an early Japanese pressing of Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 by Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66, including the original obi.

The original 1967 pressing was on the London label; this is the 1968 issue on A&M.

About this copy: This copy of Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 is 1968 Japanese pressing on the A&M label.

Unlike the original issue, this copy has a gatefold cover.

The cover is VG++ and close to M-, with slight foxing on the inside of the gatefold cover  The obi is M-.

This LP was issued without an insert.

The deep groove LP is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific LP that is rarely found complete.  We prefer this pressing to the 1980s Mobile Fidelity issue.

Background: Released in 1966, Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 was the ninth album by Brazilian pianist Sergio Mendes, and the first to feature his Brasil ’66 band.

The album reached #7 on the U.S. album charts, becoming one of the biggest-selling Bossa Nova albums ever.  This well-recorded album has long been a favorite of audiophiles.

Allmusic.com gave Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 a 4 1/2 star review:

After bouncing around Philips, Atlantic, and Capitol playing Brazilian jazz or searching for an ideal blend of Brazilian and American pop, Sergio Mendes struck gold on his first try at A&M (then not much more than the home of Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass and the Baja Marimba Band). He came up with a marvelously sleek, sexy formula: dual American female voices singing in English and Portuguese over a nifty three-man bossa nova rhythm/vocal section and Mendes’ distinctly jazz-oriented piano, performing tight, infectious arrangements of carefully chosen tunes from Brazil, the U.S., and the U.K.
