Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. copy of Santana’s self-titled third album (aka Santana III), released by the short-lived and obscure Melody Recordings label.

About this copy: The copy of Santana offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. pressing on the Melody Recordings label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

Tracks are the same as the regular LP on Columbia:

  • Batuka
  • No One to Depend On
  • Taboo
  • Toussaint L’Overture
  • Everybody’s Everything
  • Guajira
  • Jungle Strut
  • Everything’s Coming Our Way
  • Para Los Rumberos

The shrink wrap is tight and complete with the exception of tiny break at the lower left hand corner.  The upper right hand corner has a small bend. It’s the nicest copy of this rare record that you’re ever likely to see.

A beautiful copy of a rare Santana LP and the only copy we’ve ever seen.

Background: In the 1970s, American copyright law had a few loopholes in it and numerous companies took advantage of that to release unauthorized, or “pirate” copies of albums that had been legitimately released by major record labels.

Most of these pirate pressings were 8 track tapes, as companies who were interested in making a quick buck found duplicating tapes to be a lot easier to do than making records. Still, a few did go to the trouble of manufacturing records, most of which were sold in discount stores.

Perhaps the largest label to engage in the manufacture of pirate pressings was a company called Melody Recordings, which claimed to be based in West Caldwell, New Jersey. In the early 1970s, the label released 15 or so titles by artists including Charlie Pride, Led Zeppelin, Carole King, Santana, Paul Simon and others.

The music on these releases was lifted straight from the versions of the album released by the legitimate labels, but all but one of the Melody Recordings LP featured the same cover – a color photo of two crowns and two scepters.

The back cover claims that all royalties have been paid to the artist, but somehow, we doubt that, as this album disappeared from the shelves not long after it came out.

They’re all quite hard to find today, especially in good condition, as the covers were quite prone to wear.

Santana, also known as Santana III, was the third studio album by the band of the same name.

The album reached #1 in the U.S and #6 on the UK charts. gave Santana a 4 1/2 star review:

Santana III is an album that undeservingly stands in the shadows behind the towering legend that is the band’s second album, Abraxas. … “Everybody’s Everything” is here, as is “Guajira” and “Jungle Strut” — tunes that are still part of Santana’s live show. With acoustic guitars, gorgeous hand percussion, and Santana’s fragile lead vocal, “Everything’s Coming Our Way” is the only “feel good” track here, but it’s a fitting way to begin winding the album down with its Schon and Santana guitar breaks. The album ends with a completely transformed reading of Tito Puente’s “Para los Rumberos,” complete with horns and frantic, almost insanely fast hand drumming and cowbell playing. It’s an album that has aged extremely well due to its spare production (by Carlos and the band) and its live sound. This is essential Santana, a record that deserves to be reconsidered in light of its lasting abundance and vision.
