Offered for sale is a still sealed white label promotional copy of Roxy Music, the self-titled debut LP by Roxy Music.
This is the first issue on the Reprise label with a gatefold cover and includes a bio sheet that was issued only with promo copies.
About this copy: This copy of Roxy Music is an original 1972 pressing on the Reprise label.
As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.
The wrap is fully intact except for two small breaks at the mouth of the cover – one about 1″ and the other about 2″. We’ve secured these with tape to prevent further splitting of the shrink wrap.
There is a hype sticker that says “Including the New Hit Single Virginia Plain” and which also lists the songs on the album.
There is a band biography sheet under the shrink wrap on the back cover. These biography sheets were only issued with promotional copies of the album, so the disc should have white promotional labels as shown on the third photo.
A beautiful copy of a very rare Roxy Music LP and likely your final upgrade.
Background: First released in 1972, Roxy Music was the debut LP by the band of the same name and one of only two albums by the group issued while Brian Eno was a member.
The album reached #10 on the UK album charts but did not chart in the U.S.
The U.S. release included “Virginia Plain,” which had been a non-LP single in the UK. The first U.S. release was on the Reprise label and featured a gatefold cover, which was dropped when the album’s distribution changed to Atco in 1976.
Falling halfway between musical primitivism and art rock ambition, Roxy Music’s eponymous debut remains a startling redefinition of rock’s boundaries. Simultaneously embracing kitschy glamour and avant-pop, Roxy Music shimmers with seductive style and pulsates with disturbing synthetic textures. Although no musician demonstrates much technical skill at this point, they are driven by boundless imagination — Brian Eno’s synthesized “treatments” exploit electronic instruments as electronics, instead of trying to shoehorn them into conventional acoustic patterns…. That was the trick that elevated Roxy Music from an art school project to the most adventurous rock band of the early ’70s.
