Offered for sale is a rare 1977 first issue Japanese pressing of Virgin Killer by the Scorpions, complete with the infamous nude cover and the original obi.

The original 1977 issue is much rarer than the 1982 reissue.

About this copy: This copy of Virgin Killer is the rare 1977 Japanese first pressing, complete with obi and lyric insert.

The album was reissued in 1982 as the Scorpions became popular.  The more common second issue looks nearly identical, but has a different catalog number (RPL-3034).

This copy features the notorious cover that record companies in most countries declined to use and which the band has since decided probably wasn’t the best idea.  We’ve obscured it, but if you’re looking for the album, you probably already know what it looks like.

The cover is VG++ and close to M-, with trace wear on the two left-hand corners.

The obi is VG++ with one or two foxing spots on the back.  There are no tears.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed  Beautiful disc!

A nice copy of a rare Scorpions LP and the nicest copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: Virgin Killer, released in 1976, was the fourth album by the Scorpions.  The album failed to chart in most countries, though it did reach #32 on the Japanese charts.

While the album was well-received by critics, most of the attention was devoted to the original cover art, which depicted a nude girl.  Common sense prevailed, and most countries, including the U.S. and the UK, declined to use the original cover art and instead used the album’s back cover photo (a picture of the band) as the front cover.

Cover issues aside, the album did get good critical reviews, and gave Virgin Killer a 4 star review:

Recorded just before the band began cranking out their earliest hits on classic albums like Lovedrive and Animal Magnetism, Virgin Killer is the first of four studio releases that really defined the Scorpions and their urgent metallic sound that was to become highly influential. While there are no tracks recognizable to the casual fan like “Blackout” and “Another Piece of Meat,” on Virgin Killer, serious fans of the group treasure this 1977 collection.
